The
study of pure injective (= equationally compact)
algebras was initiated by J. Mycielski around 1970.
The motivation was the result of I. Kaplansky that
pure injective abelian groups are precisely
retracts of compact abelian groups. The subject was
quite fashionable that time and the treatment was mostly model
theoretical. Later, it turned out that pure monomorphisms
have a simple categorical description as directed colimits
of split monomorphisms. The talk will survey this
development. Then, categorical techniques will be used to find a new
