WORKSHOP "Methodical Approaches to Prove the Effects of Subliminal
Perception in Ubiquitous Computing Environments"

Pittsburgh, PA, USA; September 8, 2012
colocated with UbiComp 2012 (http://www.ubicomp.org/ubicomp2012)

Workshop website: http://www.pervasive.jku.at/UbiComp12
Submission deadline (position papers): May 28, 2012
------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------| WORKSHOP SUMMARY |--------------------------
There has been much debate around perception of subliminal cues, and
their effect on human behavior, especially whether such an effect indeed
exists or is only a false marketing myth (Vicary, 1957). As the preven-
tion of additional cognitive workload in HCI is a topic of increasing
importance, new forms or modalities of interaction between humans and
interfaces need to be explored.
One promising approach is to use subliminal stimulation or the injection
of information below aware perception. To throw light on this issue, the
workshop is centered on the questions how subliminal effects can be
scientifically supported or how a certain claim could be empirically re-
futed.
Researchers are welcome to submit position papers by May 28th, 2012 via
the electronic paper submission system available at the workshop website
(http://www.pervasive.jku.at/Ubicomp12/). Papers must describe the app-
roach and experimental setting used for testing subliminal interaction
in HCI, as well as provide a discussion whether or not the effect could
have been scientifically supported. More detailed information about aim,
submission and review process, etc. is available at the workshop website
(http://www.pervasive.jku.at/Ubicomp12/).
---------------------------| Workshop Themes |--------------------------
We are interested in receiving contributions & discussing topics at the
workshop related to:
* Philosophy, rationale for the use of subliminal interfaces in UbiComp
environments
* Ethical issues in application of subliminal perception and impact
* Risk assessment in subliminal interfaces (from the view of the user or
the system developer)
* Qualitative/quantitative evaluation methodologies for the perception
of subliminal information
* Subliminally delivered information and relation to other constructs
such as cognitive load, perceived performance, emotions, etc.
* Characteristics of subliminally delivered information (e.g., reachable
bandwidth, natural bounds, complexity of information, appropriate mo-
dalities, speed of perception, strength/ duration/frequency)
* Effectiveness of subliminal perception in UbiComp environments (such
as context-aware adaptive interfaces, user-aware adaptive interfaces,
personalized commercials,...)
* Subliminal perception using different modalities (visual: flashing
picture, video, text; auditory: compressed speech, music, non-speech
sounds; haptic/tactile; olfactory, or others)
* Issues with subliminal perception, such as social acceptance or pre-
ference, privacy issues, security issues
* Individual differences in threshold of subliminal perception (gender,
age, (dis)abilities, cognitive style, cultural/ethnologic background)
Please submit your position papers of up to 6 pages in SIGCHI archival

1. INTRODUCTION
The physical things and the human society have formed into the world we
live in. However, the emergence of information technologies enables a
new infrastructure for a technical, economic and social revolution,
which have changed the world we are used to. Cyber-physical systems
couple the cyber aspects of computing and communications with the
physical aspects of dynamics that must abide by the laws of physics.
Social computing has become more widely known because of proliferation
of online social networking in recent years. With the advent of
ubiquitous sensing, future social networks will become cyber-physical,
combining measured elements of the physical world. The convergence of
computational and physical processes as well as human's social behaviors
exhibits a variety of complicated characteristics, which leads to a lot
of challenges.
The 2012 IEEE International Conference on Cyber, Physical, and Social

Elsevier Future Generation Computer System(SCI I.F./2.365)
Information Systems Frontiers(Springer, SCI I.F./1.596)
Description
Power is becoming a critical resource to not only mobile, wireless, and
battery-powered devices, but also large-scale server systems and data
centers. Lower power consumption can significantly extend the usage time
of battery-powered devices or reduce heat-related malfunctions and Total
Cost of Ownership (TCO) for enterprise server systems and data centers.
However, existing solutions for power aware computing mostly focus on
the power reduction of the targeted computing systems at the sacrifice
of QoS (Quality of Service) performance. Due to the high-density of
service consolidation and development of new applications and the
increasing number of users with heterogeneous requests, providing users
with QoS guarantees while executing applications and saving power
consumption has become a crucial problem that needs to be addressed for
various computing systems. Moreover, with active deployment of
multi-core and many-core architecture, virtualization and the emerging
cloud comp!
uting infrastructure, power and QoS constraints raise more challenges
and have negative impacts on system performance. Hence, various aspects
of power and QoS aware related solutions, such as algorithms design,
performance evaluation and analysis, and prototypical implementation are
required to make the computing system more power efficient with little
loss of QoS performance.
This workshop focuses on the challenges imposed by power and QoS
constraints on computing systems, and on the different state-of-the-art
solutions proposed to overcome these challenges.
2012 International Workshop on Power and QoS Aware Computing
(PQoSCom2012) is a forum for professionals involved in energy efficiency
and QoS constraints in parallel and distributed computing systems and
data center operations and management. The goal of this workshop is to
bridge the gap between theory and practice in the field of power aware
and QoS constrained computing and bring together researchers and
practitioners from academia and industry. We believe that power and QoS
aware computing will benefit from close interaction between researchers
and industry practitioners, so that the research can inform current
deployments and deployment challenges can inform new research. In
support of this, PQoSCom 2012 will provide a forum for both academics
and industry practitioners to share their ideas and experiences, discuss
challenges and recent advances, introduce developments and tools,
identify open issues, present applications and enhancements for power
and QoS aware computi!
ng systems and report state-of-the-art and in-progress research,
leverage each other's perspectives, and identify new/emerging trends in
this important area.
We therefore cordially invite contributions that investigate these
issues, introduce new execution environments, apply performance
evaluations and show the applicability to science and enterprise
applications. We welcome various different kinds of papers that could
formalize, simplify and optimize all the aspects of existing large scale
computing systems and applications in science, engineering and business.
We particularly encourage the submission of position papers that
describe novel research directions and work that is in its formative
stages, and papers about practical experiences and lessons learned from
production systems.
Papers of applied research, industrial experience reports,
work-in-progress and vision papers with different criteria for each
category that describe recent advances and efforts in the design and
development of power and QoS aware computing, functionalities and
capabilities that will benefit many applications are also solicited.
List of topics
Topics of interests include, but are not limited to:
Novel Power-aware Architectures for Various Kind of Computing Systems
Power and QoS Optimization
