Electronic security systems may help to provide better and faster security and safety for the general public. Application scenarios may include intrusion detection and monitoring of large crowds in order to provide guidance in case of unexpected events (e.g., a mass panic). However, current security systems used within the public infrastructure are typically expensive, not trivial to deploy, difficult to operate and maintain, prone to malfunction due to individual component failures, and generally lack citizen privacy-friendliness. The advent of novel, large-scale distributed security systems based on wireless, lightweight sensors may enhance security and safety in public spaces. SESP 2012 is an international forum for researchers, developers, and practitioners to demonstrate new ideas, techniques, and tools that enable the design of inexpensive, flexible, resilient, and privacy-friendly security systems for enhanced security and safety in public spaces. The workshop welcomes academia, government, industry, and contributing individuals to submit unpublished papers in theoretical and practical aspects of computer, networking and communications security. SESP will provide participants with fresh ideas, inspiring challenges, and novel approaches in the context of wireless sensor-based safety and security in public spaces. Solutions have not been fully analyzed in favor of identifying novel corners in the solution space. ========================================================================= CALL FOR PAPERS PWSN 2012 4th International Workshop on Performance Control in Wireless Sensor Networks http://www.netrl.cs.ucy.ac.cy/pwsn2012/ May 18 2012, Hangzhou, China In conjunction with the 8th IEEE International Conference on Distributed Computing in Sensor Systems (DCOSS '12) ========================================================================= Wireless sensor networks are currently the subject of intense research and many prototype installations are currently investigated. However, most of the existing sensor network installations have in common that they are not considered time critical. No immediate action has to be undertaken as a response to the received data. In contrast, many envisioned future application areas of wireless sensor networks (such as plant automation and control, traffic management, medical applications, emergency solutions) require immediate and guaranteed actions. In such environments, data has to be transported reliably and in time through the sensor network towards the end user. To make the networking task more complex, in many applications the end user or the controlling intelligence is located remotely (e.g., remote monitoring, supervision and surveillance applications), and the wireless sensor network interworks with other networks (e.g., fixed infrastructure cellular, Internet). Due to the lack of appropriate models, components and protocols, it is currently very difficult to construct and operate a wireless sensor network with performance guarantees. Thus, the commercial success of wireless sensor networks in many application areas is unsure unless this particular problem is understood and solved. The PWSN workshop will bring together researchers and practitioners working on performance issues within wireless sensor networks. The workshop intends to examine research challenges associated with achieving dependability in WSNs, share experiences from real-life deployment of dependable sensor networks, discuss application-dependent wireless sensor-actuator design methodologies, illustrate dependable MAC, network and transport protocols, and in general, explore issues of reliability in WSNs. For urban planners and designers, these accumulations of digital traces are valuable sources of data in capturing the pulse of the city in an astonishing degree of temporal and spatial detail. Yet this condition of the hybrid city – which operates simultaneously in the digital and physical realms – also poses difficult questions about privacy, scale, and design, among many others. These questions must be addressed as we move toward achieving an augmented, fine-grained understanding of how the city functions – socially, economically and yes, even psychologically. This workshop is the second in this series building upon the successful PURBA 2011 workshop. It aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss and explore the research challenges and opportunities in applying the pervasive computing paradigm to urban spaces. We are seeking multi-disciplinary contributions that reveal interesting aspects about urban life and exploit the digital traces to create novel urban applications that benefit citizens, urban planners, and policy makers. Next generation wireless networks, heterogeneous access technologies, ad-hoc and sensor networks, and new Internet technologies are part of this pervasive environment. MED-HOC-NET 2012, as its previous 10 predecessors focuses on communication networking research, especially on new issues in Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks, which include Application Scenarios, Data-centric Operation, Autonomous Organization, Optimization and Control, Operation under Intermittent Connectivity, and Service Creation and Support. The scope of the workshop also includes new and exciting challenges in wireless mesh networks, sensor networks, vehicular networks, delay tolerant and opportunistic networks, and the opportunities provided or stemming from the social networks paradigm. As a major annual international workshop, the 11th MED-HOC-NET aims to serve as a platform for researchers and visionaries from the academia, the research laboratories, and the industry to present their latest work. Following recent successful conferences in Sicily (2006), Corfu (2007), Palma de Mallorca (2008), Haifa (2009), Juan-les-pins (2010), and Favignana Island (2011), Med-Hoc-Net 2012 will take place in Ayia Napa (CYPRUS).
