Call for Contributions (including PhD thesis abstracts)
ACM SIGMM Records
+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + ++ + + ++ + + + +
We are continuously accepting submissions for the SIGMM's quarterly
newsletter, the SIGMM Records, whose next edition will be published on
June 30.
The SIGMM Records are a channel for researchers to disseminate their
achievements to the multimedia research community at large. They are
accessible through the SIG's website, the dedicated mailing list
sigmm-records(a)simula.no
, and the ACM Digital Library (ISSN number 1947-4598). You can find
these editions at the website:
http://sigmm.org/records
Please visit the following newsletter web site that explains
appropriate content and provides submission instructions:
http://sigmm.org/records
Contributions that we solicit in particular are your statements and
summaries about the state of particular research topics in multimedia,
your views on the interaction between research and industry, and view
of the future. We are also very interested in publishing abstracts of
newly concluded PhD theses, news about SIG MM members who have been
granted awards and conference/workshop reports from SIGMM-related
events. We are also interested in including information about freely
available code and data sets that could be of interest to the
community, calls-for-paper for SIGMM-related events, opportunities for
awards and open researcher positions.
You can use the provided forms at http://sigmm.org/records or send an
email directions to enews-contributions(a)sigmm.org
Best regards,
The Editors of the ACM SIGMM Records:
Carsten Griwodz (Simula Research Laboratory)
Jun Wang (University College London)
Yi Cui (Vanderbuilt University)
Stephan Kopf (University of Mannheim)

Call For Papers
ACM Multimedia Systems 2010
February 22-23, 2010
Scottsdale, Arizona
www.mmsys.org
Over the years, ACM SIG Multimedia has received numerous requests to
create a multimedia systems conference, targeted at the systems
aspects of handling audio, image, video, and graphics data. We are
pleased to announce the First Annual ACM Multimedia Systems (MMSys)
Conference to be held February 22-23, 2009 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The ACM Multimedia Systems conference provides a forum for
researchers, engineers, and scientist to present and share their
latest research findings in multimedia systems. While research about
specific aspects of multimedia systems is regularly published in the
various proceedings and transactions of the networking, operating
system, real-time system, and database communities, MMSys aims to cut
across these domains in the context of multimedia data types. This
provides a unique opportunity to view the intersections and interplay
of the various approaches and solutions developed across these domians
to deal with multimedia data types. Furthermore, MMSys provides an
avenue for communicating research that addresses multimedia systems
holistically.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Multimedia Systems
* Multimedia Networking
* Multimedia Operating Systems
* Multimedia Databases
* Large-Scale and Remote Display Architectures
* Real-Time Support For Multimedia
* Networked Games
* Virtual and Augmented Worlds
* Cyber-Physical Systems
* Peer-to-Peer Architectures for Streaming and Multicast
* Modeling of Multimedia Systems
* Multimedia Interfaces
* Multimedia Middleware and Toolkits
* Multimedia Programming Languages
* Cloud-based Multimedia Processing
* Multi-core Support for Multimedia
* Mobile Multimedia Systems
Original papers on emerging and traditional areas of multimedia
systems are sought. All submissions should not currently be under
review in another venue and should be prepared using the standard
double-column ACM proceedings style format. Papers should be a maximum
of 12 pages in length.
Papers should be clearly motivated by themes and issues raised
primarily in the context of multimedia applications and data types
such as:
* Continuity of media over time
* Scalability of systems to support multimedia data
* Adaptation of media to support real-time requirements
In addition to the refereed paper publication, there will be two
unique aspects of the Multimedia Systems Conference:
* Multimedia Systems will have an archival site for all its
conferences. Each paper will have a blog area that will allow people
with questions and comments (moderated) about a paper to be
consolidated over time. We hope this will provide a service to the
entire community to allow people to come up to speed more quickly
about papers that have appeared at Multimedia Systems.
* To help facilitate the sharing and common use of data and
software, we will be having a software / data archive track that, as
part of the publication process, will result in a copy of the software
or data archive in the Multimedia Systems web site. This will allow
researchers to more quickly converge on common data sets for
comparisons.
Important Dates:
* September 15, 2009 - Full Paper Submission Deadline
* November 1, 2009 - Notification of Acceptance
* December 1, 2009 - Final Paper Due

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
SensorNets 2009: The First International School on Cyber-Physical and Sensor
Networks
Monastir, Tunisia, December 17-21, 2009
http://www.sensornets-school.org/
EARLY APPLICATION DEADLINE -- July 15, 2009
Overview
It is a common belief that computing has been increasingly integrating our
life. It results that the philosophy of networking is currently reaching a
new frontier, where the physical processes directly impact the logical
information for the sake of pervasive and ubiquitous control of the
surrounding environment. This objective can be achieved by means of
massively networked embedded systems, also known as cyber-physical systems
(CPS). The Wireless Sensor Network paradigm is known as the most prominent
enabling technology for CPS. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) has also
been a pioneer technology in defining the new concept of Internet-of-Things.
There is, as consequence, a tendency to change the concept of the Internet
from a network a data to a network of physical objects.
The objective of the the SensorNets 2009 School is to present a
comprehensive state-of-the-art of the enabling technologies for the concept
of Cyber-Physical Systems such as Wireless Sensor Networks, RFID, wireless
standard protocols, etc. from the basic concepts to the latest achievement
and the future challenges in the related research area.
Goals
The goals of the SensorNets 2009 School are as follows:
* Provide a basic survey of the current research works and
challenges on cyber-physical and sensor-based systems,

CALL FOR PAPERS
Workshop on the Emergence of Delay-/Disruption-Tolerant Networks (E-DTN)
Technically Sponsored by IEEE
12-14 October 2009, St.-Petersburg, Russia
(in conjunction with ICUMT 2009)
[Web: http://www.e-dtn.org/]
************************************************************************
Networking research for challenged environments has attracted
a lot of attention lately. Numerous attractive protocols have
been proposed, which are expected to network places and devices that
currently do not have the opportunity of “going online”. Such
environments reside at the edges of the current Internet infrastructure.
For example, public and private transport vehicles, underwater,
satellite and
deep-space networks are potential DTN deployments of interest.
Communication in the above-mentioned challenged environments is usually
infrastructureless and consists mainly of mobile battery-powered
devices. Moreover, mobility patterns are usually unknown, making
connectivity periods between DTN-nodes intermittent and opportunistic.
To achieve communication in such environments one has to deal with
several performance tradeoffs, such as end-to-end delivery delay and
energy consumption, or reliability and storage congestion.
Since, in most cases, end-to-end connectivity does not exist (hence the
difference from ad hoc networking) current Internet protocols
fail permanently.
Although there have already been a lot of research proposals for
routing, (storage) congestion control, error control and
application design for such networks, the IRTF has
focused mainly on the Bundle Protocol (BP); BP is an application
layer protocol that does not include the appropriate functionalities to
deal with issues such as routing or storage congestion, for example. That
said, DTN research and its future directions seem to lack a stable
basis. For example, it is not clear yet if a “one-fits-all” protocol
stack will be deployed, or if such an approach is feasible at all.
In contrast, several different protocols that each would suit the needs
of its specific architecture/setup would need to be able to interoperate.
This workshop seeks novel ideas in the form of preliminary or
work-in-progress
results as well as mature research papers for Delay-/Disruption
Tolerant Networks. We also encourage position papers that address and
criticize the past, current and future trends of DTN research and are
intended to trigger discussions on the whole spectrum of DTNs.
Topics include but are not limited to:
- DTN Routing
- Congestion and Storage Congestion Control
- Resource Sharing in DTN environments
- Network Coding techniques for DTNs
- Application Development
- DTN Management Platforms
- Error and Flow Control
- Experiences and Measurements from DTN testbeds
- Privacy and Security of Information in DTNs
- DTN Simulators and related tools
- Performance Evaluation and Metrics for DTN Research
- Performance and Design Tradeoffs for DTN Algorithms and Protocols
- Social Networking through DTNs
- Satellite Constellations and DTNs
- Naming/Addressing and interoperability issues with the Internet
architecture
- DTN Architectures:
-- Satellite Communications
-- Deep-space Communications
-- Underwater Communications
-- Connectivity in Developing Countries
-- Communication in Public and Private Transport Vehicles
IMPORTANT DATES:

IEEE Network Special Issue on
"Advances in Vehicular Communications Networks"
Background
Vehicular communications are being applied to improve safety, decrease
fuel consumption, and increase the capacity of existing roadways. Both
vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications are used
to implement a number of promising applications such as local hazard
warning, efficient route planning and coordination of traffic flows.
Even truly cooperative and, therefore, extremely challenging
applications like cross traffic collision avoidance are being
considered.
In the last years a number of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
related projects and initiatives have been carried out (or will be
completed soon). In Europe, for example, the European Commission
initiated the eSafety Program to reduce the road fatalities by 50%
before 2010 and to improve traffic efficiency. These R&D projects have
created a solid technical basis for vehicular communications, and some
of them have also performed some preliminary experiences, from what some
important results have been obtained ("lessons learned"), as for example
the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) in the US as well as
several projects in Europe.
All the aforementioned research efforts and initiatives can be
considered as the 'phase 1' in the development of vehicular
communications networks. This phase represents an initial and very
important step towards the goals of improving road safety and traffic
efficiency, and providing Internet services to the vehicles. Important
achievements, architectural decisions and conclusions have been the
outcome of this 'phase 1', such as the development of wireless physical
and MAC protocols suited for the vehicular environment (e.g. IEEE
802.11p), new network architectures (some of them not based on classical
TCP/IP), etc.
We are now witnessing the 'phase 2' of research and development in
vehicular communications networks, a new phase in which standardization
and field trials will play a key role, as well as the refinement and
extension of the network architectures and protocols defined in the
'phase 1'.
Scope and Contributions
The goal of this special issue is to share the research developments and
efforts of this new phase ('phase 2') in the vehicular communications
area. Paper submissions are invited on the following topics:
* Overview of state-of-the-art for vehicular communication
technologies and open challenges.
* Network protocols for cooperative vehicular communications, such as
geonetworking (geographical routing and addressing).
* Networking aspects for use of 2G/3G cellular systems for vehicular
communications.
* New system architectures enabling the provision of safety, traffic
efficiency and infotainment services in vehicular scenarios.
* Security, location privacy and reliability issues.
* Integration of IP protocols into the vehicular scenario.
* Standardization for vehicular communications worldwide,
interoperability and harmonization issues.
* Field operational tests (FOTs) for cooperative systems employing
vehicular communications networks.
* Regulatory aspects.

***********************************************************************
Subject and Purpose of the Workshop
-----------------------------------
This workshop covers comprehensively the algorithmic issues in the hot area
of ad hoc and sensor networking. In particular, sensor networks are
currently recognized as one of the priority research areas and research
activities are booming recently.
The workshop scope includes network layer problems like data communication
(routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and
topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor
elimination, etc.). The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or
greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global
information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple
local node behavior achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols
provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an
arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan. Sensor and
rooftop/mesh networks, for instance, have hundreds or thousands of nodes.
The objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research
results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area
of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques
Topics of Interest
------------------
We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished contributions
addressing various aspects of ad hoc networking. Possible topics of interest
include, but are not limited to:
* Medium access control for ad hoc networks

---------------------------
Scope:
--------
Since the advent of Intelligent Transportation Systems, research on the
use of information for real-time transportation system management has
been much conducted. The recent advances in wireless and sensor
technologies have rapidly promoted the seamless integration of
information of various types from transportation networks to benefit
drivers and provide a wide array of transportation-oriented services.
These advances in information technology and wireless communications
have enabled innovative and cost-effective mobile services and
applications for traffic networks. It is envisioned that inter-vehicle
and infrastructure-to-vehicle communications would become technically
practical in the near future, resulting in an operational “internet on
the road”. Due to its interdisciplinary nature, this area has sparked a
great deal of interest among researchers in wireless communication,
transportation and traffic engineering, vehicular technologies, network
operational research, etc. In addition, the area has gained significant
traction with both public agencies and private industry. The goal of
this special issue is to bring together the recent advances in vehicular
infrastructure integration (VII) and vehicle to vehicle communications
(V2V) paradigms that aim to develop efficient information dissemination
systems to significantly improve traffic management, safety, and control.
