All submissions should be written in English with a maximum length of 9 single-spaced, double-column pages using 10pt size fonts on 8.5 ◊ 11 inch pages, including all figures, tables, and references. All paper submission will be electronic, in PDF format, through EDAS. Submitted papers will be reviewed by the Technical Program Committee, and each paper will receive at least three reviews. Accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings published by IEEE and will be presented at the conference. Based on reviews and TPC discussions, the TPC may choose to accept some papers as short papers (5 pages). For all papers, IEEE reserves the right to exclude the paper from distribution after the conference (e.g., removal from IEEE Xplore) if the paper is not presented at the conference. However, a battery-powered system has a finite operation time. Power supplies using energy- harvesting devices apparently open the door to unlimited and uninterrupted operation. This requires a dedicated power management that predicts available power budgets and aims at maximizing performance metrics for a given budget. Power management encompasses many facets, such as power leakage, radio duty cycle, sampling rates, harvesting efficiency, energy intake prediction, etc. WORKSHOP FORMAT AND TOPICS The focus of this workshop is to provide a platform for discussing intermediate research results and for vivid exchange of ideas. It is also intended to identify required steps and promising future research directions within scope in order to push the penetration power of energy-harvesting sensor networks one step forward. For that purpose, we particularly enencourage preliminary contributions by Ph.D. students in addition to completed work. In addition to paper presentations, there will be a poster and demo session. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Power management concepts for energy harvesting systems - Power-aware scheduling, algorithms, and operating systems - Network-wide and distributed energy management - Energy-aware network planning (e.g., routing, duty-cycle adaptation) - Scaling laws and fundamental limits - Energy and performance profiling - Online accounting of energy consumption - Energy-harvesting prototypes - Energy storage and buffers - Models of energy harvesters - Methods for energy intake prediction - Real-world deployments and field tests Submitted papers will be peer-reviewed in a blind review process. The setting is informal. Topics of interest are the same as research topics in the SIGCOMM conference call for papers. Although anyone can submit a poster/demo, preference will be given to posters/demos where the primary contribution is from one or more students. The SIGCOMM 2012 Poster/Demo committee will review all posters and demo proposals. At the conference, a student must present student posters. Authors of accepted papers in SIGCOMM 2012 may not submit a poster on the same work in those papers. Student Research Competition The SIGCOMM poster session will also serve as an ACM student research competition. Qualified entrants must have current ACM student membership, have graduate or undergraduate student status at the time of submission (May 2012, below), and be submitted by a single student author. Supervisors are not permitted to coauthor the poster. (Please contact the poster chairs if this restriction represents a hardship.) Undergraduates and graduate students will be treated in separate divisions. (Students starting their first year of graduate school at the time of the conference will be considered as undergraduates.) A small travel supplement is made available to accepted entrants: please also submit applications for travel grant support. The ACM SRC program is sponsored by Microsoft Research. Winners will advance to ACM Grand Finals of the Student Research Competition to compete against the winners of other ACM conferences. Why Should You Submit a Poster? This is a great chance especially for students to obtain interesting and valuable feedback on ongoing research from a knowledgeable crowd at the conference. In addition, the top few submissions will be forwarded for publication to ACM SIGCOMM's newsletter, the ACM Computer Communication Review (CCR). Travel Grants for Student Posters Students who are submitting posters are highly encouraged to examine if they are eligible for student travel grants. What is a Poster? We define a poster to be A0 paper size in portrait mode (841x1189mm), to which you can affix visually appealing material that describes your research. Alternatively, you can use the space as a continuum. You should prepare the best material (visually appealing and succinct) that effectively communicates your research problem, techniques, results, and what is novel and important about your work. Note that you do not submit such a large-format image; only an abstract describing in text what the poster would present. Jahrestagung der Gesellschaft fuer Informatik e.V., www.informatik2012.de Bildeten bisher vornehmlich Server, PCs, Laptops und Mobiltelefone die Mehrheit der Internetteilnehmer, so werden in einem zukuenftigen Internet miniaturisierte eingebettete Systeme mit stark begrenzten Ressourcen dominieren. Ein Beispiel fuer solche Systeme sind drahtlose Sensornetze, die einmal in die Umgebung ausgebracht autonom eine applikationsspezifische Ueberwachungsaufgabe erfuellen (z.B. Erkennung von Brandherden in einem Waldgebiet). Urspruenglich als isolierte Netze konzipiert, werden drahtlose Sensornetze zunehmend als integraler Bestandteil eines zukuenftigen Internets gesehen. Durch Verlaengerung der Internetprotokolle in die Sensornetze und damit in die reale Welt hinein entsteht ein Internet der Dinge (engl. Internet of Things, IoT), in dem der Zustand sensorbestueckter Objekte, Personen und Orte in Echtzeit verfuegbar sind und mittels Aktoren sogar beeinflusst werden koennen. Eine ganze Reihe wichtiger Anwendungen koennen von der resultierenden Infrastruktur profitieren. Beispielsweise kann das Internet der Dinge im Bereich "Smart Cities" die Lebensqualitaet verbessern und den Verbrauch von Ressourcen reduzieren. Im Bereich des "Ambient Assisted Living" wird durch das Internet der Dinge ein altersgerechtes autonomen Leben zu Hause ermoeglicht. Die Integration drahtloser Sensoren und Aktoren ins Internet und die Entwicklung von Anwendungen fuer das Internet der Dinge ist hoch komplex, da hier zwei bisher weitgehend voneinander getrennte Welten aufeinandertreffen: des Internet auf der einen Seite und eingebettete Systeme auf der anderen Seite. Es muss also eine Bruecke zwischen den grundlegend verschiedenen Entwurfs- und Entwicklungsmethoden, Protokollen, aber auch Werkzeugen in beiden Welten geschlagen werden. Wichtige Aspekte sind daher die Entwicklung neuartiger uebergreifender Konzepte, Methoden, Algorithmen und Softwareinfrastrukturen zur Integration eingebetteter Systeme ins Internet und zur Entwicklung von Anwendungen fuer das resultierende Internet der Dinge. Unfortunately, the wireless and mobile research communities lack such data, with typical human contact traces consisting of less than 100 nodes. We believe that large-scale datasets are important, not only in communication network design, but also for fundamental study in other academic disciplines, e.g., epidemiology, urban planning, and social science. Complex networks research has flourished since 1989 when the first large Internet (and later WWW) datasets became available. To achieve similar improvements in mobile networking and related fields, large-scale, and ideally planet-scale, datasets must be collected and made available. This 4th ACM HotPlanet workshop will challenge the community to collect large-scale human mobility traces as well as to propose novel mobility data processing and knowledge discovery techniques, also showcasing demonstrations of innovative realworld technology. Topics of interest include but are not restricted to: . Motivating applications for large-scale human mobility data collection, especially from other disciplines, e.g., epidemiology, sociology . Methods for collecting large-scale human mobility datasets . Techniques for mobility data storage and processing . Knowledge discovery from mobility data . Novel applications of large-scale human mobility datasets, e.g., human dynamics characterization and modeling . Planet-scale data collection infrastructures . Testbed federation for planet-scale data collection . Incentive models for encouraging users and businesses to contribute in providing/collecting data on a planet-wide scale . Enabling security, privacy and anonymity for large-scale data collection . Regulatory, legal and ethical issues in planet-wide data collection FULL PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES All submitted papers will be carefully evaluated based on their originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of expression. Accepted papers will be published by ACM and placed in the ACM Digital Library. Submissions must be in English, no longer than 6 pages and in PDF format, and use the ACM templates. All fonts must be embedded within the PDF and be Type 1 (scalable). In order to allow papers to appear in the ACM Digital Library, authors of accepted papers will be asked to submit, together with their camera-ready, an ACM proceedings copyright transfer form. Failure to send the camera-ready and copyright transfer on time will prevent the publication of the paper and its inclusion in the ACM Digital Library. Papers will be reviewed single blind.
