The IEEE PerCom International Workshop on the Impact of Human Mobility
on Pervasive Systems and Applications (PerMoby 2012)
http://vecchio.iet.unipi.it/permoby
in conjunction with PerCom 2012 (http://www.percom.org)
March 19-23, Lugano, Switzerland
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
The key components of many pervasive systems and applications are already
deployed in the form of ubiquitous commercial products carried by humans.
Human mobility makes it possible for such key components to interact,
promoting cooperation and sharing of content, services and resources.
Smartphones, tablet PCs, and other personal devices act as mobile computing
elements able to gather information about the surrounding environment
according to the mobility of users. In other situations these devices
operate as mobile nodes of the computing and/or networking infrastructure,
where interaction and communication occur opportunistically.
The goal of PerMoby is to explore the impact of human mobility on the
achievement of the pervasive computing vision. The focus is on pervasive
applications, systems, and protocols where mobility plays an active role
in achieving the end goals.
Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of
human-centric applications and systems are solicited. Papers describing
prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems
are particularly welcome. The submission of papers on controversial issues
is also encouraged. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- pervasive systems and applications based on (or influenced by) human
mobility
- mobile phone sensing applications and systems
- opportunistic and participatory sensing, and anything in between
- opportunistic computing
- pervasive systems with humans in the loop
- wearable sensing systems
- mobility models
- distributed computing approaches that rely on human mobility
- impact of human mobility on wireless communication
- green pervasive applications that leverage human mobility
- mobility aware protocols
- opportunistic networking
PAPER SUBMISSION
Papers should contain original material and should not be previously
published or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts
are limited to a maximum of 6 pages in IEEE conference format. Accepted
papers will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press in the combined
PerCom 2012 Workshops Proceedings and will appear on IEEE Xplore. At least
one author of each accepted paper must register and attend the workshop
to present the paper. There is no workshop-only registration. An oral
presentation at the workshop is strictly required. Failure to present the
paper at the workshop will result in the withdrawal of the paper from
the proceedings as well as from IEEE Xplore. Paper submission will be
via EDAS (further details will be available on the workshop website).
IMPORTANT DATES
- Submission deadline: October 30, 2011
- Notification of acceptance: December 21, 2011

IEEE Communications Magazine
Call for Papers
Network Testing Series
The objective of the Network Testing Series of IEEE Communications
Magazine is to provide a forum across the academia and the industry to
address the design and implementation defects unveiled by network
testing. In the industry, testing has been a mean to evaluate the design
and implementation of a system. But in the academia, a more common
practice is to evaluate a design by mathematical analysis or simulation
without actual implementations. A less common practice is to evaluate a
design by testing a partial implementation. That is, the academia
focuses more deeply on algorithmic design evaluation while the
industry has broader concerns on both algorithmic design issues and
system implementation issues. Often an optimized algorithmic component
could not guarantee the optimal operation of the whole system when other
components throttle the overall performance.
This series thus serves as a forum to bridge the gap, where the design
or implementation defects found by either community could be referred by
another community. The defects could be found in various dimensions of
testing. The type of testing could be functionality, performance,
conformance, interoperability and stability of the systems under
test (SUT) in the lab or in the field. The SUT could be black-box
without source code or binary code, grey-box with binary code or
interface, or white-box with source code. For grey-box or white-box
testing, profiling would help to identify and diagnose system
bottlenecks. For black-box testing, benchmarking devices of the same
class could reflect the state of the art. The SUT could range from
link-layer systems such as Ethernet, WLAN, WiMAX, 3G/4G cellular, and
xDSL, to mid-layer switches and routers, upper-layer systems such as
VoIP, SIP signaling, multimedia, network security, and consumer devices
such as handhelds. In summary, the Network Testing Series solicits
articles falling in, but not limited to, the following topics:
* Testing functionality, performance, conformance, interoperability,
and stability
* Testing systems and services of 10G Ethernet, Power over Ethernet,
WLAN, WiMAX, 3G/4G cellular, xDSL, switches, routers, IPv6, VoIP,
SIP signaling, storage area networks, network security, and
consumer handhelds
* Testing various layers of network devices including black-boxes,
white-boxes, and grey-boxes
* Benchmarking and profiling network systems and services
* Network lab testing and field testing
* Designing network test methodologies, test tools, and test beds
* Evaluating false positive and negative of network security
* Analyzing lab-found and customer-found defects
Submission
Prospective authors are strongly encouraged to contact the Series
Editors before writing and submitting an article in order to ensure that
the article will be appropriate for the Series. The submitted articles
should not be published elsewhere or be under review for any other
conference or journal. Articles should be tutorial yet rigorous in
nature. Mathematical equations should not be used (although some simple
equations may be allowed if permission is granted by the Series Editor
and the Editor-in-Chief). Articles should not exceed 4500 words. Figures
and tables should be limited to a combined total of six. Complete
guidelines for prospective authors can be found at:
http://www.comsoc.org/livepubs/ci1/info/sub_guidelines.html.
Please send PDF (preferred) or MSWORD formatted papers to Manuscript
Central (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/commag-ieee), register or log
in, and go to the Author Center. Follow the instructions there, and
select the topic "Network Testing Series." Articles to be considered for

Passive and Active Measurement (PAM) Conference
March 13-14, 2012 Vienna, Austria
Call for Papers
The PAM conference has in the past focused on research and practical
applications of network measurement and analysis techniques. However
this year PAM is broadening its scope based upon numerous trends in this
area. The scope of network measurements today goes well beyond the
traditional Layer-3 and encompasses measurements in any type of
networked, networked applications, content distribution networks, online
social networks, overlay networks, and more. Measurement technology is
needed at all layers of the stack: for power profiling of hardware
components, at the MAC/network/transport layers, as well as up the stack
for application profiling and even to collect user feedback.
Measurements technologies are being designed for the digital home,
residential access networks, wireless and mobile access, enterprise, ISP
and data center networks. In recognition of these trends, PAM is
encouraging submission on a broad set of topics. We aim to understand
the role that measurement techniques can play in networked environments
and applications, across different layers, and how they can serve as
critical building blocks for broader measurement needs. At the same
time, PAM also continues with its original goal, to expand the
techniques, tools and practical uses of network measurement technology.
PAM seeks to bring together both the research and operation communities,
and encourages submission of early stage research.
Original papers are invited, but not limited to, the following topics:
§ Passive and Active Measurement Tools: Techniques, Design and
Experience
§ Characterization studies of network usage and networked applications
§ Measurements of social networks, game networks and networked
services at large.

this space, most research work is typically done based on analytical models
and/or extensive simulations. The focus of this workshop is to serve as
a forum
to share new ideas/experiences in all experimental aspects of multihop
wireless
networks and systems, and facilitate discussions of key unresolved
challenges
in this area. The workshop values results and insights obtained from
working
implementations more highly than those obtained solely from simulations,
but
papers explicitly comparing tested results and simulation results are
highly
solicited. Submitted papers should be original and previously unpublished.
The list of topics includes, but is not limited to:
• Design & evaluation of wireless testbeds, prototypes and platforms

CALL FOR PAPERS - NETHEALTH 2012
2nd Workshop on Networked Healthcare Technology (NetHealth 2012)
Co-located with COMSNETS 2012
(in cooperation with ACM, SIGCOMM and SIGMOBILE)
Bangalore, India
January 3, 2012
http://www.comsnets.org/nethealth.html
Important dates:
- Submissions due: October 16, 2011 (11:00pm IST) (1:30pm EST)
- Notification of acceptance: November 16, 2011
- Camera-ready: December 2, 2011
The world's pressing healthcare needs may benefit from judicious
application of networked information technology. Future networked
information systems will support, for example, clinical workflow,
remote diagnosis and consultation, e-prescribing, and mobile data
collection and surveillance, disease outbreak identification and
patient participation in their own well-being and care.
Mobile-computing technology may be particularly helpful in improving
access to healthcare (geography, monetary and informational), by
encouraging personal health management, and by enabling patient and
provider mobility. Wearable medical devices are emerging, to measure
essential vital signs like pulse, respiration, ECG, blood glucose
level, and patient mobility. Handheld devices support clinicians in
urban hospitals, and portable diagnostic kits allow remote healthcare
teams to more easily reach rural villages.
The widespread availability of mobile phones, and recent experiments
with low-cost, long-range broadband wireless networks, bring
connectivity to all these opportunities. We encourage papers that
present novel ideas for networked computing technology in support of
healthcare, and which are likely to invoke thoughtful discussion at
the workshop.
Research papers should focus on all aspects of networked healthcare
technologies. Of interest, though not exclusively, are the following
topics: remote diagnosis and remote consultation
* clinical applications of mobile or networked healthcare
* mobile and wearable medical sensing applications
* design of wearable and home-care health devices
* sensor networks for public health monitoring and surveillance
* networked mobile technology for rural healthcare
* security and privacy in networked healthcare
* experience from technology deployments
* usability of mobile health applications and devices
* applications to emergency response and disaster response
* cost-efficient and energy-efficient networking for remote healthcare
* remote access to electronic health records
Papers should be limited to 6 pages in IEEE format, not submitted
concurrently elsewhere in any form, and present new contributions
regarding either technology or experience in deploying technology.
