THE THEME ---------------- The naturally replenished inexhaustible energy that exists all around us in the ambient environment is often referred as renewable energy. Though this type of energy can be present in any form, it can only be converted into electrical energy through appropriate hardware. The potential renewable energy resources include light, wind, vibration, heat, biofuel, biomass, and tides. It is envisaged that the use of renewable energy will reduce the use of primary energy in future and this trend will continue in order to reduce the emission of the greenhouse gases. The abundance of these renewable distributed energy resources (DERs) at consumer side may help to develop distributed renewable energy generation at a large scale. The DERs will likely be an integral part of the future electric grid i.e., the smart grid. A prominent feature of the smart grid is that it allows for two-way communication between the utility and its customers through information and communication technologies! (ICTs).

In this special section, we seek new and unpublished work in the domain of information and communication technologies with an industry perspective in the domain of Smart Grid systems with emphasis on the integration of renewable energy resources. More specifically, this special section will focus on recent developments in the smart grid and its integration with renewable energy resources.

- Integration of renewable energy resources (RERs) with smart grid (SG) - Information and communication technologies supporting smart grid with RERs - Industry perspective on smart grid with RERs - Communication architectures and networking protocols for SG with RERs - Standardization activities for SG with RERs - Security and privacy issues for SG with RERs - Future perspective on SG with RERs - Resource management in SG with RERs - Delay sensitive and multimedia communication in SG with RERs - Optimization methods for distributed energy management systems - Electric vehicles as grid energy storage - Integration of solar energy into smart grids - Spatial load forecasting for micro-grids and virtual power plants - Energy load and prize forecasting in SG with RERs - Energy forwarding networks in SG with RERs - Energy storage and off-grid energy storage techniques - Case studies on integration of green computing with SG with RERs
