OVERVIEW
========
Robot vehicle platforms, often called “drones”, offer exciting new
opportunities for mobile computing. While traditional mobile systems
respond to device mobility (such as smartphones), drones allow computer
systems to actively control device location, allowing them to interact
with the physical world in new ways and with new-found scale,
efficiency, or precision. The startup cost to experiment with and build
real drone applications has dropped dramatically in recent years, also
thanks to technological developments driven by the smartphone industry

IEEE Communications Magazine, Feb. 2019
CALL FOR PAPERS
Information and communications technologies have progressed rapidly in this
millennium for people to communicate and exchange information using
multimedia (speech, video/image, text) and the same has extended to
internet of things (IoT) and machine-to-machine and machine-to-human
communication. Propelled by the explosive growth in IoT, this trend is only
going to accelerate in the years to come with new inventions in the =C3=A1r=
ea of
human-IoT interaction technologies to deliver powerful engaging and
intuitive experiences. But, these developments have remained confined to
only the sensing and transmission of aural and optical information in the
digital domain through the use of microphone, camera, speaker and display
devices. However, the ability to integrate the other three sensory
features, namely, olfactory (smell), gustatory (taste) and tactile (touch)
in information transfer and replication to deliver Star-Wars-like being
there experience are still far from reality.
Human bond communication (HBC) is a novel concept that incorporates all
five sensory information
from sensing to digitization to transmission and replication at the
receiver to allow more expressive, engaging, realistic and holistic
information between humans, and in some cases between humans and machines
(M2H) or IoTs.
This FT solicits articles that explore different aspects of HBC, IoTs for
HBC and the interplay between these two fields, M2M and M2H, which also
include the other three human sensory information (olfactory, tactile and
gustatory) in addition to aural and optical sensors. Although the FT
invites papers on research topics on sensing and replication, the focus of
these papers should be on the ICT angle in this regards and on how
information is encoded, transmitted and decoded reliably and securely in a
world which would increasingly become multi-sensory.
Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
- Communication aspects of biometric extending to all five senses
- Smart body area network
- Brain-to-brain communication
- Brain-to-brain interface, Brain-to-computer interface,
Computer-to-brain interface
- Gustatory, tactile, olfactory sensing and replication
- Human bond communication
- Human bond communication(s) interface
- Human unwelt expansi=C3=B3n
- Interplay between HBC and IoT
- Invasive (i.e. bionic) approaches
- Physical world augmentation (PWA) through the inclusion of all
five senses
- Privacy, security, and reliability in HBC
- Sensory augmentation, sensory substitution
- Wearable(s) with non-aural and non-optical sensor
- Wireless body area network
- Sensor encoding, transmission and decoding
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a novel paradigm which is shaping the
evolution of the future Internet. According to the vision underlying the
IoT, the next step in increasing the ubiquity of the Internet, after
connecting people anytime and everywhere, is to connect inanimate
objects. By providing objects with embedded communication capabilities
and a common addressing scheme, a highly distributed and ubiquitous
network of seamlessly connected heterogeneous devices is formed, which
can be fully integrated into the current Internet and mobile networks,
thus allowing for the development of new intelligent services available
anytime, anywhere, by anyone and anything.
Many applications with high social and business impact fall under the
IoT umbrella, including personal healthcare, smart grid, surveillance,
home automation, intelligent transportation, while it is expected that
new ones will emerge once the enabling technologies reach a stable state.
At the moment, four of the most important challenges are:
- Architectures, protocols and algorithms for an efficient
interconnection of smart objects, both between themselves and with
the (future) Internet within the 5G context.
- The creation of value-added services in cross-domain applications,
especially open and interoperable, enabled by the interconnection of
things / machines / smart objects, in such a way that they can be
integrated with current and new business and development processes.
- The support of a virtualized IoT based on the concepts of virtualized
components and functions within dense and heterogeneous environments.
- Security, privacy and trust in the IoT applications, for ensuring that
the provided services will protect the users' data, provide guarantees
that no malicious users/devices will affect the system decisions and
that the IoT applications will be secure and privacy-preserving
"by design".
The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and
researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for
discussion and technical presentations on the recent advances in theory,
application and implementation of the Internet of Things concept:
technologies, protocols, algorithms, and services.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- System architectures for the IoT
- Protocols and mechanisms for seamless IoT communications
- Modeling and simulation of large-scale IoT scenarios
- Enabling standards and technologies for the IoT
- Service platforms for IoT applications
- Business models and processes for IoT applications
- Energy optimization and sustainable operation of IoT devices
- Access network issues; including mobility management, data
dissemination and routing
- Testbeds for the IoT
- Security, privacy and Trust in the IoT context
- Experiences with IoT system prototypes and pilots
- Novel and emerging IoT applications; including eHealth/mHealth,
Smart Grid/Smart-Metering, Intelligent Transportation Systems,
Smart House/Neighborhood/Cities
- Industrial use cases showing gaps to be filled by future research
- Ethical issues in the IoT applications
- Optimized and robust dynamic spectrum access on IoT
- Integration of IoT with Cloud and Fog computing
- Emerging communication technologies for IoT,
e.g. Low Power WAN and D2D
- Protocols and architectures for Industrial IoT

people. Industrial Internet creates new ways to connect sensors and
actuators embedded in machines to the Internet. The large amounts of
data generated from sensors are analyzed to further understand the
operation and condition of machines and industrial systems, and even
enable autonomous operation and control of the entire systems.
Industrial Internet will impact a broad industrial spectrum including
manufacturing, aviation, transportation, power, oil and gas, healthcare,
smart cities, and buildings. The first IEEE International Conference on

IEEE Vehicular Technology Magazine Special Issue:
“Mobile Edge Computing for Vehicular Networks”
Driven by the “connected vehicles” vision, smart vehicles are on the road
equipped with advanced computation units, multiple communications
technologies, intelligent sensing platforms, and human computer interaction
devices. With the aid of these equipment and technologies, vehicles can
offer many new applications and services, such as active driving safety
assistance, self-driving cars, smart parking, road traffic monitoring, and
fleet management. In addition, there are new content-centric applications
for drivers and passengers. These applications typically require intensive
computation and demand low-delay data processing, e.g., video analytics
with real-time interaction, image-aided navigation, natural language
processing, and interactive gaming. Such applications pose great challenges
to the existing vehicular terminals and networks, especially in terms of
their computational resources.
To meet the ever-increasing computation demand in vehicular networks,
Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) is emerging as a very promising solution. With
the dramatically enhanced capacity, MEC is expected to bring a variety of
benefits to vehicular networks, including ultra low latency between smart
devices/vehicles and edge cloud for real-time, interactive, and
mission-critical applications; privacy and security in local communications
to access mobile edge cloud, and big data analytics at the point of capture
for novel safety-oriented applications. Despite the potentially significant
benefits of MEC, many challenges need to be addressed in this new paradigm.
A typical challenge is related to computation offloading which should
consider mobility-awareness and incentive in MEC for vehicular networks. In
addition, various computation tasks may have different resource
requirements, including the computation resources for task execution and
the communication resources for task transmission. In this case, a joint
optimization problem should consider both communications, computation and
control dimensions.
The objective of this special issue is to present the latest results,
insights, and perspectives on the new area of mobile edge computing for
vehicular networks. We are soliciting original contributions that have not
been published and are not currently under consideration by any other
journals. The topics of interest include, but not limited to:
· New concepts, architecture, and principles
· Cloud-edge integration and techniques for vehicular networks
· Software defined vehicular networks with mobile edge computing
· Edge computing supporting big data analytics for novel
applications and services (e.g., traffic, surveillance, infrastructure
planning)
· Edge computing supporting machine learning, deep learning for
self-driving cars
· Communications, computation and storage resource management and
optimization
· Computation offloading, traffic offloading
· Communications, computation, control convergence
· Edge caching for content sharing in vehicular networks
· Energy management, energy efficiency and greenness-performance
tradeoff
· Security and privacy
· QoS/QoE provision
· Use cases/applications highlighting the potential of mobile edge
computing for vehicular networks
Submissions should clearly identify how they relate to topics under
consideration in this special issue. Contributions describing an overall
working system and reporting real world deployment experiences are
particularly of interest. Submitted papers should contain state-of-the-art
research material presented in a tutorial or survey style. Manuscript
format must adhere to the IEEE VT Magazine submission guidelines. Articles
should be about 3,000 to 4,000 words long with 5-10 figures and 10-15
references. The use of mathematical equations should be limited to three.
