CALL FOR PAPERS (WiPH2009)
=======================================================================
2009 International Workshop on Wireless Pervasive Healthcare (WiPH
2009), March 31, 2009, London UK
(http://www.wiph-workshop.org/)
to be held in conjunction with 3rd International Conference on
Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare 2009, April 1-3,
London UK
(http://www.pervasivehealth.org/cfp.shtml)
=======================================================================
-----------------
Aim of the workshop
-----------------
Wireless access for pervasive healthcare is an emerging
cross-disciplinary subject, focusing on the research and developments
of pervasive and ubiquitous wireless technologies in order to improve
the quality of healthcare and wellness. With the recent advances in
hardware design and wireless communications, the evolution of new
generations of embedded wireless devices, which facilitates reliable,
comprehensive, and high-standard healthcare, has attracted intensive
attention from both industries and academic institutes. Particularly,
developments in wireless infrastructure, such as body-area networks or
pervasive health-monitoring system, have proved beneficial to deliver
telemedicine services regardless of a patient's physical location.
However, there still exist many challenges to overcome before the real
marketing stage due to requirements for reliable signal propagation
characteristics, low network latency, low packet loss, robust data and
image transmission, and the great need for safe, secure, and
dependable operation. In addition, cost issue is another key concern
for worldwide utilization of wireless devices for pervasive
healthcare.
The aim of the workshop is to bring together both the industry and
academia to present and discuss the problems, challenges, directions,
and state-of-art in the fields of wireless access for pervasive
healthcare. The workshop will try to build a bridge between the
industry and academic research so that future collaborations between
two sectors can be identified. In addition, we welcome demos of
state-of-the-art products.

We apologize if you receive multiple copies.
CALL FOR PAPERS
Workshop on Cooperative and Cognitive Networks
21-24 JUNE 2009 Leipzig, Germany
In conjunction with the 5th International Wireless
Communications and Mobile Computing Conference
Workshop scope
The concept of cooperative communications for wireless networks, such as
cellular networks, sensor networks, and wireless ad hoc networks, has
recently attracted considerable attention. Different from conventional
point-to-point communications, cooperative communications and networking
allows different users or nodes in a wireless network to share resources
to create collaboration through distributed transmission/processing, in
which each user's information is sent out not only by the user, but also
by collaborating users. Cooperative communications and networking is a
new communication paradigm promising significant capacity and
multiplexing gain increase in wireless networks. It realizes a new form
of space diversity to combat the effects of severe fading that has been
termed cooperative diversity, and it is also helpful in reducing
complexity of routing problems and realizing seamless networking,
Although some initial understanding of cooperative communication schemes
has been demonstrated in recent years, many more problems related to
developing practical and effective cooperative communication systems
have emerged or remain open.
Cognitive radio has emerged as a promising technology for optimizing
utilization of radio bandwidth in the next generation wireless
communications systems and networks. This will enable us to cope with
the increasing spectrum demand for wireless services as well as create
new wireless applications and services. Recently, we have witnessed a
flurry of research in dynamic spectrum access and cognitive radio.
Development of cognitive radio technology has to deal with technical and
practical considerations as well as regulatory requirements, and
therefore, there is an increasing interest in this technology among the
researchers and the spectrum policy makers. The workshop will focus on
the research challenges associated with the design, implementation, and
application of cognitive and spectrum agile wireless networks.

CALL FOR PAPERS
SAHNS 2009
The Second International Workshop on
Specialized Ad Hoc Networks and Systems
Montreal, Canada, June 26, 2009
<http://www.cs.wmich.edu/~alfuqaha/SAHNS2009/>
http://www.cs.wmich.edu/~alfuqaha/SAHNS2009/
In conjunction with the IEEE 29th International Conference
on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS 2009)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. SCOPE
The Workshop provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia,
industry and government to present their latest research findings in
specialized ad-hoc networks and systems.
As an alternative to one-size-fits-all general solutions in the area of ad
hoc networking and systems, we want to stimulate the application-oriented
divide-and-conquer approach to ad hoc network and system research. The goal
is to provide sound and efficient specialized ad hoc networks and systems
(SAHNS), suitable for building solutions specific for well-defined classes
of applications or even individual applications.
We want to consider both specialized ad hoc networks and specialized ad hoc
systems. The latter can be built on top of specialized ad hoc networks.
Alternatively, they can be constructed independently of specialized ad hoc
networks, e.g., on top of general-purpose ad hoc networks.
It should be emphasized that SAHNS is interested only in solutions specific
to specialized ad hoc networks and systems. The Workshop is not interested
in broad general-purpose solutions for all ad hoc networks and systems, or
in generic solutions for extremely broad subclasses of ad hoc networks and
systems. For example, the Workshop is not interested in general-purpose
solutions for all sensornets or all P2P systems but is instead interested in
specialized solutions for their application-oriented subclasses.
One example of SAHNS targeted by this workshop are Incident Area Networks
(IANs), dedicated to single incidents or events. An IAN can be pre-deployed
for a planned event, such as a sporting or "nationally significant" event,
or can be dynamically deployed for an unplanned incident, such as a local
law enforcement situation or a natural disaster. Another example are
opportunistic resource utilization networks (e.g., oppnets), in which the
network reacts to a lack of resources by finding and incorporating "helpers"
that have needed resources or services.
Areas and topics of particular interest include, but are not limited
to:
a) Design issues for SAHNS:
o Novel network and system architectures
o Economically-based models and solutions
o Operating systems and middleware
o Customized network protocols (incl. cross-layer protocols)
o Resource management solutions (incl. resource discovery)
o Algorithms and models for localization and mobility management
o Privacy, security, and trust
o Reliability and dependability
o Novel hardware platforms
b) Development issues for SAHNS:
o Development methodologies, models and tools
o Analytical and validation models
o Performance evaluation and modeling (incl. simulation tools)
c) Operation and management issues for SAHNS:
o Topology control and management
o Energy control and management
o Resource and service discovery and control
o QoS provisioning and management
o Data management, data aggregation, data dissemination, and
query processing
o Assuring survivability and reliability
o Controls for privacy, security, and trust management
d) Application issues for SAHNS:
o Best current and future applications for SAHNS
o Experience with SAHNS deployments and products
o Social and business impacts of SAHNS-based applications
2. PAPER SUBMISSION
Papers must be submitted in the PDF format, with numbered pages.
They should have no more than 6 pages following the IEEE Computer Society
proceedings format (8.5 by 11 inch sheets, double-column, 10 point or larger
font, single-spaced).
The following information must be provided on the first page:
o Paper title
o Full names, affiliations and email addresses of all authors
o An abstract (up to 150 words)
o Five to ten keywords/phrases
o A footnote with the indication of the corresponding author,
plus the complete address, phone and fax numbers of the
corresponding author
Papers should be submitted by emailing them to:
<mailto:llilien@cs.wmich.edu> llilien(a)cs.wmich.edu
Each received submission will be confirmed, usually within two workdays.
3. PAPER REVIEW AND PUBLISHING
Each paper will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers and their
comments will be provided to the authors.
If accepted, the paper will be published in the workshop proceedings by the
IEEE Computer Society Press, provided that at least one of its authors
registers for ICDCS (which includes SAHNS) by the early registration
deadline.
As all conferences published by the IEEE Computer Society's Conference
Publishing Services (CPS), ICDCS proceedings will be indexed through INSPEC,
the leading English-language bibliographic information service for
scientific and technical literature. ICDCS proceedings will also be
submitted for indexing to EI's Engineering Information Index, Compendex, ISI
Thomson's Scientific and Technical Proceedings, ISTP/ISI Proceedings, and
Current Contents on Diskette (ISI Thomson).
We plan a special issue of an international journal with extended versions
of the selected SAHNS papers.

Cloud Computing refers to a recent trend in Information Technology (IT) that moves computing and data away from desktop and portable PCs into large data centers. The key driving forces behind the emergence of Cloud Computing includes the overcapacity of today’s large corporate data centers, the ubiquity of broadband and wireless networking, the falling cost of storage, and progressive improvements in Internet computing software. Currently, the main technical underpinnings of Cloud Computing infrastructures and services include virtualization, service-oriented software, Grid computing technologies, management of large facilities, power efficiency etc.
The emergence of Cloud Computing promises to streamline the on-demand provision of software, hardware, and data as a service, achieving economies of scale in the deployment and operation of IT solutions. It is believed that Cloud Computing will be a disruptive technology with profound implications not only for Internet services but also for the IT sector as a whole.
This special issue of IC seeks original articles describing research efforts and experiences concerning the deployment, efficient operation, and use of Cloud Computing infrastructures.
Appropriate topics include:
- Architecture and management of Cloud Computing infrastructures;
- Cloud Computing programming and application development;
- Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) applications;
- Discovery of services and data in Cloud Computing infrastructures;
- Cross-platform interoperability;
- Service-Level Agreements (SLAs), business models and pricing policies;
- Content and service distribution in Cloud Computing infrastructures;
- Power-efficiency and Cloud Computing;
- Privacy, security, ownership and reliability issues.
