Although the convergence of communication, caching, control and computing (4C) resources can be leveraged to effectively enable 6G services and applications over vehicle-to-everything (V2X) channels, multiple challenges must be addressed to allow connected vehicles to meet the 6G requirements, to securely and efficiently orchestrate their resources and to develop self-organizing and self-sustaining capabilities. Emerging communication paradigms that make effective data transmission in very high dynamic contexts include the reprogrammability of the environment by the means of Reprogrammable Intelligent Metasurfaces (RIMs). Moreover, Visible Light Communication (VLC) can improve the reliability of V2X interactions and be effective in terms of security and enhanced data rate. With focus on networking aspects, Software Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) can bring programmability, flexibility and scalability in connected vehicles, simplify network management and promote an efficient and fair use of the distributed 4C resources and programmable metasurfaces. They can be complemented by revolutionary networking models, such as Information Centric Networking (ICN), to provide distributed caching and computing services. This special issue aims to collect proposals that deal with revolutionary communication and networking technologies for connected vehicles, in a holistic fashion or at different layers, to meet the expectations of the 6G era. The International Teletraffic Congress ITC 33, to be held during 31/08-03/09 2021, at the Avignon University, France, is the 33th edition of this international flagship congress in the field of networking science and practice. ITC was founded back in 1955 by enthusiastic scientists and engineers who were willing to deploy networks in a holistic way. Since then, it has established a multi-decade tradition as the primary forum for presenting and discussing the latest technical advances in the broad areas of teletraffic models, network systems, and measurements. ITC 33 focuses on the future networks taking advantage of 5G and artificial intelligence (AI), towards “AI-integrated Networks”. Indeed, service providers from all over the world are already reaping the benefits of integrating AI into their networks. For ITC 33, cutting-edge papers spanning both theory and experimentation are solicited in all areas of networking, ranging from traffic engineering and control with application also to emerging softwarized/virtualized network paradigms, up to innovative wireless scenarios brought about by the emergence of 5G and IoT systems. We especially encourage original contributions which bridge the gap between performance modeling and real-life operational aspects, including works which leverage measurement data to provide a better understanding of the wired and wireless networks operation under realistic conditions. ITC 33 solicits original contributions that address the latest changes and developments in design, modelling, measurement, and performance evaluation of communication systems, networks, and services. ITC 33 is structured into eight different areas. The objectives in these areas include, among others, energy-efficiency and green IT, network security and privacy, QoS and QoE, and resilience. (2: SDN++) Softwarization "conquers" the net. What has started with SDN and NFV will continue to lead to more flexibility and enable disruptive change, such as the competitive co-existence of old and new, e.g., content-centric, world-wide networks. As this softwarization significantly increases the complexity of today's networks, new and more security problems will result. Moreover, softwarization comes at a performance price, which is at odds with mission-critical, real-time communication. (3: MCA) Mission-critical applications, formerly confined to dedicated real-time systems and (TSN, industrial Ethernet, ...) networks, are conquering public and wide area networks. This impacts technologies and protocols (such as 5G URLLC) as well as architectures, such as approaches to move cloud functionality closer to the action scene, e.g., via fog and edge computing. (4: AI.net) The resurgence of AI, evoked by stunning successes of machine learning, boosts the need for computing resources that cannot be embedded in myriads of IoT devices and energy-critical handhelds like smartphones. This and the need for joint processing, requires shuffling 'big data' from the action scene to those resources, accelerating the need for offloading approaches and, depending on the application and the distribution of stakeholders, aggravating the three afore-mentioned challenges. These four challenges - abbreviated as IoT, SDN++, MCA, and AI - are densely interwoven, both mutually supporting and mutually aggravating each other. In the TOIT special issue, we bring together contributions to all four challenges and seek to track down their positive and negative interdependencies. Supported by lightweight virtualization technologies such as Docker Containers and Unikernels, the decentralized edge computing paradigm aims to offer efficient access to various geographically distributed computing resources. In this context, the EdgeSys workshop focuses on the confluence of edge computing, decentralized communication and distributed computing. For example, there are several industry-led edge computing and orchestration platforms such as KubeEdge, Firecracker, and Azure Sphere. In the decentralized communication space, systems such as Mastodon and Matrix have been developed. There are also lots of academic research activities on mobile data and computation offloading (e.g., Cloudlet, Talket, ThinkAir, MAUI, and MADNet) and systems that combine decentralization and computation/storage offloading together, such as IPFS. In addition, as data analytics and machine learning are increasingly offered as a service, the next phase of evolution is to extend the offerings beyond basic algorithms and push the analytics closer to the edge where the data from users and devices is first captured. In this regard, edge computing has the potential to enable a new class of real-time data analytics platforms and services. We expect such edge-driven data analytics will emerge and reshape the existing cloud-based data processing pipelines. The knowledge from this new edge pipeline can further power future cyber-physical and network services, such as cognitive assistance and proactive accident prevention for autonomous driving. The 4th International Workshop on Edge Systems, Analytics and Networking (EdgeSys'21), in conjunction with ACM EuroSys 2021, aims to bring together system researchers, data scientists, engineers and practitioners to identify open directions and discuss the latest research ideas and results on edge systems, analytics and networking, especially those related to novel and emerging technologies and use cases. In the past decade, the research community has produced proven solutions to build low-power mesh networks. Traditionally, the focus has been on short-range radio communication (e.g., ZigBee, Bluetooth, ZWave). An appealing alternative that have gained momentum in the IoT landscape is to equip the nodes with long-range radio modules. As a result, long-range radio communication technologies (e.g., SigFox, LoRa, and 802.15.4g) are considered as candidate technologies for many low-power wide area network (LPWAN) applications, especially those that require extended coverage such as citywide sensing, environmental monitoring, or remote infrastructure monitoring. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the field of IoT from both academia and industry, to discuss and explore short- and long-range solutions, the tradeoffs between these two paradigms, as well as how they can be used in synergy. In order to push the state of the art, several points need to be addressed: new features for the long-range technologies (i.e., over-the-air updates, roaming), radio resource management, regulations and policies on spectrum usage and sharing, business case analysis that are more well suited for certain vertical markets. ACM SenSys brings together academic, industry, and government professionals to a single-track, highly selective forum that takes a broad view on the areas of computing relevant to the future of networked embedded sensor systems. Topics of interests include, but are not limited to, the following: - New platforms and hardware designs for networked sensor systems - New communication paradigms for ubiquitous connectivity - Low-power wireless media access control, network, and transport protocol designs - Systems software, including operating systems, network stacks, and programming - System services such as time and location estimation - Low-power operation, energy harvesting, and energy management - Resource-efficient machine learning for embedded and mobile platforms - Mobile and pervasive systems with elements of networked sensing - Data management and analytics, including quality, integrity, and trustworthiness - Learning algorithms and models for perception, understanding, and adaptation - Heterogeneous collaborative sensing, including human-robot sensor systems - Security and privacy in networked sensor applications and systems - Fault-tolerance, dependability, and verification - Applications and deployment experiences We invite technical papers describing original ideas, groundbreaking results, and real-world experiences involving innovative networked embedded sensor systems. Successful submissions will explain why the topic is relevant to a vision of the future of sensing systems. Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, clarity, relevance, and correctness. Important Dates Paper Registration and Abstract: May 28, 2021, 23:59 AoE Paper Submission: June 4, 2021, 23:59 AoE Notification of Paper Acceptance: September 8, 2021 Submission Guidelines Submitted papers must be unpublished and must not be currently under review for any other publication. Submissions must be full papers, at most 12 single-spaced 8.5” x 11” pages with 9-pt font size in two-column format, including figures and tables. As for references, submissions may include as many pages as needed. All submissions must use the LaTeX (preferred) or Word styles found here. LaTeX submissions should use the acmart.cls template (sigconf option), with the default 9-pt font. This format will be used also for the camera-ready version of accepted papers. Authors must make a good faith effort to anonymize their submissions. Papers that do not meet the size, formatting, and anonymization requirements will not be reviewed. We require each paper to be in Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) and submitted through the conference submission system. Papers that describe experiments on human subjects, or that analyze nonpublic data derived from human subjects (even anonymized data), should briefly describe how the research protocol addresses ethical considerations and whether their work was vetted by an ethics review (e.g., IRB approval). We expect authors to follow the rules of their host institutions around data collection and experiments with human subjects.
