WORKSHOP ON VIRTUALIZATION IN MOBILE COMPUTING (MobiVirt)
http://mobivirt08.cs.duke.edu/
Held in conjunction with ACM/USENIX MobiSys 2008
Breckenridge, Colorado, USA
June 17, 2008
The Workshop on Virtualization in Mobile Computing (MobiVirt) will
bring together researchers and practitioners interested in virtual
execution environments for mobile applications and systems. The
workshop seeks original papers on virtualization at all levels of the
mobile hardware and software stack. We are particularly interested in
position papers that propose new directions of research, advocate
nontraditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate
insightful discussion.
The workshop proceedings will be archived in the ACM Digital Library.
TOPIC AREAS OF INTEREST:
* Virtual machine monitors for mobile devices
* Application-level virtualization on mobile devices
* Virtual machines for high-level languages on mobile devices
* Abstractions for mobile shared-resource infrastructures (e.g. GENI
slivers and slices)
* Programming language support for virtualization suitable for mobile
environments
* Novel techniques and applications of interpreters on mobile devices
* Virtualization for security, reliability, and isolation on mobile
devices
* Operating system support for virtualization on mobile devices
* Applications of virtual wireless networks (e.g., Virtual WiFi)
* Mobile applications that use virtualization in novel ways
* Performance analysis and debugging for mobile virtual execution
environments
* Other experiences with mobile virtual execution environments
IMPORTANT DATES:
* Abstract submission deadline: April 14, 2008, at 11:59pm EDT
* Paper submission deadline: April 21, 2008, at 11:59pm EDT
* Notification of acceptance: May 23, 2008
* Final papers due: June 6, 2008
* Workshop date: June 17, 2008

below stated areas.
* IMPORTANT DATES:
***********************************
10 April, 2008 Submission deadline
***********************************
19 May, 2008 Notification of acceptance
2 June, 2008 Final manuscript
15 Sept, 2008 Workshop
* SCOPE:
With diversification of wireless access technologies and
their application fields, the role of wireless access is
no longer the last hop terminal access, but also for
repeating functionality such as mesh/multi-hop/ad-hoc/sensor
networking. Thereby more complicated wireless networking,
especially radio resource management is required to well
organize whole the networks. In such cases, it is almost
impossible to optimally conduct wireless resource management
based on a centralized control policy. Rather, distributed
and/or cooperative control techniques should be introduced
in necessary parts in any layer, such as distributed antenna,
cognitive radio, distributed MAC, and dynamic heterogeneous
networking. To systematize an academic basis of this new
research field and to discuss the adaptability of these new
technologies to enhance the performance of wireless
distributed networks (WDN), the workshop named WDN 2008
will be held. In order to achieve such purpose, we believe
that cross layer discussions among researchers in the
field of physical, MAC, and network layers are required.
WDN 2008 will be held in conjunction with PIMRC 2008,
as part of the conference workshops to make up various
contributions as well as invited contributions from many
research fields related to wireless distributed networks.
* TOPICS AREAS:
The main purpose of this workshop is to systematize an
academic basis over the various topics in wireless
distributed networks as listed below, and to discuss
the adaptability of these new technologies to enhance
the performance of wireless distributed networks.
- Application
Ad-hoc network, Multi-hop network,

CALL FOR PAPERS
SPECIAL SESSION
*** Mobile Mixed Reality Games ***
3rd International Conference on Digital Interactive Media
in Entertainment and Arts (DIMEA 2008)
10-12 September 2008, Athens, Greece
http://www.dimea2008.org
Submission Deadline: April 30, 2008
--------------------------------------------------------
Mobile Mixed Reality games are games that are played in a physical
environment augmented with virtual game artifacts. While former Mixed
Reality applications were mainly stationary, advances in mobile computing
and positioning technology have made this new type of games possible.
Players wear mobile computers equipped with positioning technology,
head-mounted displays, laptops, personal digital assistants, or mobile
phones in order to play this kind of games.
Early prototypes such as ARQuake, Human Pacman, or NetAttack showed the
technical feasibility but also the potentials of mobile Mixed Reality games.
Players find it fascinating to play their own avatar, to physically move in
the game world and to directly interact and compete with their co-players.
The close integration of Mixed Reality games in the physical environment
offers a new player experience that cannot be achieved with traditional
computer or console games.
While the technology has matured since the first games in this field leading
to Mixed Reality systems running on off-the-shelf computers and there are
already some related commercial systems available such as Sony's Eye of
Judgment, many issues related to the design, development and evaluation of
mobile Mixed Reality games are still open and need to be further researched.
We would like to invite papers to be submitted to this special session of
DIMEA 2008 that focus on one or several issues of Mobile Mixed Reality Games
including but not limited to:
. Design and evaluation of Augmented Reality and MR games
. Design guidelines for Augmented Reality or MR games
. Ethical issues of mobile Mixed Reality games
. Positioning technology for MR games including marker-based and marker-less
tracking
. MR hardware and software systems for games
. Tools for rapid prototyping of MR games
In the special session we will bring together researcher and practioneers
who work in this new and emerging field of MR games. The session will draw
the attention to the potentials of this new form of media in entertainment
and will push the state-of-the-art in this field.
*** SUBMISSIONS ***
Please note that the submission and review of papers for the Special Session
will be conducted through the same on-line system (www.dimea2008.org) used
for regular papers. Papers submitted to the Special Session should follow
the same style as regular DIMEA papers.
Authors are invited to submit full technical papers of not more than 8
pages, including tables, figures and references. Papers should present
original research related to the above mentioned scientific areas, not
published elsewhere.

INTER-PERF 2008
Third International Workshop on Interdisciplinary Systems Approach in
Performance Evaluation and Design of Computer & Communication Systems
October 24, 2008, Athens, Greece
http://www.inter-perf.org
Full Papers due: June 1, 2008
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
Communication networks is now a diverse area featuring sensor networks,
mobile networks, ad hoc networks, and various application layer
networks. A great deal of current research focuses on the networking
aspect of interacting computer systems, which are typically large scale
and highly dynamic. Interestingly, operational principles of these
networking systems may exhibit great similarity with complex systems
found in other sciences, when studied at an appropriate level of
abstraction. This observation suggests that models and techniques
developed in other sciences can potentially be used in order to
evaluate and understand the performance of existing communication
systems and also to drive design of new ones.
The workshop aims at getting together researchers and practitioners
from diverse areas, including biology, economics, physics, artificial
intelligence and social sciences, to present their contributions
applicable to performance evaluation and design of computer &
communications systems. In particular this third edition of the
workshop will focus on completely distributed self-organizing systems.
Approaches from the following research areas are considered of
particular interest:
* Biology
* Microeconomics
* Mechanism design
* Multiple agent systems
* Social networks

2nd IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications
(IEEE WiVeC'08)
21-22 September 2008, Calgary Marriott, 110 9th Avenue SE, Calgary,
Alberta T2G 5A6 Canada
http://www.ieeevtc.org/wivec2008/
Sponsored by the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS)
------------------------------------------------------------------------
----
Wireless vehicular communications has been identified as a key
technology for increasing road safety and transport efficiency, and
providing Internet access on the move to ensure wireless ubiquitous
connectivity. The potential of this technology has been acknowledged
with the establishment of ambitious research programs worldwide, such as
the European eSafety initiative, the US programs derived from the
Intelligent Vehicle Initiative and the Japanese InternetITS and AHS
programs.
The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) currently covers through its
areas of interest (Mobile Radio, Transportation Systems and Automotive
Electronics) all technical aspects needed to make wireless vehicular
communications a reality. As a result, the IEEE VTS society has decided
to establish a technical symposium on wireless vehicular communications,
with the first issues planned to be co-located with the reputed IEEE VTC
conferences.
The IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications
(WiVeC) will cover all vehicular wireless communications aspects of
Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and
Vehicle-to-Person (V2P) communications, including implications on
transport efficiency and safety, implications on automotive electronics,
liability issues, standardizations efforts and spectrum assignment.
After a successful first WiVeC edition in 2007
(http://www.ieeevtc.org/wivec2007/) with over 150 participants in the

Call for Demos
---------------
Together with the poster session, WiVeC will feature a demo session
designed to allow industrials and researchers to showcase their latest
industrial applications and research prototypes in WiVeC related topics.
Poster and demo sessions will be co-located to ensure maximum visibility
and a close interaction between presenters and participants. Demo
proposals covering innovative technologies, platforms, analysis tools
and applications related to wireless vehicular communications are
encouraged. Submissions describing both mature or innovative systems and
prototypes developed for commercial use or for research purposes, from
industries or universities, are encouraged. The submitted demo proposal
should include in a maximum of 2 A4 pages following the WiVeC paper
format:
1. Title, authors and contact information.
2. Technical content to be demonstrated.
3. An overview of the demonstration set-up (the inclusion of photographs
of the demonstrator are encouraged) and the results that will be shown
to attendees.
4. Any URLs that link to screen-shots, live demos, or related
information
The authors should also email the Demo Chair with information on the
equipment or facilities required for the system demonstration (e.g.,
power supplies, Internet connections, table dimensions, etc).
Demonstrations could be supported by a poster describing the general
set-up of the demonstration, its background and technical content to be
demonstrated. Demo participants interested to use a poster should also
inform the demos chair. Demonstrations will be selected based on their
novelty, technical quality, and attractiveness of the demonstrated
system. Accepted demonstrations will be included in IEEE Xplore and the
Conference CDROM.
Please note that for every accepted demonstration, it is required that
at least one person registers for the conference and presents the demo.
However, no additional paper charge is needed for authors that are
already presenting a regular paper in IEEE WiVeC'08.

CALL FOR PAPERS
EURASIP JOURNAL ON WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKS
RECENT PROGRESSES IN WIRELESS ACCESS IN VEHICULAR ENVIRONMENT
(WAVE) AND FUTURE VEHICULAR COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS:
THEORETICAL ANALYSIS AND IMPLEMENTATION
Wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE) technology comes into
sight as a state-of-the-art solution to contemporary vehicular
communications, which is anticipated to be widely applied in the near
future to radically improve the transportation environment in the
aspects of safety, intelligent management and data exchange services.
WAVE systems will fundamentally smooth the progress of Intelligent
Transportation Systems (ITS) by providing it with high performance
physical platforms. WAVE systems will build upon the IEEE 802.11p
standard, which is still active and expected to be ratified in April,
2009. Meanwhile, the VHF/UHF (700MHz) band vehicular communications
systems are attracting increasingly attention recently.
The fast varying and harsh vehicular environment bring about several
fresh research topics on the study of WAVE systems and future vehicular
communications systems, which include physical layer challenges
associated with mobile channels, capacity evaluation, novel network
configuration, effective media access control (MAC) protocols, and
robust routing and congestion control schemes.
The objective of this special section is to gather and circulate recent
progresses in this fast developing area of WAVE and future vehicular
communications systems spanning from theoretical analysis to testbed
setup, and from physical/MAC layers' enabling technology to network
protocol. These research and implementation activities will be
considerably helpful to the design of WAVE and future vehicular
communications systems by removing major technical barriers and
presenting theoretical guidance. This special issue will cover, but not
limit to, the following main topics:
· 700MHz/5.8GHz vehicle-to-vehicle
(V2V)/vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) single-input single-output
(SISO)/MIMO channel measurement and modeling, channel spatial and
temporal characteristics exploration;
· Doppler shift study, evaluation and estimate, time and
frequency synchronizations, channel estimate and prediction;
· Utilization of MIMO, space-time coding, smart antenna, adaptive
modulation and coding;
· Performance study and capacity analysis of V2V and V2I
communications operating over both 5.8GHz and 700Mz;
· Software radio, cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access
technologies applied to WAVE and future vehicular communications systems;
· Mesh network and other novel network configurations for
vehicular networks;
· Efficient MAC protocols development;
· Routing algorithms and congestion control schemes for both
real-time traffic warning message broadcasting and high-speed data exchange;
· Cross-layer design and optimization;
· Testbed or prototype activities.
