Subject and Purpose of the Workshop
We lately witness a tremendous development in the wireless sensor
networking (WSN), which make it possible to
monitor, unobtrusively and for long periods of time the physical
environment and to collect the relevant data. For
many applications, the sensor networks cannot operate in complete
isolation. There must be a way enabling a
monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced
by the sensor network, and even to
interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read
the sensed value instantaneously, fix some
inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By
connecting the sensor network to an existing
network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet,
mobile smart networks, and notably the
global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be
straightforward. However, many questions
need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such
interconnection become effective. Suitability of IP
standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture.
Is it more effective to use fixed gateways?
Or is it better to employ a dynamic ad hoc mode where all nodes (or
several nodes) cooperatively and alternatively
act as gateways. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks
new vulnerabilities will take place. An
intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore,
but it might remotely launch attacks.
Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered.
Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also
important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. This
workshop is a forum for researchers,
academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the
interconnection of wireless sensor networks,
and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions.
Topics
Topics of the workshop consist of all aspects related to the
interconnection and integration of WSN to other
networks, including but not limited to:
- Interconnection architecture aspects
- Authentication and security issues
- Vulnerability, protection, and fault-tolerance of WSN
- Quality of Service (QoS) issues in WSN-based integrated networks
- Information processing
- Routing protocols for cross networks
- Network and transport layer protocols for cross networks
- Testbeds for integrated networks
- Middlewares
- Integrated applications and services for cross networks
- Sensor tasking, control, and actuation
- Distributed query processing
- Integration of Body area networks to WLAN and beyond
- In-network processing and aggregation
- Connectivity & longevity
- Location and time services
- Integration of sensor networks and web-based services

(IJARAS, www.igi-global.com/IJARAS)
WORKSHOP SCOPE
__________________________________________________________________
The vision of mobile and ubiquitous systems is becoming a reality
thanks to the recent advances in wireless communication and device
miniaturization. The wide-spread industrial uptake of these sy-
stems is however compromised by the abrupt changes and challenging
dependability requirements imposed by the highly error-prone and
heterogeneous mobile provisioning environment.
To overcome the intrinsic limitations of mobile devices and envi-
ronments, a variety of research studies have produced supporting
methods, proof-of-concept prototypes, and disciplines. However, it
is still unclear whether current solutions can satisfy the chal-
lenging adaptability and dependability requirements of the emer-
ging mobile ubiquitous services, such as mobile social networks,
smart urban mobility, wireless control of robots, and healthcare.
The ambition and mission of ADAMUS is to put on the foreground all
above issues and to foster the exchange of ideas and lively
discussion in order: to propose mechanisms to model, design, and
develop mobile ubiquitous systems; to devise conceptual models and
paradigms for change tolerance; to provide analytical and simula-
tion tools to measure system ability to withstand faults and to
optimally re-adjust to new environments; to develop scalable,
maintainable, cost-effective middleware infrastructures able to
support and ease the development of adaptive and dependable mobile
ubiquitous services.
Building on the success of the last three editions, ADAMUS 2010
aims at serving as a meeting ground and common platform of discus-
sion for research and industrial bodies in the field of adaptive
and dependable mobile ubiquitous systems.
Researchers and practitioners are encouraged to participate with
high quality papers able to identify open issues, to discuss the
limits and/or advantages of existing solutions, or to propose ori-
ginal and innovative techniques for adaptive and dependable appli-
cations over mobile environments. The main topics of the Workshop
include, but are not limited to the following:
- Dependability & adaptation requirements, and open issues for
mobile ubiquitous systems;
- Design principles, models, and techniques for realizing dependa-
ble and adaptive mobile ubiquitous systems;
- Context data provisioning and modelling, and context-based in-
frastructures;
- Context-aware service adaptation for mobile clients;
- Frameworks and techniques enabling advanced/demanding applica-
tions on mobile ubiquitous systems;
- Human-machine interaction and usability;
- Multi-device and highly heterogeneous ubiquitous systems;
- Cross-layer adaptation techniques;
- End-to-end approaches to the quality of experience of mobile
services;
- Autonomous systems for adaptation and dependability;
- Mobile-enabled middleware architectures and mechanisms for
heterogeneous wireless networks;
- Dependability and scalability of web technologies to ubiquitous
systems;
- Architectures for resource and network monitoring and adaptation
to networks conditions;
- Dependability measurement of mobile systems and services;
- Experience on real-world applications or prototypes of mobile
ubiquitous systems.

CALL FOR PAPERS
MobiCPS 2010 - The 1st IEEE International Workshop on Mobile
Cyber-Physical Systems
http://www.cpschina.org/mobicps
In conjunction with UIC2010
Xi'an, China
26-29 October, 2010
We are currently on the brink of a revolutionary transformation from
stand-alone
embedded systems to ubiquitous cyber-physical systems (CPS) that bridge
the virtual
world of computing and communications and the real world. Cyber-physical
systems are
tight integrations of computation, networking, and physical objects, in
which embedded
devices are networked to sense, monitor and control the physical world.
It is believed
that CPS will transform how we interact with the physical world just
like the Internet
transformed how we interact with one another. In particular, there is a
trend to build
CPS upon wireless and mobile networks as a consequence of unprecedented
proliferation
of these technologies in recent years. In addition to wireless sensors
and actuators,
the number of mobile devices that can support wirelessly networked
cyber-physical
applications has exploded. Some usual examples include smartphones,
PDAs, autonomous
robots, wearable computers, among others. Ubiquitous applications and
services enabled
by mobile CPS are opening up great opportunities for improving the
quality of our daily
life. To fully explore the potential of mobile CPS, however, significant
challenges are
yet to be overcome.

Special Issue on
Wireless Sensor Networks: from Theory to Practice
Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is characterized by the dense deployment
of sensor nodes that continuously observe physical phenomenon. The main
advantages of WSN include its low cost, rapid deployment,
self-organization, and fault tolerance. WSN has received tremendous
interests of various research communities, and significant progresses
have been made in various aspects including sensor platform development,
wireless communication and networking, application signal and
information processing, as well as network performance evaluation and
design. Such work has established good foundation for WSN research and
development.
The research and development of WSNs are stimulated by novel exciting
applications. For example, WSNs, particularly the wireless body sensor
network, make the old people/patient healthcare monitoring possible in
smart home environment, where advanced signal processing algorithms are
required to extract medical parameters like heart beat rate from raw
sensor measurements such as ECG signal, estimation algorithms are
required for occupant location and motion tracking, and machine learning
algorithms are required for occupant activity recognition. The indoor
environment (e.g., temperature and humidity) can be monitored by ambient
wireless sensor network, and help design highly efficient distributed
air-conditioning control system to improve the energy efficiency and
enhance occupant comfort.
Such WSN applications must address a number of key technological
challenges induced by limited network resources such as node energy and
network bandwidth. As a result, the application algorithms should be
resource constrained and the network protocols should be
application-driven. Advanced closed-loop system can be expected as an
integrated system solution to link the application algorithms and the
lower layer networking protocols by means of control theoretic or
optimization approaches. To be scalable and reliable, such algorithms
and protocols should also be distributed in nature via node local
processing and collaboration with limited information exchange to
achieve complex overall network goal.
This special issue is a follow-up of the previous special issue on
Networked Sensing, Decision Making and Control in Journal of Control
Theory and Applications organized by Lihua Xie and Frank L. Lewis, which
received warm responses. Different from that special issue, which mainly
addresses the theoretic approaches for WSNs and networked control
systems challenged by network uncertainties and limited resources, this
special issue will be more focused on novel real WSN applications and
application-driven research and development. Papers with real practices
on platform development, network deployment, and system operational
lessons or experience are particularly welcome. Topics of interest
include, but are not limited to:
· WSN theoretic approaches:
- Distributed and collaborative signal processing
- Target detection, classification, and tracking
- Network modeling and optimization
- Sensor tasking, control, and actuation
- Coverage and topology control
- Adaptive and mobile sampling
- Consensus estimation and cooperation
· WSN applications:
- Healthcare monitoring
- Environment monitoring
- Surveillance system
- Networked manufacturing system
- Structural health monitoring;
- Cognitive sensing and spectrum management
- Military and battlefield applications
All the submissions will be subject to peer review in accordance with
the standard review procedures of the Journal of Control Theory and
Applications. The Latex templete of the paper can be found at
