The 6th International Conference on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing
(UIC-09)
- Building Smart Worlds in Real and Cyber Spaces -
http://www.itee.uq.edu.au/~uic09/
Technically Sponsored by IEEE TF on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing
Brisbane, Australia, 7 – 10 July, 2009
Co-located with ATC'09 (http://www.itee.uq.edu.au/~atc09/)
Ubiquitous sensors, devices, networks and information are paving the way
towards a smart world in which computational intelligence is distributed
throughout the physical environment to provide reliable and relevant
services to people. This ubiquitous intelligence will change the computing
landscape because it will enable new breeds of applications and systems to
be developed and the realm of computing possibilities will be significantly
extended. By enhancing everyday objects with intelligence, many tasks and
processes could be simplified, the physical spaces where people interact
like the workplaces and homes, could become more efficient, safer and more
enjoyable. Ubiquitous computing, or pervasive computing, uses these many
"smart things/u-things" to create smart environments.
A smart thing can be endowed with different levels of intelligence, and may
be context-aware, active, interactive, reactive, proactive, assistive,
adaptive, automated, sentient, perceptual, cognitive, autonomic and/or
thinking. Research on ubiquitous intelligence is an emerging research field
covering many disciplines. A series of grand challenges exist to move from
the current level of computing services to the smart world of adaptive and
intelligent services. Started in 2005, the series of UIC conferences has
been held in Taipei, Nagasaki, Three Gorges (China), Hong Kong and Oslo.
UIC-09 will include a highly selective program of technical papers,
accompanied by workshops, panel discussions and keynote speeches.
Established as a premier venue in the area of ubiquitous intelligence and
computing, UIC-09 will offer a forum for researchers to exchange ideas and
experiences in developing intelligent/smart objects, environments and
systems.
The UIC-09 topics include but are not limited to the following:
1. Ubiquitous Intelligence/Smart Systems
* Sensor, Ad Hoc & Mesh Networks
* Peer-to-peer Networks
* Mobile Social Networking
* Knowledge Representation and Ontology
* Wearable, Personal and Body Area Systems
* Middleware and Intelligent Platforms

Dear Colleagues,
(Sorry for the cross posting!)
*Mobile Networks and Applications (MONET)*
*Special Issue on Advances and Applications in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks*
* *
Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) using all kinds of wireless
technologies has recently received considerable attention. The goal of
this special issue is to explore the development of wireless vehicular
ad hoc network technologies about communication, networking, and
applications. A good communication protocol design can achieve highly
reliable, highly scalable, and high performance. In aspect of
networking, there are many challenges that how to offer quality of
service, build high performance routing, provide mobility management,
and create secure vehicular ad hoc networks. VANET safety applications
include safety warnings and collision avoidance. This is imperious to
improve the non-safety applications and reduce the occurrence of
collision. VANETs present a highly active field of research,
development, standardization and field trials. Throughout the world,
there are many national/international projects in government, industry,
and academia devoted to VANETs, for example consortia like VSC (US),
C2CCC (Europe) and InternetITS (Japan), standardization efforts like
IEEE 802.11p (WAVE) and field trials like the large-scale Vehicle
Infrastructure Integration Program (VII) in the US. The special issue
solicits high-quality theoretical as well as practical works on a broad
range of issues important to the communication, networking, and
applications for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). Topics of interest
include but are not limited to following:
- Safety and non-safety applications
- Roadside-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-vehicle communication
- Communication protocol design
- Channel modeling
- Modulation and coding
- Power control and scalability issues
- Multi-channel organization and operation
- Security issues and countermeasures
- Privacy issues
- Network management
- Routing protocol and mobility management
- Simulation frameworks & real-world testbeds

The First Workshop on
Scenarios for Network Evaluation Studies
(SCENES 2009)
http://www.scenes-workshop.org
Rome, Italy
March 6th, 2009
to be held in conjunction with
SIMUTools 2009.
CALL FOR PAPERS
For the reliable performance evaluation of wireless networks, realistic
models
and credible simulation scenarios are crucial. Recently, in the area of
wireless
networks, it has been shown that simplistic models for mobility,
traffic, and
signal propagation yield results that are too optimistic. In order to
provide
more credible models, traces from specific scenarios need to be acquired and
then realistic scenario models need to be developed and validated. We
solicit
papers on mobility, traffic, propagation, and scenario modelling for various
wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers
on trace
measurement architectures and trace characterizations of wireless
networks are
also welcome.
The main purpose of this workshop is to promote further research
interests and
activities on scenario modelling of wireless networks. It is also aimed at
increasing the synergy between academic and industrial researchers
working in
this area. We are interested in experimental, systems-related,
theoretical, and
work-in-progress papers in all aspects of wireless network scenarios.
The topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
* Classification of scenarios
* Challenges in trace acquisition
* Tools for mobility, traffic and propagation modelling
* Methods in localization and tracking to acquire accurate movement
traces
* Movement trace measurement architectures
* Characterization of movement traces
* Mobility modelling
* Validation of mobility models
* Traffic measurement, traffic characterization, traffic modelling
* Combined mobility and traffic modelling
* Characterization of signal propagation
* Propagation modelling
* Impact of mobility on radio characterization
* Impact of scenario modelling on performance
Authors are invited to submit full papers and work-in-progress papers for
presentation at the workshop. Papers (no more than 8 camera-ready pages
in ACM
conference proceedings format) should describe original, previously
unpublished
work, not currently under review by another conference, workshop, or
journal.
For detailed submission instructions, together with format files, see
the SCENES
website.

************************ 2nd CALL FOR PAPERS ************************
Future-Net 2009
International Workshop on the Network of the Future 2009
18 June 2009, Dresden, Germany
to be announced
In conjunction with the
IEEE International Conference on Communications
http://www.future-network09.org
Submission deadline: November 1st, 2008
*********************************************************************
Today's Internet architecture is stifling innovation, restricting it
mostly to the application layer. From a number of angles it appears that
we have reached a point in the impressive development cycle of the
Internet that now requires some major change. However, research and
development in these areas is still at an early stage and the space of
potential solutions is far from being explored.
The International Workshop on the Network of the Future (Future-Net 09)
is a platform for both clean-slate as well as evolutionary approaches
for a redesign of the Internet. It will uniquely bring together
approaches driven from mobile and wireless demands, network
virtualization, network self-management, content and sensor networking
and discuss these from both a technical as well as socio-economic
perspective.
Topics of Interest:
We solicit contributions that report early results addressing research
challenges in topics related to the network of the future. Particularly,
we want to identify and address issues with a high potential for
significant impacts on the way the network is functioning and being
used. The workshop welcomes submissions from both researchers and
practitioners but fresh ideas in the form of early results, position
papers and systems papers are particularly welcome.
Areas of interest include but are not limited to:
- Alternatives to established technologies such as routing
- Re-design and re-evaluation of today's architectural principles
- End-to-end virtualization of the network
- Technology to introduce vital but missing functionality
- Self-management of network services
- New media-aware transport services
- New approaches to network security
- Mechanisms to interconnect extremely heterogeneous edge networks
- Technology based on new communication paradigms
- Wide-scale Internets of Things
- Machine-to-machine networking
- Socio-economic for the future Internet
- Business models for the Internet of Things
- Business drivers for radical changes in the network
- Regulatory frameworks for a new networking layer

Call For Papers
*** EvoCOMNET 2009 ***
6th European Workshop on Nature-inspired Techniques for
Telecommunications Networks and
other Parallel and Distributed Systems
* Tubingen, Germany, April 15-17, 2009 *

-- Part of the EVOSTAR 2009 events: http://www.evostar.org --
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Many biological systems and processes are characterized by a parallel and
distributed architecture in which a large number of autonomous and
minimalist
units synergistically generate global-level behaviors through local
interactions, communications, and the adoption of relatively simple
stochastic
action policies. The resulting global-level behaviors usually show a
number of
properties essential for success in natural environments such as:
adaptivity to
environmental variations, robustness to internal changes and failures, and
effectiveness and scalability of performance.
Because of all these architectural and performance properties, the
observation
and reverse-engineering of successful processes in organic, inorganic, and
animal systems in nature, has drawn in recent years the attention of many
researchers and engineers working in the fields of parallel and distributed
systems, and, more in particular, in telecommunications networks. In these
domains, nature has provided basic inspiration for the definition of a
number
of novel algorithms and computational frameworks able to deal
effectively with
the challenges of current networked systems, which show a growing structural
and computational complexity and are made of a large number of highly
dynamic
and heterogeneous components.
The aim of the workshop is to provide a forum to present cutting edge
research
on nature-inspired approaches to problems arising in the design, control,
protection, and management of network systems, and to outline new trends in
parallel nature-inspired computation for the solution of complex problems.
EvoCOMNET is part of EVOSTAR (EVO*), Europe's premier co-located
events in the field of evolutionary and nature-inspired
computing. EVO* includes the EuroGP, EvoCOP and EvoBIO
conferences and a number of workshops collectively entitled
EvoWorkshops. EVO* 2009 is the 11th edition of the event, details
and cfps can be found at: http://www.evostar.org
---------------------------
