Pan Hui -------- Call for Papers and Demos for The 2nd Extreme Workshop on Communication - The Himalayan Expedition (ExtremeCom 2010) September 4-10, 2010 --In Cooperation with ACM SIGCOMM The Extreme Workshop on Communication (ExtremeCom) intends to bring together researchers and practitioners in areas related to challenged networks in order to gain experience and insight into the challenges that such environments pose for the network and the users. Such networks include delay and disruption tolerant networks, sparse sensor networks, power-efficient networking, as well as other networking paradigms for rural and remote areas. We aim to do this through a real-life experience in the Indian Himalayan region. Dharamsala, where the workshop will take place, is a well-frequented and loved destination for visitors. This mountainous town presents a unique mix of cultures and spiritual traditions and is also a starting point to a number of spectacular trekking trails. Dharamsala is also the place where Dharamsala Community Network came to life in February 2005, following the deregulation of WiFi for outdoor use in India. Built and operated by AirJaldi, a social enterprise, the network grew from 8 campuses in 2005 to over 2,000 computers spread in campuses, offices and homes within a radius of 70Km. in and around Dharamsala. AirJaldi is building additional networks in other rural locations in India. The ExtremeCom 2010 workshop is planned around AirJaldi’s Dharamsala network’s locations and facilities, thereby giving participants a great opportunity to be involved in a real-life network deployment. The workshop will start with a four-day field trip into the mountain regions around Dharamsala. During this time, participants will be given the opportunity to hike along the trails in the mountains, visit local villages and Tibetan settlements and meet the local population and users of the network. The combination of trekking and meetings will give participants a better idea of both the technical and user requirements of the network, as well as provide opportunities for informal research discussions between the participants. Participants who have their own solutions for scenarios like this will also, to as great an extent as possible, be encouraged to test and demonstrate it within this environment. (We are currently planning the mountain-based part of the workshop and some details are subject to change.) During the field trip, participants will be given the chance to work with AirJaldi to set up more relays, for example in schools along the hiking trail (details to be provided at a later stage). Upon reaching the end of the hike, we will conduct a two-day technical session in a more traditional conference venue with paper presentations and demos. The focus will still be on informal research discussions, with the hope that the recent field experience they have gone through together will give participants the ability to view and discuss the topics presented with additional insights. Authors should submit a 6-page paper outlining ideas and visions about the topics of the workshop or alternatively a 2-page proposal for a demo to be shown during the workshop. Visionary and thought-provoking papers that are likely to generate much discussion during the workshop are especially solicited. The aim of the workshop is to maintain an informal environment, where new research ideas can be discussed and developed. The accepted papers will be published in the ACM digital library. Topics for the workshop include, but are not limited to: * Testbeds for large-scale sustainable testing of DTN systems * Real deployments of networks in extreme environments * Business and service models for networks in rural, remote, and other challenging environments * User experience research * Delay tolerant networking * Low-power and intermittent-power protocols * Mechanisms for emergency and urgent communications * Networked applications and services Due to logistics and the need to conduct the workshop in harmony with the local population and the environment, the number of participants may be limited. Today's reality, however, is far from that. The home networking environment is a complex mix of heterogeneous technologies, and devices, all operating independently of each other, and certainly not offering the set of services originally imagined. As the number of devices inside the home increases, and their functionality becomes more complex, we foresee complexity imposing a barrier in the adoption of technology inside homes and a lot of frustration on the part of the users that try to deal with the pain of management and debugging of home services. Existing home networks are far from fulfilling the user expectations of high Quality of Experience, advanced home services and ubiquitous access to home network resources wh ile within or away from home. HomeNets aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to share new ideas and experiences and to discuss the challenges and important questions posed by today's and future home networks. We solicit stimulating, original, previously unpublished ideas on completed work, position papers, and/or work-in-progress papers. We further encourage papers that propose new research directions or could generate lively debate at the workshop. While co-located with ACM Sigcomm, Homenets intends to solicit papers from the computer science, and networking community, as well as the HCI community that has also turned its attention to the technology barriers faced by users in their homes. In recent years, the use of mobile handhelds has grown tremendously, as has the functionality for programmers. This platform will likely change the computing and communications landscape in radical ways in the years to come. With the increasing capabilities of these devices come increasing challenges spanning a wide range of domains: in the design of effective networking mechanisms, in application design, in user interface design, in energy efficiency, and in management of these devices. The goal of the second MobiHeld workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners to investigate challenges in designing and utilizing this platform for the Internet of tomorrow. For many applications, the sensor networks cannot operate in complete isolation. There must be a way enabling a monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced by the sensor network, and even to interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read the sensed value instantaneously, fix some inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By connecting the sensor network to an existing network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet, mobile smart networks, and notably the global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be straightforward. However, many questions need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such interconnection become effective. Suitability of IP standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture. Is it more effective to use fixed gateways? Or is it better to employ a dynamic ad hoc mode where all nodes (or several nodes) cooperatively and alternatively act as gateways. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks new vulnerabilities will take place. An intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore, but it might remotely launch attacks. Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered. Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. This workshop is a forum for researchers, academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the interconnection of wireless sensor networks, and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions. The value of accurate range/position information is the key requirement for many emerging applications in the public safety, commercial, and residential domains, such as locating firefighters or objects and instruments in warehouses and hospitals. As a result, of interest to the workshop will be NLOS identification and mitigation algorithms that show great promise in identifying troublesome channel conditions that can be mitigated or even eliminated to improve location accuracy. In addition, propagation measurement campaigns and modelling studies as well as testbeds are fundamental to the problem and will be highly valuable to the research community. While extracting accurate location information is fundamental to the design of positioning systems, cooperative and cognitive positioning algorithms exploiting short range communication links can enhance robustness. Geo-location information can also serve as complementary data to estimate and predict critical parameters for improving wireless communication networks. In cognitive radio networks, geo-location and context-aware algorithms can support sensing methods to overcome e.g. the hidden node problem. Machine learning techniques take advantage of heterogeneous networks to track mobile nodes using cooperative or non-cooperative sensor networks using the geo-location information. The goal of the workshop is to solicit the development of new positioning algorithms based both on (indoor) wireless communications and (outdoor) satellite navigation systems as well as new position-aware procedures to enhance the efficiency of communication networks. By bringing together academic and industrial efforts in geo-location research and location-enabled wireless communications, the workshop highlights the latest developments in: * NLOS identification & mitigation ranging/positioning algorithms; * Field tests of location systems and propagation and modeling studies for indoor ranging (TOA/RSS/AOA); * PHY/MAC algorithms/procedures for communication and positioning needs; * Positioning algorithms combined with short range ad-hoc communications; * Signal processing techniques for (seamless) indoor/outdoor localization; * Cooperative, cognitive, and machine learning techniques in heterogeneous wireless communication and sensor networks; * Hybrid positioning using both wireless communications and satellite navigation systems; * Active and passive localization/communication systems for RFID applications.
