3rd IEEE Workshop on advanced EXPerimental activities ON WIRELESS networks &
systems --- EXPONWIRELESS 2008
http://nrl.iis.sinica.edu.tw/EXPONWIRELESS08
23 June, Newport Beach, CA, USA
in conjunction with IEEE WoWMoM 2008 (http://wowmom08.ics.uci.edu/)
CALL FOR PAPERS
---------------
Wireless networks represent a challenging and ever growing research area. In
these systems
the interactions among the different network layers are very complex and
their effects on
the overall performance are not easy to accurately identify. Additionally,
many simplifying
assumptions considered in analytical studies do not hold in practise.
Experimental activities
involving the development of systems and device prototypes and the
collection and analysis
of measurements from actual networks can provide insight on the behaviour of
such systems
in realistic environments, which can be beneficial for understanding how
cross-layer
interactions impact in practise the overall performance, for deriving
realistic simulation
models, for analyzing particular phenomena and evaluating algorithms and
protocols, and for
exploring the design choices in building actual wireless networks. Such
activities are
pivotal for researchers, developers, service managers and providers, as well
as for end users
involved in the evolution of these networks.
After successful events in the last years, EXPONWIRELESS 2008 aims to again
bring
together all the aspects related to experimental activities on wireless
networks,
creating a forum where researchers, vendors, providers and users can
exchange ideas on
past experience, current requirements, and future visions, that are
important for the
development of new protocols, algorithms, devices and systems.
High quality papers discussing original and innovative experimental
activities
on wireless networks are solicited for submission. The main topics of the
workshop
are (but are not limited to):
* Algorithms for self-configuration and self-management of beyond-3G systems
* Deployment and experience with multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh
networks
* Device prototypes for wireless BANs, PANs, LANs, and MANs
* Differentiated services in wireless multimedia networks
* Energy-efficient protocols and power management algorithms
* Experiences/lessons from recent wireless testbed deployments
* Handoff and mobility management in beyond-3G systems
* Location-aware services
* Middleware platforms for wireless/mobile environments
* Mobility models of wireless/mobile networks and systems
* Positioning and tracking technologies
* Power control and channel assignment
* Prototype implementation of wireless/mobile networks and systems
* QoS for real-time voice/video in wireless networks
* Seamless internetworking and architectures for beyond 3G systems
* Systems and methods for collecting and analyzing measurements in wireless
networks
* Security and privacy issues in wireless networks
* Wireless/Mobile applications and services (e.g., vehicular networks,
underwater networks, opportunistic networks, etc.)

Camera-ready papers due : February 21, 2008
Early registration deadline : March 1, 2008
SCOPE OF THE SYMPOSIUM
Research in the area of wireless communication networks has recently
experienced an unprecedented embrace by both industry and academia.
Interest has been fueled by advances that promise exponential gains in
the error performance of networks with reduced structure, little central
oversight, and limited computational capabilities. The research area's
utility and challenging nature is demonstrated both by the contributions
from a variety of disciplines, such as information theory, discrete
mathematics, game theory and finance, as well as from the effort to
unify the above and to bring forth the inherent complexities of
multi-terminal communication and interaction.
In pace with the above challenges, the workshop will promote new results
which explore the theoretical limitations of network communications,
propose novel network coding schemes, present relaying methods and
cooperation protocols, and investigate fundamental tradeoffs between
cooperation and competition for resource allocation. The aim being to
provide the participants with an in-depth and unifying exposition to the
complex nature of analyzing, coding, cooperating and competing in
wireless networks, the workshop will seek to expose the intricacies of
multi-terminal network theory and the advanced mathematical structures
that support network communication and interactions.

REMINDER DEADLINE, JANUARY 1, 2008
Dear Colleagues,
If you are interested to contribute, please let me know and I will
send you the extended CfP.
Call for Papers symposium issue of Simulation & Gaming:
An International Journal of Theory, Practice, and Research
Theme:
Emergent characteristics of global gaming networks
Guest Editor
Jan H.G. Klabbers, jklabbers AT kmpc.nl
Following the Symposium issues “State of the Art and Science of
Simulation/Gaming”, Volume 32, Number 4, December 2001, “Simulation
and Gaming: The art & science of design”, Volume 34, Number 4,
December 2003, and “Artifact assessment versus theory testing”,
Volume 37, Number 2, June 2006, I am preparing a special issue of the
Journal Simulation & Gaming on “Emergent characteristics of global
gaming networks.”
Current gaming associations such as, ISAGA, NASAGA, SAGSET, ABSEL,
JASAG, SAGSAGA, DiGRA, SAGANET, IGDA, and SSAGSG provide a home base
for scholars and practitioners from a great variety of disciplines,
having distinct perspectives of and interests in gaming. They form
nodes in the global gaming networks. Moreover, game design is a
science, an art, and a craft, tapping off distinct abilities and
motivations. Those involved speak different languages, and as a
consequence the terminology used provokes ambiguity, confusion and
often misunderstanding among “the communities of gamers”. Thus,
covering more than forty years of research and practice, it is
worthwhile to review the field from those various perspectives, to
wrap up achievements and lessons learned, and to offer a vision of
the near future. On the one hand the study of games relates to their
design qualities, on the other hand to their context of use and their
social and cultural impact.
The aim of this special issue is to reflect on and review the gaming
landscape from the perspective of the associations mentioned above,
and to address emerging characteristics. Can we speak of a common
inheritance, a common future, and common achievements? Which goals do
these gaming associations and membership pursue? What are/were the
main issues to be addressed? What topics are being discussed at the
various discussion forums? Which challenges and puzzles need further
attention to advance the field? Authors should survey the field of
gaming and simulation, review current qualities of the different
gaming networks, covering the whole spectrum from face-to-face role-
play to computer games and simulations, and games for learning to
digital games for entertainment. They are invited to pay attention to
(terminological) questions to enhance communication among fellow
gamers. That presumes that the authors will exceed the level of
purely instrumental reasoning, prevalent in the supporting
disciplines, and offer a coherent and recognizable frame-of-reference.
My intention is to engage in a constructive dialogue with the authors
so that the final product will reflect the highest standards for work
in the gaming and simulation tradition.
Please send a one- to two-page outline containing the following items:
• A working title.
• Your name(s), address, phone, e-mail, etc.
• An abstract, with a set of objectives and an outline for the
proposed paper.
• A working plan and time schedule.
• Possibly one or two off-prints of previous papers that might be
relevant.
The outline should not exceed 750 words, including the paper’s title,
full name(s) of author(s), and should be emailed to Jan Klabbers by
January 1, 2008 at jklabbers(a)kmpc.nl preferably as a Microsoft Word
document email attachment.
Send your outline to:
