Interesting. The message comes from g_sync_send() in snmp/g_session.c and indicates an error return from g_async_send() in the same module. And the only way this can actually happen seems to be in a call of g_setup_address(), which basicaly does a name lookup.
Are you able to use a debugger or run strace/truss to see where it fails? (Obviously, the error reporting in the gsnmp engine can be improved. ;-)
