Dear colleagues,
Please find enclosed the CfP for a workshop that is particularily
relevant to the of E-Next WG3. This is an excellent opportinity to
present your work in the area and I am counting on you and your
Ph. D. students to receive many good submissions from Europe to make
WCW 05 a success.
Best regards

10th International Workshop on Web Caching and Content Distribution (WCW)
Support of IEEE pending
Sophia Antipolis, French Riviera, France
12 September - 14 September, 2005
http://2005.iwcw.org/
Important Dates:
March 8, 2005: Deadline for abstract submissions
March 15, 2005: Deadline for paper submissions
May 31, 2005: Acceptance notification
June 28, 2005: Camera-ready papers due
Overview:
The International Workshop on Web Caching and Content
Distribution (WCW) serves as the premiere meeting for researchers and
practitioners to exchange results and visions on all aspects of
content distribution, and delivery. Innovations in content delivery
systems continue to have strong impact in the Internet, resulting in a
surge of interest in both content delivery applications and the
web/network infrastructure that supports novel content delivery
applications. Starting from basic caching, research in content
distribution has broadened its scope to cover practically all areas
related to the intersection of content and networking, including such
areas as peer-to-peer, data grid computing, utility and edge
computing, application networking, wireless content delivery,
pervasive networking and content computing. Building on the success of
the previous WCW meetings, WCW10 plans to form a strong technical
program that covers the newest and most interesting areas relating to
content delivery services as they move through the Internet.
Call for Papers:
The workshop solicits technical papers related to Internet content
delivery, caching and replication, and content services
networking. Particular areas of interest include, but are not limited
to:
-Content delivery architectures
-P2P file sharing, storage, and content delivery
-Caching and content distribution for mobile wireless systems
-Web caching and replication (protocols and architectures)
-Edge services and dynamic content caching
-Multimedia content distribution
-Overlay networks for content delivery
-Content placement and request routing
-Empirical studies of deployed content delivery systems
-Security in content distribution systems
-Wide-area upload and content gathering
-Novel applications and paradigms for caching and content distribution

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The submission Deadline of the Special Issue of IEEE Wireless
Communications Magazine on "The Synergy of Space and Terrestrial
Communications in Next-generation Hybrid Wireless Systems" has been
extended to JANUARY, 15th, 2005
------------------ SECOND CALL ------------------------------------------
In the last few years mobile radio communications have experienced great
transformations and are still rapidly changing. The main “fuel” of this
evolutionary process is, undoubtedly, represented by the strong user
request for new conception multimedia applications (not only with a
point-to-point nature, but also broadcast and even multicast) to be
accessed in a “/ubiquitous/” fashion. An obvious solution to this
challenging issue is represented by enhancing platforms based on the
synergic inter-working of different technologies and algorithms,
including the satellite ones. By this we mean that it is important to
carry to its extremes the concept of “/hybrid/ /wireless platform”/ by
including also satellite segments not only acting as mere /bent-pipes/,
but acting as an additional /radio access segment/ to be overlapped to
the terrestrial ones.
Broadband Satellite systems for Personal Communication Systems (PCS) are
the last generation of satellites, characterized by the possibility of
providing the user with direct connections without an intermediate link
to a gateway and usually able to support broadband traffic coming from a
wide range of multimedia applications. These systems can be either GEO
or LEO satellites, use very high frequency bands, such as the Ku, Ka,
and W bands, and, in any case, are equipped with sophisticated on-board
switching and signal processing functionality, and high-capacity
inter-satellite links. The way these systems interact with the
terrestrial (preferably based on the TCP/IP protocol) networks is
manifold. Whichever the way is, the new generation of satellite
constellations is going to become an integral part of the network. In
the highlighted communication scenario it shall not be neglected that a
valid prospective alternative (or a complement) to satellites is
represented by stratospheric platforms, called High Altitude Platforms
(HAPs).
Several advantages derives from Satellite and Terrestrial system
integration, but numerous as well are the issues which remain still open
and need further investigations. In the USA, Europe, and Japan great
efforts are being taken to develop prototypes of new conception
satellite platforms, ready for future telecommunication scenarios. Many
projects currently aim at contributing to the design and deployment of
so-called “/global mobile broadband system/” (GMBS), a unique
satellite/terrestrial infrastructure ensuring nomadic users access to
multimedia services with a negotiated QoS.
Notwithstanding the many researches conducted on the topic, it still
seems that a comprehensive analysis of the impact on the offered
services deriving from the presence of HAP/Satellite platforms in hybrid
wireless communications systems is still lacking. In the guest editors’
opinion, a feasibility study on this argument is extremely important.
Furthermore, many difficulties that Satellites/HAPs are still
experiencing are more related to the lack of a clear understanding of
their “killer” utilization in a next generation communications scenario
than to technological limitations. Therefore, main objectives of the
present Special Issue consist in: analyzing the main features that
characterize the different satellite platforms currently available on
the market; highlighting their intrinsic points of strength and
limitations when they are integrated with terrestrial segments and thus
called to handle multimedia traffic with different QoS constraints and
requirements; describing how most of the emerging problems have been
successfully faced by novel technological and protocol solutions; and
making clearly emerge what is still under way of definition, what still
needs further research efforts to come to a solution, and which is the
frontier of the next few years research in the field of satellite and
terrestrial networks integration. This will, hopefully, give the readers
a complete vision of the state-of-the-art in such a strategic field as
well as the instruments to understand the role of HAPs and/or satellites
in the cited multimedia hybrid wireless scenarios, contribute to the
understanding of their actual potentiality and limitations, highlight
where there is still margin of research and development for the
academic/industrial community, and contribute to the activities of
deployment and/or to the design and implementation of effective
terrestrial-satellite platforms.
We solicit papers covering a variety of topics including, but not
limited to:
· New Technologies, Algorithms, and Protocols for Next Generation
Communications via Satellite
· HAP based systems and applications and their internetworking
with terrestrial systems
· Integrated positioning/communications platforms based on
Satellite/HAP for future applications
· Novel services in Hybrid Wireless Systems
· Evolutionary Scenarios for Hybrid Wireless Systems
· Challenges and solutions for QoS provisioning to next generation
multimedia services in Hybrid Wireless Systems
· MBMS (Multicast and Broadcast Multimedia Services) architectures
and protocols in Hybrid Wireless Systems
· Demonstrator and prototypes resulting from relevant projects and
research activities
· New conception terminals for Hybrid Wireless Systems
· The role of new band (Ka, W, etc.) payloads in future
internetworked scenarios
· Interplanetary Satellite Missions
· Standardization activities and project reports
All submissions should adhere to the style of IEEE Wireless
Communications Magazine. Guidelines for prospective authors can be found
on-line at _http://www.comsoc.org/~pci/_. Electronic submissions in

RAWNET
Workshop on Resource Allocation in Wireless Networks
http://www.rawnet.org
In conjunction with WiOpt 2005
April 3, Trentino, Italy
This workshop focuses on models and techniques for addressing resource
allocation problems in wireless networks. Resource management in wireless
environments is extremely complex due to the specific characteristics of
wireless communications, such as user mobility, interference, the
intrinsically scarce bandwidth, and the highly variable and unpredictable
propagation conditions. These features present a vast range of novel and
fundamental challenges as wireless networks evolve to support an expanding
variety of data applications. In particular, data streams have drastically
different traffic characteristics and Quality-of-Service requirements from
voice services, urging a radical overhaul of voice-centric air-interface and
resource allocation paradigms. In addition, existing congestion control
protocols for data flows like TCP were originally designed for wireline
networks, and are not well-suited to wireless links which are inherently
slow and error-prone. A further dimension of complexity stems from the
growing diversity in network architectures, as wireless LAN's and ad hoc
networks rapidly proliferate, giving rise to a wide spectrum of pricing and
routing issues.
Specific topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
* air-interface scheduling
* cross-layer design
* dimensioning, provisioning and traffic engineering
* load balancing and routing
* models and techniques for optimization of wireless networks
* performance evaluation methods for wireless networks
* power control and energy-efficient communication
* pricing and incentive schemes in ad hoc networks

IADIS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE WEB

February 23-25, 2005 -
Algarve, Portugal
(http://www.iadis.org/WBC2005)
******************************************************************
* Keynote Speakers
Professor Gunilla Bradley, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Sweden
Professor Starr Roxanne Hiltz, New Jersey Institute of Technology, USA
* Conference background and goals
The mission of this conference is to publish and integrate scientific
results and act catalytically to the fast developing culture of web
communities. The conference invites original papers, review papers,
technical reports and case studies on WWW in particular the emerging role
of so-called WWW-based Communities.
Domain: It is increasingly important for our culture to bring people
together and to promote dynamics in professional organizations, mutual
understanding, learning and harmony. Creating "virtual communities" is one
major way to do this. The Web Based Communities 2005 conference aims at
sharing and aggregating scientifically proven methods on how to organize
and moderate WWW-based communities. These communities do not limit
participants to particular locations - the international and multicultural
dimension is a most challenging one. Good WWW communities undergo a
continuous evolution and adapt to the changing world. The nature of these
communities can be corporate, scientific, social or educational. Pragmatic
questions which need to be addressed include: What software tools are the
most adequate and how to use them? How to promote your community so that
new members can find it? How to protect the members' privacy? How to
moderate discussions and how to provide information that people can use?
How to create and maintain a sense of trust and commitment among the
members? In addition, sociology, education, communication and philosophy
issues are addressed as the main disciplines reflected in building
WWW-based communities, although critical theories on societies and
post-modernism are also relevant starting points. New and imminent
technologies will be discussed.
Objectives: The Web Based Communities 2005 Conference aims at bringing
together new vital understanding of WWW communities and what new
initiatives mean. Each new perspective is potentially a catalyst for
finding new architectures. National and regional-oriented communities may
soon be relegated to a subordinate position compared to interest-oriented
communities. Multiculturalism, critical thinking, expressing aesthetic
aspects of our identity, and finding sparring partners for sharpening our
ideologies, are all processes that need the new communication
infrastructures.
The targeted audience is scientists and members and moderators of WWW
communities who feel responsible for optimizing its quality and effect.
* Format of the Conference
The conference will comprise invited talks and oral presentations. The
proceedings of the conference will be published in the form of a book. The
better papers will be candidate for the "International Journal of Web
Based Communities" (IJWBC); ISSN: 1477 - 8394 [4 issues per year]
* Types of submissions
