Call for Papers ARCS 2008
21st International Conference on Architecture of Computing Systems
- System Architecture and Adaptivity
February 25-28, 2008, Dresden, Germany
http://arcs08.inf.tu-dresden.de/
*Submission Deadline: September 17, 2007*
***********************************************************************
The ARCS series of conferences has over 30 years of tradition
reporting top notch results in computer architecture and operating
systems research. This year's special focus is set on adaptivity and
adaptive system architectures. We intend to cover a wide spectrum
reaching from pre-fabrication adaptation of architectural templates
to dynamic run-time adaptation of deployed systems. Like the previous
conferences in this series, it continues to be an important forum for
computer architecture research.
In 2008 ARCS will be hosted by University of Dresden, which has one of
the leading information technology schools in Europe.
The proceedings of ARCS 2008 is planned to be published by Lecture
Notes on Computer Science (LNCS).
*Paper submission*
Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers on
one of the following topics:
- Computer architecture topics such as CPU architectures, multi-cores,
memory systems, and parallel computing.
- Adaptivity and adaptive system architectures such as reconfigurable
systems in hardware and software.
- Operating Systems including but not limited to scheduling, memory
management, power management, and RTOS.
- System aspects of ubiquitous and pervasive computing such as sensor
nodes, novel input/output devices, novel computing platforms, special
purpose devices, architecture modelling, middleware, and localization
technology.
- Organic and Autonomic Computing including both theoretical and
practical results on self-organization, self-configuration,
self-optimization, self-healing, and self-protection techniques.
- Embedded systems including but not limited to architecture,
communication, design methodologies, and applications.
- Network Centric and Grid Computing issues with a focus on
middleware.
Submissions should be done through the link provided at the conference
website http://arcs08.inf.tu-dresden.de/. Papers should be submitted
in pdf or postscript format. They should be formatted according to
Springer LNCS style and not exceed 12 pages.
*Workshop and Tutorial Proposals*
Proposals for workshops and tutorials within the technical scope of
the conference are solicited. Submissions should be done through
email directly to the workshops and tutorials chair (Andreas Koch,
koch(a)esa.informatik.tu-darmstadt.de).

CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Communications Magazine June 2008
------------------
Feature Topic
------------------
Multi-Domain Optical Networks: Issues and Challenges
----------------
Background
----------------
The continuing maturation and declining costs of optical technologies has resulted in current and future optical networks having several optical domains with different granularities; each domain controlled by an independent and autonomous service provider. Now consider the emerging applications, which require high-bandwidth and interconnection with multiple applications across multiple domains. These kinds of applications necessitate the critical need for intelligent optical network control plane which is aware and can compute end-to-end paths based several domain specific and technology specific parameters. Standardized interworking across various multi-granularity network interfaces and interoperability among vendors equipment/domains are crucial to provision end-to-end services and establish cost effective network evolution path. Current optical networks are based on multiple technologies and control solutions, standard and propriety, making inter-domain and inter-carrier interworking difficult posing several new requirements, for example, the routing process needs to know the extent of each domain and the granularities on each link within the domains and should be sensitive to the costs associated in traversing through other domains; the domain specific information sharing and dissemination; performance monitoring across multiple domains; fault-localization and reporting; security; billing and accounting; control plane standardization; efficient inter-domain routing protocols such as OBGP/PNNI; SLA negotiation and guarantee across multiple domains; interoperability issues; etc. Needless to say that, by having an interoperable and standard control plane across mutli domain optical networks, carriers can benefit from cost effective selection of network elements, platforms, and multiple vendor solutions resulting in faster deployment and reduced CAPEX and OPEX. To promote research and address these challenges many leading private and government agencies have funded numerous projects across the world. Clearly,
these newer research initiatives will play a crucial prove-in role for emergent multi-domain optical networks, and their importance cannot be understated. This special issue will serve to share the collective experiences of researchers, industry professionals, practicing engineers, network operators, and equipment vendors in the area of multi-domain optical networking space.
-----------------------------

IEEE JSAC - CALL FOR PAPERS
Underwater Wireless Communications and Networks
Wireless information transmission through the ocean is one of the enabling
technologies for the development of future ocean-observation systems, whose
applications include gathering of scientific data, pollution control,
climate recording, detection of objects on the ocean floor, and transmission
of images from remote sites. Implicitly, wireless signal transmission is
crucial for control of autonomous vehicles which will serve as mobile nodes
in the future information networks of distributed underwater sensors.
Wireless communications underwater are usually established using acoustic
waves, while electro-magnetic waves can be used over short distances.
Acoustic communications are governed by three factors: limited bandwidth,
time-varying multipath propagation, and low speed of sound underwater.
Together, these factors result in a communication channel of poor quality
and high latency, thus ironically combining the worst properties of
terrestrial mobile radio and satellite channels. In addition, because
acoustic propagation is best supported at low frequencies, high-rate
underwater systems are inherently ultra-wideband. These facts necessitate
dedicated design of communication algorithms and network protocols at all
layers of the system architecture. The proposed JSAC special issue seeks
original research papers that explicitly address the unique technical
challenges encountered in underwater scenarios, including (but not limited
to) the following areas:
* Statistical channel modeling and estimation
* Underwater channel and network capacity
* Bandwidth-efficient modulation/detection methods
* Acoustic modem design and performance
* Coding for underwater channels
* Optical and RF underwater systems
* Network topology and architecture
* Resource allocation and spatial reuse
* Multiple access techniques
