Mobile software advances just as quickly with researchers and practitioners migrating from desktop-centric to smartphone-centric applications. Research in this area is driven by the all-mobile lifestyle, consumer demand and advances in hardware design and communication networks. The steady decrease of mobile data communication charges and the proliferation of devices with large screens, rich-multimedia support and built-in GPS, WiFi, sensors and compass give rise to novel mobile and nomadic applications. Mobile application developers face numerous challenges related with location and context awareness, personalization, mobile data management, porting over multiple platforms, devices fragmentation, etc. Service providers are responsible for application management, deployment models and middleware support. The goal of this special issue is to explore application-layer research and development in mobile computing and solicit high-quality research works outlining application development and industry status and trends. RTAS'11, the seventeenth in a series of annual conferences sponsored by IEEE, will be held in Chicago, IL, USA, as part of the Cyber-Physical Systems Week (CPS Week), April 11-14, 2011. CPS Week 2011 will bring together five leading conferences, namely the International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks (IPSN'11), the International Conference on Hybrid Systems (HSCC'11), the International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems (ICCPS'11), the Conference on Languages, Compilers, and Tools for Embedded Systems (LCTES'11), and RTAS'11. RTAS 2011 invites papers describing original contributions both to the state of art and the state of practice in the broad field of embedded and open real- time systems and computing. The scope of RTAS 2011 will consist of the traditional core area of real-time and embedded systems infrastructure and theory, as well as two additional areas of special emphasis (specialized tracks): Hardware/Software Integration and Co-design, Wireless Sensor Networks. Core Area: Real-Time and Embedded Systems. This thrust continues from previous years with a focus on embedded and real- time systems. Papers should describe original contributions to infrastructure, system support, or theoretical foundations for real-time or embedded computing. Submissions focusing on system design, implementation, and performance evaluation, as well as industrial experience papers, are encouraged. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: networks of embedded computers; real-time communication; real-time resource management and scheduling; operating system and middleware support for real-time or embedded systems; energy and temperature management; QoS management; multimedia embedded systems; security, dependability and reliability for real-time embedded systems; real-time system modeling and analysis; composability; control theoretical approaches and performance feedback control; formal methods, WCET analysis; software engineering and programming methodologies for real-time embedded systems; distributed real-time information and database systems. Area A: Hardware/Software Integration and Co-Design. This track focuses on design methodologies and tools for hardware/software integration and co-design of modern embedded systems for real-time applications. Such systems are increasingly complex and heterogeneous, both in terms of architectures and applications they need to support, so new approaches aimed at their efficient design and optimization are in great demand. General topics relevant to this track include various architecture- and software-related issues of embedded systems design which include, but are not limited to, architecture description languages and tools, WCET analysis, software architectures, design space exploration, synthesis and optimization. Of special interest are SoC design for real-time applications, special purpose functional units, specialized memory structures, multi-core chips and communication aspects, FPGA simulation and prototyping, software simulation and compilation for novel architectures and applications, as well as power, timing and predictability analyses. Area B: Wireless Sensor Networks. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has emerged as a new information paradigm for distributed real-time and embedded systems. Example applications include environment monitoring, emergency response, critical infrastructure protection, medical care, intelligent transportation, and smart manufacturing. The WSN track aims at fostering interaction and collaboration of researchers and exchanging new ideas in various aspects of sensor network research. The WSN track of RTAS is open to submissions addressing any major aspect of sensor networks. Submissions concerning real-time and embedded issues are encouraged, but not required. Authors are invited to submit original works that demonstrate current research on various aspects of wireless sensor network systems. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): sensor network applications and deployment experiences; sensor network architectures and protocols; programming abstractions; operating systems and middleware for sensor networks; real-time operation issues in sensor networks; distributed networked sensing; actuation and control; power and energy management/harvesting; wide-area sensing services; detection, classification, and estimation; localization and time synchronization; security and privacy. The 2011 Pervasive Healthcare conference aims to gather technology experts, practitioners, industry and international authorities contributing towards the assessment, development and deployment of pervasive medical based technologies, standards and procedures. The theme of this year’s conference is: Coping with the Challenges and Opportunities within Pervasive E-Healthcare (COPE), with a special focus on pervasive healthcare management and its ability to deliver timely, quality based information to medical practitioners in providing high levels of patient care. The challenges and opportunities within e-Healthcare are immense. A multidisciplinary and coordinated approach is needed from 1) user requirements, 2) technology development and 3) application integration, to help deliver a successful pervasive healthcare management system. Traditional healthcare environments are extremely complex and challenging to manage, as they are required to cope with an assortment of patient conditions under various circumstances with a number of resource constraints. Pervasive healthcare technologies seek to respond to a variety of these pressures by successfully integrating them within existing health care environments. Technologies, standards and procedures on their own provide little and or no meaningful service. Full papers (up to 8 pages submissions) - Full papers are submissions describing results and original research work not submitted or published elsewhere in one of the four main categories listed below. Full papers should properly place the work within the field, cite related work, and clearly indicate the innovative aspects of the work and its contribution to the field. 2. Posters (up to 4 pages submissions) - Authors are invited to submit work in progress whose preliminary results are already interesting to Pervasive Health audience. The poster track will give Pervasive Health attendees a way to learn about ongoing research initiatives and will provide presenters with an excellent opportunity to receive invaluable direct feedback from experts. 3. Demos (2 pages submissions) - The demos track will showcase the latest developments and prototypes related to the topics of interest of the conference. The expected demo submissions should describe the technical details of the demo alongside its contribution to the healthcare domain.. 4. Position Papers (2 pages submissions) - Position papers are envisioned to provide insight into the lessons learnt from current (industrial, practitioners, government, etc.) pervasive healthcare practice. The position papers track is envisioned to provide the view of practitioners to the pervasive health community in order to have a more clear understanding about the real needs of healthcare operators and in this way shorten the gap between technologists and the every-day needs of practitioners. 5. Workshops (2 pages submissions) Several workshops will be run in conjunction with the conference. The purpose of these workshops is to discuss work in progress and explore opportunities for new research related to pervasive healthcare. Proposals for workshops should be submitted directly to the workshops co-chairs, and proposals should indicate the preferred duration for the workshop (half/full-day). 6. Doctoral Consortium (4 pages) – We are please to announce the first Pervasive Healthcare Doctoral Consortium. This one day event will enable doctoral students to present and reflect on their work alongside other doctoral students and a panel of experts. Network Virtualization (NV) is becoming an increasingly important technology for the deployment of new network architectures that try to go beyond the Internet’s current capabilities. Virtualization of whole networks allows for increased flexibility with respect to resource management as well as for an efficient deployment of different network architectures in parallel but isolated from each other (e.g., coexistence of 3G and different beyond 3G mobile networks on the same physical hardware). While some virtualization techniques are well known for links (e.g., VLANs, MPLS, Tunneling, VPNs, and so on) the challenges lie more in virtualization of network nodes, whole networks, and an efficient management thereof. Accordingly, network virtualization has received significant attention in the network research community, but it is a field that is just beginning to be understood; recently an IRTF research group has been formed for this topic. The current technological challenges and solutions for network virtualization are of interest in this workshop. In addition, major drivers for the success of network virtualization are the considered use cases that can be used to derive important requirements for NV architectures. Network virtualization allows providing specialized, dependable, and predictable networks (e.g., a global IP-TV network, a safe kids’ network or a banking network) and also supports network resource scalability, thereby reducing time and overhead required for an introduction of new services (e.g., starting small scale deployments that can grow fast if the service is becoming more mature and popular). The definition of such use cases helps to design and evaluate (technically and economically) NV solutions. The workshop welcomes submissions from both researchers and practitioners that explore recent investigation on architectural and design issues as well as related implementation, experimentation, or simulation efforts towards realization of network virtualization for the future Internet. A particular focus lies on use cases for network virtualization. Original papers not under consideration of another conference, workshop or journal are encouraged to submit via Conftool (https://www.conftool.com/kivs11/). Submissions should be written in English, adhere to the eceasst format (special KIVS Workshop template will be provided soon), and comprise no more than 12 pages in total in this format.
