Multi-Channel Wireless Networks: Theory to Practice
Nitin H. Vaidya Professor Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Coordinated Science Laboratory University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Abstract: Wireless technologies, such as IEEE 802.11, provide for multiple non-overlapping channels. However, wireless interfaces have limited capability, allowing each host to use only a small number of channels at any time. The focus of this talk is on the use of multiple channels within a single wireless network, despite limited interface capabilities. Based on asymptotic capacity results for constrained and unconstrained channel assignment models, we argue that substantial performance benefit can be obtained by suitably allocating the channel resources across the hosts. The talk will also discuss insights on protocol design, as well as issues in practical implementation of multi-channel wireless networks.
