Eighth IEEE International Workshop on Sensors and Smart Cities
SSC 2022
June 20, 2022, Aalto University, Espoo, Finland.
http://ssc2022.unime.it
To be held in conjunction with
Eighth IEEE International Conference on Smart Computing (SMARTCOMP 2022)
A smart city represents an improvement of today's cities both functionally
and structurally, that strategically utilizes many smart factors, such as
information and communications technology (ICT), to increase the city's
sustainable growth and strengthen city functions, while ensuring citizens'
quality of life and health. Cities can be viewed as a microcosm of
"objects" with which citizens interact daily: street furniture, public
buildings, transportation, monuments, public lighting and much more.
Moreover, a continuous monitoring of a city's status occurs through sensors
and processors applied within the real-world infrastructure. The Internet
of Things (IoT) concept imagines all these objects being "smart", connected
to the Internet, and able to communicate with each other and with the
external environment, interacting and sharing data and information. Each
object in the IoT can be both the collector and distributor of information
regarding mobility, energy consumption, air pollution as well as
potentially offering cultural and tourist information. As a consequence,
cyber and real worlds are strongly linked in a smart city. New services can
be deployed when needed and evaluation mechanisms will be set up to assess
the health and success of a smart city.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together innovative developments in
areas related to sensors and smart cities, including but not limited to:
* computing and sensing infrastructures
* cost (of node, energy, development,
deployment, maintenance)
* communication (security, resilience, low energy)
* adaptability (to environment, energy, faults)
* data processing (on nodes, distributed,
aggregation, discovery, big data)
* self-learning (pattern discovery,
prediction, auto-configuration)
* deployment (cost, error prevention,
localization)
* maintenance (troubleshooting, recurrent costs)
* applications (both new and enjoying new life)
* smart users experience
* trust and privacy
* crowdsourcing, crowdsensing, participatory
sensing
* cognition and awareness
* cyber-physical systems
* smart tourism
Both review articles and original research papers relating to sensors and
smart cities are solicited. There is particular interest for papers with
advances towards practical experiences and services overcoming the adoption
barriers for sensors and smart cities.
Submission Guidelines
Paper submissions should be no longer than 6 pages with a font size of 10
using the IEEE conference template
(https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html). Papers must
be submitted electronically as PDF files. All submitted papers will be
subject to single blind peer reviews by Technical Program Committee members
and other experts in the field. All presented papers in the conference will
be published in the proceedings of the conference and submitted to the IEEE
Xplore Digital Library. Authors are requested to first register their
submissions and submit their manuscripts in PDF format via EDAS
(https://www.edas.info/newPaper.php?c=29353). Note that at least one author
of each accepted paper must register and attend the workshop to present the
paper. Failure to present the paper at the workshop will result in the
withdrawal of the paper from the Proceedings.
Important dates
* Submission: 25 March 2022 extended to 14 April 2022
* Notification: 30 April 2022

Aims and Scope
Recently, the rapid development of Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles (UAVs),
also known as drones, has highlighted a plethora of emergent applications
such as infrastructure inspection and surveillance, smart agriculture, seek
and rescue, parcel delivery, communications, and post-disaster recovery. In
all these applications, UAVs may coexist with ground Internet of Things
(IoT) devices. For example, UAVs autonomously perform remote sensing
relaying the collected data by the sensors. Moreover, single or multiple
UAVs can cooperatively collaborate providing services that require
efficient protocols where multiple objectives and constraints should be
accounted for.
For this workshop, we seek papers that combine the design of algorithms and
testbed implementations to develop the theoretical foundations for UAVs as
well as the synergies with IoT devices. The numerous emergent applications
raised by IoT may require an interdisciplinary approach, involving
techniques from algorithm foundations and different areas, such as computer
networks, artificial intelligence, concurrent, parallel and distributed
computing, security, digital signal, image and sound processing.
Topics of Interest
- Autonomous sensing via UAVs
- Topology monitoring with UAVs
- Remote sensing networks via UAVs
- Communication protocols of UAVs over IoT

Unconventional Security for Wireless Communications (USWC 2022): Call for
Papers
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 1st Workshop on Unconventional Security for Wireless Communications
(UWSC 2022) -- https://www.tii.ae/workshop/uswc
Co-located with EWSN 2022 -- October 3, 2022
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Recent advances in wireless communications have supported an increasingly
interconnected world: from ultra high-throughput and scalable 5G Massive
MIMO systems, to batteryless embedded sensor devices capable of running for
years on limited or scavenged power. Behind these networks, the revolution
in cloud computing has enabled softwarization of services and unprecedented
global access to data. Governments and companies are leveraging these
technologies in ways that ensure modern wireless communication networks
increasingly permeate all aspects of our everyday lives: from managing
power grids, to delivering your pizza.
Unfortunately, despite several recent high-profile cases of industrial
espionage and embarrassing public data leaks, security is still often
considered as an afterthought, even as everything from car journeys, to
infrastructure monitoring, to delivering your pizza is increasingly
automated. Even when security is prioritized, the pace of technological
change and inherent novelty of use cases can expose unforeseen weaknesses –
sometimes to dire consequences.
The Workshop on Unconventional Security in Wireless Communications (USWC)
aims to bring together researchers from fields such as Networking, AI, ML,
Telecoms, and Digital Security, and invites them to “think outside the
box”. Not only on how wireless communications and networks should, and
could, be secured, but how unconventional attacks may circumvent
established security dogma. We welcome submissions with unusual takes on
existing techniques, proposals for novel security solutions, exposure of
atypical weaknesses, and the application of unconventional approaches to
solve next-generation wireless security challenges.
UWSC provides a venue for researchers from diverse backgrounds to apply
novel technologies and techniques in unusual and surprising ways – whether
to solve current challenges, or expose inherent weaknesses. Above all, UWSC
aims to be a forum for lively discussion and engaged debate on past,
present, and future of communication security in an interconnected world.
*** Call for Papers ***
We invite researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to
submit papers (up to 6 pages, double-column) focusing on topics such as:
