Dear SIGCOMM Community Members:
This is the April 2011 List Digest. If you want an announcement
relevant to the computer networks research community to appear in this
forum, please send me a message before the 1st of each month.
MAILING LIST POLICIES: This mailing list is for disseminating information
of interest to the general SIGCOMM membership. To keep information content
high and scope narrow, direct posts are restricted to events that are
sponsored by SIGCOMM. Due to the wide variety of topics in networking, it
focuses on relatively "mainstream" networking conferences and workshops.
In particular, due to the large number of venues in the wireless, mobile,
ad-hoc, and sensor areas, unless an event is sponsored or in-cooperation
with SIGCOMM, we do not advertize those topics, since there are many other
mechanisms and communities for doing so.
SENDING ME MAIL: This email address gets about 2500 emails a month, 99.999
percent of which is SPAM. please put [SIGCOMM] at the beginning of
the Subject: header, otherwise I will not see it.
SENDING TO THE MAILING LIST: This is a moderated mailing list that requires
my approval to post. Again, due to spam, I don't approve requests to post
to the list. Instead, send the request to me as described above.

CFP UbiComp 2011
http://www.ubicomp.org/ubicomp2011
The 13th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing (UbiComp
2011) will be held in Beijing, China on September 17-21, 2011.
UbiComp 2011 welcomes original, high-quality research contributions
that advance the state of the art in the design, development,
deployment, evaluation and understanding of ubiquitous computing
systems and their applications. Ubicomp is an interdisciplinary field
that includes technologies that bridge the digital and physical
worlds, systems and applications that incorporate such technologies,
infrastructures that support them, human activities and experiences
these technologies facilitate, and conceptual overviews that help us
understand – or challenge our understanding of – the impact of these
technologies.
Relevant topic areas for full papers and notes include, but are not
limited to:
• devices & techniques – descriptions of the design,
architecture, usage and evaluation of devices and techniques that
create valuable new capabilities for ubiquitous computing
• systems & infrastructures – descriptions of the design,
architecture, deployment and evaluation of systems and infrastructures
that support ubiquitous computing
• applications – descriptions of the design and/or study of
applications that leverage Ubicomp devices and systems
• methodologies & tools – new methods and tools applied to
studying or building Ubicomp systems and applications
• theories & models – critical analysis or organizing theory
with clear relevance to the design or study of Ubicomp systems
• experiences – empirical investigations of the use of new or
existing Ubicomp technologies with clear relevance to the design and
deployment of future Ubicomp systems
Although it is expected that papers will focus on one or a small
number of the aforementioned areas, authors should write for the
broader Ubicomp audience, and make clear how the work contributes to
the Ubicomp field as a whole.
UbiComp 2011 will also include workshops, tutorials, live
demonstrations, posters, video presentations, industrial exhibition
and a doctoral colloquium.
A new addition this year is a Student Film Festival. Student teams are
encouraged to submit video scenarios or prototypes (real or imagined)
of the future of Ubicomp. The juried festival will offer awards across
a number of categories.

ITU Kaleidoscope 2011:
The fully networked human? - Innovations for future networks and services
Conference website: http://itu-kaleidoscope.org/2011
Submission deadline: 15 May 2011
Conference date: 12-14 December 2011
Conference venue: University of Cape Town, South Africa
********************************************************************************
==The Conference==
Kaleidoscope 2011 The fully networked human? − Innovations for future
networks and services − is the fourth in a series of peer-reviewed
academic conferences organized by ITU that brings together a wide range
of ideas and views from universities, industry and research institutions
of different fields. The previous editions were held in Switzerland,
Argentina and India. The aim of Kaleidoscope is to identify emerging
developments in information and communication technologies (ICTs) at an
early stage, to generate successful products and services through the
development of international and open standards.
ICTs have already changed the way we live, work, learn, think and
communicate. Ever smaller and smarter sensors proliferate, wireless
networks are omnipresent, and smartphones are abundant. In the future,
the impact of ICTs will be further amplified through the increasing
deployment of ubiquitous/pervasive/human-centric computing and ambient
intelligence. In this environment, the user is placed at the center, and
virtualized networks, other IT resources, services and applications are
adaptively and automatically configured to support the users in carrying
out their everyday life activities.
Besides many technical issues to be addressed, this also raises serious
questions about access to ICTs, privacy, interoperability and
sustainability. Future technologies should be designed to benefit
humans, not the other way round. To address these issues, standards are
indispensable. Developing these standards will require concerted efforts
by many stakeholders, including relevant UN agencies. This conference
shall help to further such collaborations.
The fully networked human? − Innovations for future networks and
services is calling for original academic papers offering innovative and
bold approaches in research and development to integrate the real and
the digital worlds.
==Audience==
Kaleidoscope 2011 is targeted at all specialists with a role in the
field, including researchers, academics, students, engineers,
policy-makers and regulators, innovators and futurists from all over the
world.
==Date and venue==
12-14 December 2011, Cape Town, South Africa
==Submission of papers==
Prospective authors, from countries that are members of ITU, are invited
to submit complete, original papers with a maximum length of 4,500 words
within eight pages including summary and references, using the template
available on the event website. All papers will be reviewed through a
double-blind, peer-review process and handled electronically; see
http://itu-kaleidoscope.org/2011 for the online submission (EDAS).
==Deadlines==
Submission of full paper proposals: 15 May 2011
Notification of paper acceptance: 30 July 2011

URL: http://www.iet.ntnu.no/~jgding/ Subject and Purpose of the Workshop We lately witness a tremendous development in the wireless sensor networking (WSN), which make it possible to monitor, unobtrusively and for long periods of time the physical environment. Ensuring high connectivity within the network is vital for real applications. Moreover, for many applications, sensor networks cannot
operate in complete isolation. There must be a way enabling a monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced by the sensor network, and even to interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read the sensed values instantaneously, fix some inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By connecting the sensor network to an existing network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet, mobile network infrastructures, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and notably the global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be straightforward. The integration of RFID and WSN is one of the most promising technologies that will play an important role in emerging the Internet of the Things (IoT). For example, in a healthcare application, RFID tags can be used to track the elders whereas the sensors are used to monitor the elders’ conditions. However, many questions need answers, and many challenges
must be tackled before such interconnection becomes effective. Suitability of IP standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks, doors will be opened to new vulnerabilities. An intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore, but it might remotely launch attacks. Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered. Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. Connecting different WSNs is another issue that needs to be considered. A WSN might get partitioned into distinct segments due to battery exhaustion of many sensors. Providing mechanisms to restore connectivity by connecting those segments is of high importance. Also, an isolated segment of sensor nodes that cannot reach its sink can exploit the existence of a neighboring reachable WSN to deliver its sensed information. This workshop is a forum for
researchers, academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the interconnection of wireless sensor networks, and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions. Topics Topics of the workshop consist of all aspects related to WSN, with more focus on the interconnection and integration of WSN to other networks, as well as the connection between WSNs and connectivity issues. They include but are not limited to: - Interconnection architecture aspects - Sensor deployment and connectivity issues - Integration of WSN and RFID - Interconnecting sensor and actor networks - Interconnecting WSN and fixed network - InterconnectingWSN and mobile network (e.g., GSM, UAV; etc.) - Interconnecting onboard vehicular sensors and fixed infrastructure (V2I) - Integration of Body area networks to WLAN and beyond - Testdeds for integrated networks - Authentication, vulnerability, protection, and security issues - Fault-tolerance and dependability of WSN - Quality of Service
(QoS) issues - Routing and network protocols - Medium access control protocols - Transport protocols for congestion control, and Middlewares - Integrated applications and services for cross networks - In-network processing and aggregation - Location and time services - Integration of sensor networks and web-based services Submission guidelines and policy Submitted papers must represent original material that is not currently under review in any other conference or journal, and has not been previously published. Papers are restricted to a maximum length of 6 pages, including text, figures, and references. All papers will be peer reviewed. Accepted and registered papers will appear in the conference proceedings, and will be available on-line at IEEE Xplore digital library. At least one author of accepted papers is required to register and attend the workshop to present the paper. Papers should be prepared using the standard IEEE camera-ready template, and submitted in pdf format.
