[Tccc] CFP IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine Special Issue on DependabilityIssues with Ubiquitous Wireless Access
by Albert Banchs 08 Nov '07

CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine
Special Issue on Dependability Issues with Ubiquitous Wireless Access
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
http://www.comsoc.org/dl/pcm/cfpwireless808.htm
+++++++++++++++++++++++++
Manuscript Due: 1 December 2007
+++++++++++++++++++++++++
Recent years have witnessed a proliferation of the number of wireless
technologies available to access the Internet. While the emergence of
these new technologies can enable truly ubiquitous Internet access, it
also raises issues with the dependability of the Internet service
delivered to users. Indeed, wireless Internet access is, when compared
to traditional wired access solutions, more prone to security attacks
and less predictable in terms of the Quality of Service (QoS)
experienced by users. This poses serious challenges to the
provisioning, in this context, of a dependable Internet service that
meets the users’ requirements in terms of security, QoS, reliability
and availability, among others.
In order to meet the above requirements on dependability, new solutions
such as security and QoS mechanisms need to be designed for the
wireless access. Several issues need to be addressed in the design of
such dependable wireless solutions, including the following: (1) the
open nature of radio communications provides serious exposure to
security attacks; (2) the limited capacity and shared nature of the
wireless medium complicates the provisioning of Quality of Service; (3)
inherently unpredictable wireless channel characteristics make it hard
to guarantee availability; (4) exploitation of resources due to selfish
and malicious behavior is difficult to prevent; (5) the emergence of
new paradigms, such as opportunistic spectrum usage and self-organizing
networks, promise improvements but introduce new challenges to
dependability.
This special issue will focus on recent research results on
dependability issues with ubiquitous wireless access in the context of
wireless technologies including WLAN, cellular and broadcast systems,
ad-hoc and mesh networks, among others. Topics of interest include,
although are not limited to, the following:
* Predictable shared medium access mechanisms
* Techniques for identifying and controlling selfish users
* Security mechanisms and protocols for the wireless access
* Wireless Quality of Service provisioning
* Countering Denial-of-service attacks in wireless networks
* Metrics for measuring dependability
* Privacy-aware dependable operation for wireless networks
* Dependable opportunistic spectrum techniques
* Dependability in self-organizing networks
* Reliable and ubiquitous emergency services
* Dependable services for mobile users
Articles should be tutorial in nature and should be written in a style
comprehensible to readers outside the specialty of the article. All
submissions will be reviewed based on technical merit and relevance.
Guidelines for prospective authors can be found on-line at
http://www.comsoc.org/pubs/pcm/pub_guidelines.html. Please send PDF
(preferred), Microsoft Word, or PostScript formatted papers to Albert
Banchs (banchs(a)it.uc3m.es) no later than 1 December 2007.

[Tccc] CFP: Workshop on Smart Sensing and Situation Awareness in Sensor Networks
by WenZhan Song 08 Nov '07
by WenZhan Song 08 Nov '07
08 Nov '07
Workshop on Smart Sensing and Situation Awareness in Sensor Networks
Behrooz Shirazi and WenZhan Song, Washington State University, USA
http://conferences.theiet.org/ie08/workshop_smart_sensing.htm
The aim of this workshop is to stimulate research on smart sensing and
situation awareness related topics in wireless sensor networks (WSNs).
Sensor network can be said to be the nerve system of our engineering
network world, extracting and transmitting useful and timely
information reliably for efficient decision support and quick
corrective actions. Examples of end-to-end sensor applications
include: cargo monitoring systems in a harbor that check containers in
a WSN equipped ship for detecting dangerous chemical substances,
locating stowaways, or calculating import duties; environmental
monitoring systems, such as volcano monitoring and structure
monitoring sensor network, that provides domain scientists high
resolution views of environments; transport systems that route traffic
using real-time data monitored by sensor-enabled cars; emergency
management systems that can detect bushfires; smart home environments
that enable remote monitoring of residents, early detection of
emergency situations and enhancement of quality of life and safety.
However, different applications have different context and mission
needs, hence developing and deploying end-to-end applications for
sensor networks in a realistic business context remains highly
complex.
Unlike traditional communication networks, a sensor network is to
provide a high degree of visibility into environmental physical
processes, not to provide any-to-any communications. Consequently, it
requires an end-to-end approach that handles the WSN as a whole rather
than as a group of individual nodes. The sensor network design
therefore shall be fully context and situation-aware, and target to
maximize mission returns with given resource constraints. We seek
technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research
results. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the
following:
Environmental context and situation awareness
Resource discovery and management
Cross layering and resource awareness
(Distributed) compressed sensing and data aggregation
Data fusion, storage and management
Effective naming and device/service discovery in end-to-end WSNs
Failure resilience and fault isolation
Sensor network management
Overlay and topology management
Sensor mobility and heterogeneity, and smart sensor device drivers
Localization, time synchronization
Security and privacy
Integration with back-end systems such as web-based information
systems, process control, and enterprise software
Sensor network planning, provisioning, calibration and deployment
Deployment experience and testbeds
Experimental methodology, including measurement, simulation, and
emulation infrastructure
Analysis of real-world systems and fundamental limits

CALL FOR PAPERS
1st International Workshop on Interoperable Vehicles
(IOV 2008)
March 26, 2008
Zurich, Switzerland
In Cooperation with Internet of Things 2008
http://www.iov2008.org
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
SCOPE:
For a couple of years, some initial telematics services that inform the
driver about current road and traffic conditions are already in the
market. With new wireless communication capabilities available like
WLAN, WiMAX or UMTS, many additional services become feasible.
Therefore, one of the major automotive trends is keeping both the
vehicle and the driver seamlessly connected with their environment,
providing high-quality traffic related information, increasing active
safety and offering passengers high-bandwidth internet connectivity. In
the automotive domain, universal connectivity of vehicles in particular
enables the implicit sharing of up-to-date traffic- and road related
context information. On the one hand, the vehicles require information
from the route ahead in order to optimally support the driver. On the
other hand, the local knowledge of vehicles which is based on a variety
of on-board sensor systems can also contribute to support other (not
necessarily automotive) services.
In this regard, the workshop aims to establish a forum to bring together
research professionals in both academia and industry to address the
technical, economic, systems and application issues related to
Interoperable Vehicles.
The topics of interest include (but not limited to):
- In-vehicle knowledge management and knowledge distribution among vehicles
- Novel applications for (or based on) connected vehicles
- Multi-Channel / Hybrid Connectivity
- Network management and scalability
- Service discovery and service provisioning
- Security and Privacy
- Concurrent use of multiple applications via the available channels
- Business models for market introduction / Role out strategies
