IEEE WiMob 2012
The 8th IEEE International Conference on Wireless
and Mobile Computing, Networking and Communications
8 - 10 October 2012
Barcelona, Spain
http://conferences.computer.org/WiMob2012
CALL FOR PAPERS
The IEEE WiMob conference is an international forum for the exchange of
experience and knowledge among researchers and developers concerned with
wireless and mobile technology. For seven years, the International IEEE
WiMob conference has provided unique opportunities for researchers to
interact, share new results, show live demonstrations, and discuss
emerging directions in Wireless Communications, Mobile Networking and
Ubiquitous Computing.
IEEE WiMob 2012 will be held at Casa Convalescència, Barcelona, Spain.
The conference will be hosted by Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya
(UPC). Barcelona is one of the most touristic towns in Europe and
capital of the Modernism. In fact, Casa Convalescència building is one
of the great works of Catalan Modernism, and was declared Historical
Artistic Monument in 1978 and World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO in
1997.
IEEE WiMob 2012 is soliciting high quality technical papers addressing
research challenges in the areas of wireless communications, wireless
networking, mobility, nomadicity, ubiquitous computing, services and
applications. Papers should present original work validated via
analysis, simulation or experimentation. Practical experiences and
Testbed trials also are welcome. IEEE WiMob 2012 will host three

Topic: Driverless Vehicles: Challenges and Future
Wireless communication for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) is
a promising technology to improve safety and security for all
transport modes, to reduce traffic congestion, to optimize the use of
existing infrastructures (road, rail maritime, fluvial) and support
information services in vehicles with the general purpose of reducing
the impact of transport on the environment. The development of
sustainable mobility is a key challenge for the development of urban
areas. A new era of vehicular technology that includes
vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I)
communication is already there in the public transport domain and this
should be generalized. This era will be driven by both
(pre-competitive) public-sector and private-sector funding.
Safety-related applications are not only taken into consideration, but
non-safety multimedia content providers are also becoming a new topic
of research. Key players in the industry, such as automotive
companies, public transport operators, railway industries and
government agencies, are investing heavily in the advanced research
and development of many ITS technologies and applications. This
research effort primarily focuses on the system development and
standardization of telematics. During recent ITS developments,
transportation telematics techniques have exhibited much progress,
e.g., interaction between vehicles and the infrastructure for
delivering services such as road-side assistance, automatic crash
notification, concierge assistance and vehicle condition reports.
These progresses are also really important in the public transport
domain (buses, metro, trains, tramways) for which V2V and V2I for
safety and non safety applications are a key component for the
exploitation but also for reducing energy consumption. A number of
IEEE 802.11p-like equipment prototypes have been built, and several
technical reports based on field trials have demonstrated the lack of
cutting-edge techniques to improve system performance. Furthermore,
all these applications require accurate and reliable positioning using
GNSS solutions alone or enhanced with map-matching and sensors fusion.
Technology and applications for ITS and telematics design are rapidly
emerging, and there is a critical need to bring together professional
researchers, intelligent engineers, academia, industry, standard
committees, the private sector and the public sector to exchange new
ideas. This conference aims to spur research progress by serving as a
forum in which both academia and industry can share experiences and
report original work regarding all aspects of vehicular communication,
e.g., Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs), cooperative systems,
information dissemination, road and rail safety, information and
emergency services, etc. Our primary goal is to promote meaningful
research in the cross-layered design of architectures, algorithms and
applications for vehicular communication environments in all transport
modes.

CFP (Deadline extended): Special Issue on Quality of Experience in Wireless Multimedia Systems (ETT)
by Periklis Chatzimisios 28 May '12
by Periklis Chatzimisios 28 May '12
28 May '12
-------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS-----------------
Transactions on Emerging Telecommunications Technologies (ETT)
Special Issue on Quality of Experience in Wireless Multimedia Systems
Aim and Scope:
One important objective of new broadband wireless communication networks
is to enable people to enjoy multimedia services anywhere at any time.
During the recent decade, a variety of techniques have been developed
that address Quality of Service (QoS) for multimedia applications in
wireless networks.
Good QoS is necessary, but not necessarily sufficient for good user
perception, enjoyment and acceptance of a service. Thus, Quality of
Experience (QoE) / Quality of Perception (QoP) has emerged as an
important concept, covering subjective and objective, qualitative and
quantitative measures of ultimate importance for users and thus, for
service providers and operators. QoE issues have been creating a new
assessment and management paradigm in multimedia systems, and they are
gaining special attention in wireless communication networks, as the
latter have proven to be quite hostile environments for multimedia
streaming due to volatile radio conditions and lacks of capacity. QoE
metrics are considered as important metrics to measure the quality level
of multimedia contents from the users' perspective. QoE-oriented
approaches aim to overcome the limitations of current QoS-aware schemes,
not only emerging as a new trend towards objective measures but also
providing necessary links to human perception.
The use of such metrics is expected to turn the optimization of wireless
networks more efficient in terms of user satisfaction than traditional
techniques that are focusing solely on objective QoS metrics such as
throughput, delay, jitter, throughput-based fairness, etc.QoE models
that include user perception and user behavior are of essential
importance for QoE-aware optimization of any communication system. In
particular, novel QoE-aware transmission approaches are encouraged to be
proposed to improve the efficiency of wireless networks for multimedia
services.
The aim of this feature topic issue isto encourage researchers to submit
their work related to QoE-aware wireless multimedia networks. Authors
with recent unpublished work on QoE modeling, measurements, analysis,
control and optimization are particularly encouraged to submit their
original contribution to this special issue. This feature topic also
aims at bringing together the state-of-the-art research results of QoE
issues for wireless multimedia networks.
Topics of Interest:
The topics relevant to this special issue include but are not limited to:
-- Relationships between traffic patterns, QoS and QoE parameters
-- QoE models, their applications and use cases
-- QoE inference from user behavior
-- QoE measurement methodologies and metrics (subjective, objective,
pseudo-subjective testing, etc.)
-- QoE for new wireless multimedia applications (e.g. 3D video)
-- QoE-based routing and resource management
-- QoE-aware transmission in wireless systems
-- QoE-based network management
-- QoE-aware cross-layer design
-- QoE-driven adaptation and control mechanisms for wireless systems and
devices
-- QoE-based optimization in wireless environments
-- Testbed for QoE performance evaluation
-- Media synchronization, playback, and buffer management
Papers must strictly focus on QoE issues and thus significantly go
beyond current QoS approaches. The editors maintain the right to reject
papers they deem to be out of scope of this special issue. Only
originally unpublished contributions and invited articles will be
considered for the issue. The papers should be formatted according to
the ETT guidelines

The First ACM Annual International Workshop on Mission-Oriented
Wireless Sensor Networking (ACM MiSeNet 2012)
In conjunction with ACM MobiCom 2012 Istanbul, Turkey, August 22-26, 2012
http://www-personal.engin.umd.umich.edu/~hammari/MiSeNet_Workshop2012.html
Call for Papers
Scope and Aim of ACM MiSeNet 2012
Mission-oriented sensor networks are next-generation time-varying
systems composed of both humans and mobile
sensors (e.g., vehicle-mounted, human-operated, or integrated with
mobile robots or UAVs) that collaborate and
coordinate to successfully accomplish complex real-time missions under
uncertainty. A major challenge in the
design of mission-oriented sensor networks arises in supporting dynamic
topology and disruption-tolerant
architecture, caused by mobility, which has significant impact on
performance in terms of sensing coverage, network
connectivity, and information quality. In such dynamic environments,
sensors should self-organize and reason in a
distributed manner about resource allocation, scheduling, forwarding,
caching, and in-network storage to accomplish
specific missions, while extending the operational network lifetime.
Another major challenge lies in accommodating
human input. Humans are the ultimate sensors. They are well-equipped to
monitor and report situations that would be
very difficult for machine sensors to understand. They also come with
their own challenges including imperfect reliability,
bias, and relative lack of predictability (compared to well-calibrated
sensors). The design of mission-oriented sensor
networks, where humans and sensors collaborate, should account for
trade-offs between several attributes such energy
consumption (due to mobility, sensing, and communication), reliability,
fault-tolerance, data collection latency, and quality
of information (such as video resolution, picture quality, type of
content, degree of redundancy, and level of summarization),
and their impact on mission objectives. It should accommodate
human-centric sensing modalities such as free-form text,
pictures, sound, and video, and should include mechanisms to handle
unpredictability, uncertainty, human error, and noise.
ACM MiSeNet 2012 aims to provide a forum for participants from academia
and industry to discuss topics in
mission-oriented sensor network research and practice. ACM MiSeNet 2012
serves as incubator for scientific
communities that share a particular research agenda in this area. ACM
MiSeNet 2012 will provide them with
opportunities to understand the major technical and application
challenges as well as exchange and discuss
scientific and engineering ideas related to architecture, protocols,
algorithms, and application design, at a
stage before they have matured to warrant conference/journal publications.
ACM MiSeNet 2012 seeks papers that present novel theoretical and
practical ideas as well as work in-progress,
which will lead to the development of solid foundations for the design,
analysis, and implementation of energy-efficient,
reliable, and secure mission-oriented networked sensing applications.
The topics of interest to ACM MiSeNet 2012 workshop include, but are not
limited to, the following:
- Theoretical foundations of mission-oriented networked sensing
- Modeling and analysis of mission-oriented sensor networks
- System design, implementation, and evaluation
- Medium access control and scheduling
