CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE SECON 2006
Third Annual IEEE Communications Society Conference on
Sensor, Mesh and Ad Hoc Communications and Networks
Hyatt Regency, Reston, VA, USA
September 25-28, 2006
Paper submissions due (via EDAS):
April 1, 2006 (Abstract/title registration)
April 7, 2006 (Full paper)
http://www.ieee-secon.org/2006/index.html
==========================================================================
The third annual IEEE SECON conference will provide a unique forum to
exchange ideas, techniques, and applications, discuss best practices,
raise awareness, and share experiences among researchers,
practitioners, standard developers and policy makers in the field of
sensor, ad hoc, and mesh networks and systems. IEEE SECON grew out of
IEEE INFOCOM (http://www.ieee-infocom.org) in 2004, in order to create
an event that focused on the important and exciting topics of Sensor,
Mesh and Ad Hoc Communications and Networks.
The conference will be organized to provide for collegiality and
continuity in the discussions of the various topics among participants
from the industrial, governmental and academic sectors.
Original technical papers that address the communications, networking,
applications, systems and algorithmic aspects of mesh and sensor
networks, as well as those that describe practical deployment and
implementation experiences are solicited for presentation at the
conference and publication in the conference proceedings. Papers
presenting novel contributions in such disciplines as communications,
networking protocols and architectures, algorithms, embedded systems,
middleware and information management, and novel applications are
solicited.
PAPERS:
Full papers - describing original, previously unpublished research
work, experimental efforts, practical experiences, and industrial and
commercial developments in sensor, ad hoc, and mesh communications and
networks - are solicited. Papers with a deep focus on a specific
discipline or stimulated by the synergistic interaction of diverse
disciplines are encouraged. Papers describing practical application
of technology to real-world problems are similarly encouraged. Papers
submitted should not be concurrently under review at another
conference, journal or similar venue.
Particular topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* New architectures and protocols to support communication,
localization, time synchronization, routing, data dissemination, and
other distributed services in heterogeneous, large-scale distributed,
mesh networks and sensor networks
* Novel algorithms and theories for management, supervisory control,
and monitoring of distributed ad hoc networks, and techniques for the
interpretation and use of sensor data in decision-making processes
* Modeling and performance evaluation of large-scale distributed ad
hoc and sensor networks, practical implementations and deployments,
and real-world experiences
* Theories and models on fundamental information and communication
aspects of wireless mesh and sensor networks
* Mechanisms for authenticated, secure communication and data
dissemination in sensor and mesh networks
* Algorithms and protocols to support quality of service in mesh and
sensor networks, including admission control, resource allocation and
fairness, and capacity planning
* Integration of sensors into engineered systems, including novel
techniques for on-sensor renewable power sources, mechanisms for
on-sensor self-calibration and self-testing, and efficient schemes to
maximize accuracy and minimize false alarms
* Hardware platforms incorporating multiple sensors, computation,
actuation, and wireless interfaces
* Software platforms, middleware, and tools for mesh and sensor
network applications development, deployment, and management

==============================================
Preliminary Call for Papers
WMASH 2006
The Fourth ACM International Workshop on
Wireless Mobile Applications and Services on WLAN Hotspots
Los Angeles, California, USA
September 23-29, 2006
http://wmash06.dit.unitn.it
==============================================
ACM WMASH aims to address and discuss the technical and business
challenges, ideas, views, and research results in providing public
wireless Internet services and applications for mobile users in small,
highly-populated, public spaces (wireless LANs and "hotspots").
Since the beginning of the workshop in 2003 several research and
business challenges related to public WLAN were put forward. These
challenges still need to be explored and market needs to converge while
new developments continue. The challenges are: What is the overall
network architecture and service model? How to roam through multiple
wireless access providers with a unique service contract? How to
decouple the wireless infrastructure providers from the Internet service
(and content) providers? How to locate service facilities in the
wireless access domain and how to match the available facilities with
the user needs? How to exploit location and context information? How to
provide differentiated service levels to different customers? How to
achieve seamless interoperation between WLAN-based hotspots and cellular
and other emerging wireless data networks? The last challenge,
concerning seamless interoperation, is catching the most attention these
days leading to activities in IEEE 802 and in 3GPP to move quickly
towards finding standardized solutions.
This workshop will aim at discussing these and several other challenges
and issues behind the evolution of WLANs from cable replacement to
public access. Leaders and thinkers of the field from academia and
industry will assemble to share their ideas and views. Authors are
invited to submit original technical papers or position papers,
describing current research, experimental work and visions of the
future. We are specifically interested in work dealing with network
layer and above (layers 3-7). Within the context of interest to this
workshop, a list of topics includes, but is not limited to:
. Applications and services
. New service and business models
. Public WLAN and hotspot architectures
. Community-owned WLAN infrastructures
. WLAN-based ad-hoc network service creation and management
. Metro-area hotspots using 802.11/802.16 mesh

Workshop on Multi-Layer Modelling and Design of Multi-Hop Wireless Networks
(MLMD’06),
to be held in conjunction with the 12th IEEE International Conference on
Parallel and Distributed Systems (ICPADS'2006),
July 12-15, 2006, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.
***
Sponsored by:
* The IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Parallel Processing.
* The IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Distributed
Processing. The proceedings will be published by the IEEE, and available online
on IEEE Xplore.
Workshop Scope:
This workshop will present and discuss recent results that capture the
performance and design tradeoffs when multiple layers interact, as they do, in
wireless multi-hop networks. The layered architecture view of networks has
allowed various experts to work independently to optimize the performance at
their level of abstraction. Wireless multi-hop networks have challenged the
benefits of this approach, at least from a performance perspective. The fact
that in most sensor networks the performance and purpose are tightly coupled
with a physical phenomenon increases the coupling between the top and bottom
layers of the reference network protocols stack. Furthermore, we are
witnessing an increasing interest in terms of what the design of the Internet
would be if we have the chance to do it all from scratch.
Examples of topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Joint optimization of multiple layers
- Joint modelling and performance evaluation of multiple layers
- Communication/computation methods and abstractions
- Techniques and models of medium access, aggregation, routing, and
compression that explicitly account for multiple layers
- Designs leveraging recent technologies (e.g. software radio) and their
performance
- Designs allowing co-existence in crowded shared spectrum
- Network reliability issues including quality of service
- Multi-layer security in a distributed environment

Dear Friend and Colleagues
Kindly please consider the following CFP for a special feature topic of the
Communications Magazine: deadline is April 1st, 2006
thanks
Ibrahim Habib
---------
Call for Papers: IEEE Communications Magazine
Feature Topic on "Advances in Control and Management of Connection-Oriented
Networks"
The objective of this feature topic is to report to the community recent
research and development activities in the general area of control and
management of connection-oriented networks enabled by techniques such as MPLS
label switched paths, MPLS pseudo-wire emulation, VLANs, and Generalized MPLS
(GMPLS). Dynamic control of connection oriented networks entails the
implementation of capabilities within the network for state information
management, resource allocation, decision making, and action invocation. These
capabilities are manifested through sophisticated control plane algorithms and
protocols for path computation, routing, and signaling.
Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)/Generalized MPLS (GMPLS) protocols have
attained a high level of maturity to the extent that many network equipment
vendors are now augmenting their products with MPLS and GMPLS software and
major carriers are now providing mission critical MPLS-based IP VPN services
as a cost-effective alternative to traditional point-to-point TDM private
lines. At the same time, recent advancements in the area of MPLS and GMPLS
control plane technologies have led to the proposition that it is possible to
develop a unified control plane construct that can be used for different types
of connection oriented networks, encompassing a broad range of switching
technologies.
Scope of contributions
Original contributions of a tutorial nature are solicited that cover the
topics including but not limited to:
Novel architectures for MPLS and GMPLS networks
Inter-domain routing and signaling
Routing and signaling for heterogeneous paths
Automatic discovery techniques
Call and connection management
Multi-layers protection and restoration
Transport Protocols protocols for high speed connections
Distributed versus centralized management solutions
Security of control plane messages
Pseudo-wire emulation
Resource allocation in and contention resolution in multi-layer networks
Integrated network control and management
Control interconnection models
Interfaces to dynamically controlled optical networks
Intelligent network control middleware
Multi-layer traffic engineering
Control plane design
Testbeds and field trials

- Type of the workshop (full-day or half-day)
- A description of how the workshop will contribute to the field of
Web Intelligence and/or Intelligent Agent Technology
- A short description on how the workshop will be advertised so as
to ensure a sufficiently wide range of authors and high quality
papers
After the acceptation of a workshop proposal the organizer(s) should:
- Create a "Call for papers/participation" for the workshop
- Create a Web page for the workshop, the link of which will be
published
on the Conference Web site
- Create a Board of Reviewers (Program Committee)
- Review and select papers
- Schedule the workshop activities
Those papers selected by a workshop organizer will also be reviewed by
the Workshop Co-Chairs for final acceptance.
All submitted papers will be reviewed on the basis of technical
quality, relevance, significance, and clarity.
We will provide an online paper submission and review system
to support the workshops.
III. Important Dates
- April 10, 2006: Workshop proposal submission due

We look forward to your support in making 2006 IEEE/WIC/ACM WI-IAT
workshops an exciting event.
Workshop Co-Chairs:
Cory J. Butz, University of Regina, Canada
E-mail: butz(a)cs.uregina.ca
Ngoc Thanh Nguyen, Wroclaw University of Technology, Poland
E-mail: thanh(a)pwr.wroc.pl
Yasufumi Takama, Tokyo Metropolitan University, Japan
E-mail: ytakama(a)cc.tmit.ac.jp
Note: we will not have a separate workshop registration fee this year
(i.e., only one conference registration covers everything).
For your information, the WI-IAT'06 conference will be co-located with
the IEEE International Conference on Data Mining (ICDM'06) for
providing synergism among the three research areas. It will provide
opportunities for technical collaboration beyond that of previous
conferences. The three conferences will have the joint opening,
keynote, reception, and banquet. Attendees only need to register one
conference and can attend sessions across the three conferences. We
are planning to have a joint panel and joint paper sessions that
discuss common problems in the three areas.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Fourteenth IEEE International Workshop on Quality of Service
(IWQoS 2006)
June 19-21, 2006
Yale University, New Haven, CT, USA
OVERVIEW
Since 1994, IWQoS has evolved into a premier workshop providing an
international forum for the presentation and discussion of cutting edge
research on quality of service (QoS). Building on the successes of previous
workshops, the objective of IWQoS 2006 is to bring together researchers,
developers, and practitioners working in the area to discuss timely research
results, and to identify future directions and challenges in developing
practical computer/networking systems where predictable, controlled, and robust
performance is a central requirement. The workshop's scope will broadly cover
all the important aspects of QoS research: in networking (wireline, wireless,
and sensor networks), distributed systems, operating systems, servers, and
middleware (such as grid computing and peer-to-peer systems), where relevant
technical issues include availability, reliability, security, pricing,
incentive, resource management, and performance guarantees.
Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
o QoS in grid, peer-to-peer, overlay, and wireless mesh networks
o QoS in large-scale distributed systems
o System dependability, availability, resilience, and robustness
o Security as a QoS parameter
o Rationality, incentive, microeconomics, and self-interest in
decentralized networks
o QoS in wireless, mobile, ad hoc, and sensor networks
o QoS specification, translation, and adaptation
o Measurement-based QoS estimation and verification
o QoS in intranets and VoIP systems
We also solicit papers in the following areas:
o QoS architectures and protocols
o QoS analysis and modeling
o Resource management and admission control
o QoS routing
o QoS pricing and billing
o Evaluation metrics and methodologies for QoS
o Content delivery networks with service/performance guarantees
o QoS in web systems and storage systems
o Programmability and language features supporting QoS
o QoS in multimedia systems
o Service Level Agreements and QoS
o Server-side QoS and its roles in end-to-end QoS provisioning
o QoS-aware middleware frameworks and services
o Integrated and differentiated services in wide-area networks
The workshop is a single track forum of two and a half days. It is
cross-disciplinary and well focused, with an emphasis on innovation. As a
result, a considerable amount of the meeting time will be devoted to informal
discussions. The workshop values both theoretical and practical research
contributions.
BEST STUDENT PAPER AWARD
Award will be given at the conference to the best student paper, whose first
author is a current student.
