-- MULTIMEDIA 2005 VIDEO PROGRAM --
Call for Video Demonstrations
We invite you to make a video for ACM Multimedia 2005. This forum is
an ideal way to demonstrate your tool, system, application or brave
new idea without having to bring the equipment for a "live" demo. Even
if you have never made a video before, we encourage you to consider
this opportunity for Video Submissions at ACM Multimedia 2005.
Video Submissions Category
There are three categories of video submissions:
+ Video demonstrations (8 minutes) - gives a self-explanatory demo of
a tool, system, or application. In addition we would like to
encourage media artists to submit work that exemplifies new
trends in video art or describes an interactive multimedia art
application.
+ Video visions (8 minutes) - describes a new brave idea of
multimedia technology.
+ Video figures (3 minutes) - accompanies a regular or short
paper submission and serves as an illustration.
Accepted video demonstrations and video visions are presented during
the video demonstration session, whereas video figures are presented
together with the paper during the allocated session.
Videos will be published on a dedicated web site at the SIGMM website
(see http://www.sigmm.org/apache/video2004/ - for previous years).
The best video demonstration and video vision will get a special podium.

-- Letter from Larry Rowe --
An Open Letter to the SIGMM Community:
I am writing this message to ask for your help with the new ACM
Transactions on Multimedia Computing, Communications, and Applications
(TOMCCAP). Many of you know that the community was unhappy that the
Springer-Verlag MMS Journal was not included in the ACM Digital
Library and that it did not incorporate networking and applications
specifically in it's topic area. As a result, a recommendation was
made at the SIGMM Retreat at Multimedia 2003 that we create our own
journal to be published by ACM.
Professor Nicolas Georganas generously agreed to undertake the task of
creating the journal, which just published its first issue - see
http://www.acm.org/tomccap/ The transactions will be published four
times per year.
We need your support to make this an outstanding publication. Please
consider submitting papers and agreeing to review papers sent to you
by members of the editorial board. At the very least, I think 20%-30%
of the papers published in our annual conference should appear in the
transactions. The ACM rules on prior publication require that the
journal paper be at least 25% different than the prior publication.
We all know that the limitation on pages imposed by the conference
proceedings constrains our ability to explain all of the algorithms,
experiments, and nuances in a research project. Consequently, it
should be easy to modify a conference publication for the
transactions.
Another way you could support the transactions would be to consider
editing a special issue on an important topic. I suspect each of the
workshops at the Multimedia Conference could identify and shepard 3-4
important papers that reflect the important ideas in the area. Having
been a guest editor, I know this is a lot of work. But, please
consider doing it as the contribution you will be making is both
valuable and, dare I say, good for your career.
To submit a paper or investigate other issues related to the
transactions, just go to the TOMCCAP website listed above.
Best wishes,
Larry Rowe
