Special Issue on Recent Advances in Connected and Autonomous Unmanned
Aerial/Ground Vehicles, Elsevier Computer Networks (Q1, IF:3.111)
Submission deadline December 15th, 2020
Connected and autonomous unmanned vehicles are considered as a promising
technology solution for numerous applications, ranging from civilian to
military settings, including shipment of goods, home package delivery, crop
monitoring, agricultural surveillance, and emergency rescue operations in
those regions where the access is difficult or dangerous for human beings.
Connected and autonomous unmanned vehicles comprise of unmanned
aerial/ground vehicles (UAVs/UGVs) that distinguish by means of different
characteristics. While UAVs can search a wide range of targets, their
height and speed results in a limited target positioning estimation; on the
other side, UGVs can have accurate locations of a target on the ground.
Also, UGVs move slowly and can be easily obscured by obstacles.
To overcome such limitations, UAVs and UGVs should work cooperatively and
collaborate with each other in *ad hoc *manner through Line-of-Sight (LoS)
links to exchange data packets. Of course, UAVs can also communicate with
fixed ground stations, with an air traffic controller, or through a
Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) link with a satellite-aided controller, generally
based on preloaded tasks. Besides the dissimilar communication
technologies, various problems appear in these inter-UAVs/UGVs
communications including energy management, lack of security and the
unreliability of wireless communication links, and handover from LoS to
NLoS, and vice versa.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
· Mobility, traffic models and network management for UAVs/UGVs
· Energy efficiency in UAVs/UGVs
· Inter-UAVs/UGVs and UAVs/UGVs-assisted routing
· Security, privacy, and trust in UAVs/UGVs
· UAVs/UGVs-assisted applications
· Spectrum management for UAVs/UGVs
· Mobile edge computing in UAVs/UGVs
· Beyond 5G technologies for UAVs/UGVs
· Performance, scalability, reliability and efficiency of Inter-
UAVs/UGVs and UAVs/UGVs-to-X communications
· Modeling and theoretical proofs of communications in UAVs/UGVs
· Inter-UAVs/UGVs communications over future internet architectures
· UAVs/UGVs clouds
· Testbeds and validation.

Dear colleagues,
You are cordially invited to submit your latest research results to the
IEEE Network Special Issue on Ubiquitous IoT with integrated Space, Air,
Ground, and Ocean Networks
As IoT applications and services reach almost every corner of our life,
there is a growing demand for global connections to anyone and anything.
Terrestrial networks alone cannot meet these needs, and thus there comes
the emerging concept of the integration of other dimensions, such as space,
airborne, and ocean communication infrastructures. However, the future
integrated platform is not a simple combination of heterogeneous network
segments and domains. This is expected to be the largest-ever geographical
scale, which makes it very challenging to manage the full potential of
heterogeneity and hybridity.
Recent breakthroughs in network communication technology (i.e., 5G and 6G)
and artificial intelligence provide us with the opportunity to overcome
those challenges. Modern microelectronics manufacturing can significantly
improve the computing capability per unit area of chips with reduced cost.
With the rapid progress of hardware production, SDN/NFV-based network
virtualization makes the coordination of heterogeneity and hybridity more
effective and efficient by unifying high-level behaviors. At the same time,
deep machine learning provides novel structural models to accumulate the
knowledge of designated networks and apply quality of experience.
The design of a practical ubiquitous IoT system, however, is still quite an
open challenge in the real-world. The difficulties mainly come from the
lack of experience and knowledge of operating and managing such an
integrated network with multi-dimensional heterogeneity. In addition, high
spatial-temporal dynamics are another hurdle, especially when considering
the super large geographical coverage and related enormous complexity.
Introducing holistic features into the ubiquitous IoT system design seems a
promising direction. However, there is still no clear roadmap to apply such
a multidisciplinary approach to gain system-level autonomy.
This Special Issue (SI) aims to foster the dissemination of high-quality
research with emerging ideas, approaches, theories, frameworks, and
practices to tackle the challenging issues related to Ubiquitous IoT with
integrated Space, Air, Ground, and Ocean Networks. Solutions are welcomed
to integrate industrial perspectives and academic cutting-edge models using
real-time data and scenarios. Possible topics of interest include but are
not limited to the following:

Apologies for cross-posting this invite:
Dear colleagues:
Call for Papers: 2021 WCNC Workshop on Intelligent Computing and Caching at
the Network Edge, 29 Mar-1 April 2021, Nanjing, China,
<http://users.jyu.fi/~zhchang/edge2020>
https://wcnc2021.ieee-wcnc.org/authors/call-workshop-papers#ws5
With the explosive growth of smart devices and the advent of many new
applications, mobile traffic volume has been growing exponentially. The
myriad technological advances proposed for the 5G networks still mostly
focus on capacity increase, which is constrained by the limited spectrum
resources as well as the diminishing profits for operators and, therefore,
will always lag behind the growth rate of mobile traffic. Therefore, novel
distributed architectures, which bring network functions (such as computing
and caching) and contents to the edge, emerges, i.e., mobile edge computing
and caching, to confront the aforementioned challenges in the network
development and many emerging applications, such as AR/VR, IoT, eHealth,
autonomous driving , gaming etc. However, on the way towards efficient and
intelligent network edge computing and caching, there are many open
problems ahead. From the computing part, how to flexibly utilize the
distributed computing resources at the network edge, such as mobile
computing or fog computing is of significance. Moreover, what to be
offloaded to the edge node and when to offload also call for research
attentions. From the caching part, what, when, where and how to cache the
contents to reduce the demand for radio resources are vital. Last but not
the most, how to efficiently integrate computing and caching at the edge
node and utilize the synergy of computing and caching also requires a
breakthrough. This workshop aims to consolidate the timely and solid works
of the current state-of-the art in terms of fundamental research ideas and
network engineering geared towards exploiting intelligent caching and
computing at the network edge. The topics of interests related to edge
caching and computing include (but are not limited to):
System modelling: Computation modelling, caching modelling, energy
consumption modelling etc.;
Enabling technologies: e.g., SDN, NFV, CRAN, D2D, cloud/fog computing and
networking, etc.;
Application areas: vehicular networking, IoT, smart grid etc;
Novel network architecture: convergence of computing, communications and
caching, content/information-centric network, cognitive computing and
networking, big data analytic;
Context-aware schemes: incentive mechanism for computing and caching,
pricing, game theoretic approach, network economic etc, caching placement
and delivery;
Mobility management for mobile edge computing and proactive caching;
Energy efficiency aspects: energy harvesting, energy storage, energy
transfer, etc;
Security and privacy issue;
Prototyping, test-beds and field trials.

Scope of the workshop
----------------------------------
Wireless Sensor, Robot and UAV networks are characterized by the
coordination and mobility of nodes that are able to accomplish distributed
sensing and actuation tasks. Leveraged by the control and mobility of
actors, the networking process and applications embrace a whole new set of
possibilities. Specialized networked systems, made of intelligent devices
(such as robots and UAVs), may deploy, repair and relocate sensors to
improve coverage, build routes and fix network partition to ensure data
communication, change network topology to shape routing patterns and
balance energy consumption, and to respond to reported events in a timely
and effective manner. Also, they might be able to integrate within existing
and upcoming mobile infrastructures (e.g. the 5G), by enabling the sensing
operations on complex and dynamic scenarios, and to process the data on the
edge or to offload them toward existing cloud services. The benefits are
limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, ground and aerial
robotic systems are in need of new networking techniques as well as of
novel cloud/edge architectures for data gathering and processing that might
unlock the potentials of such systems. To this purpose, WiSARN aims at
bringing together state-of-the-art contributions on the design,
specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols
for current and future applications of sensor robotic and aerial networks.
IEEE WiSARN 2021 will serve as incubator for scientific communities that
share a particular research agenda in the area of the workshop’s topics.
Moreover, it will provide its participants with opportunities to understand
the major technical and application challenges of UAV/Robot networking as
well as exchange and discuss scientific and engineering ideas related to
their architecture, protocol, algorithm, and application design.

-----------------------------------------------
The 4th International Workshop on Edge Systems, Analytics and Networking
(EdgeSys'21) co-located with EuroSys 2021
26 April, 2021 | Edinburgh, Scotland, UK
https://edge-sys.github.io/2021/
-----------------------------------------------
Given the growing demand for real-time gathering and processing of vast
amount of data from data-intensive services such as autonomous driving and
augmented reality (AR), we are witnessing a visible trend to push computing
and data analytics closer to the edge of networks for benefits in low
latency, reliability, throughput, security and privacy. Supported by
lightweight virtualization technologies such as Docker Containers and
Unikernels, the decentralized edge computing paradigm aims to offer
efficient access to various geographically distributed computing resources.
In this context, the EdgeSys workshop focuses on the confluence of edge
computing, decentralized communication and distributed computing. For
example, there are several industry-led edge computing and orchestration
platforms such as KubeEdge, Firecracker, and Azure Sphere. In the
decentralized communication space, systems such as Mastodon and Matrix have
been developed. There are also lots of academic research activities on
mobile data and computation offloading (e.g., Cloudlet, Talket, ThinkAir,
MAUI, and MADNet) and systems that combine decentralization and
computation/storage offloading together, such as IPFS. In addition, as data
analytics and machine learning are increasingly offered as a service, the
next phase of evolution is to extend the offerings beyond basic algorithms
and push the analytics closer to the edge where the data from users and
devices is first captured. In this regard, edge computing has the potential
to enable a new class of real-time data analytics platforms and services.
We expect such edge-driven data analytics will emerge and reshape the
existing cloud-based data processing pipelines. The knowledge from this new
edge pipeline can further power future cyber-physical and network services,
such as cognitive assistance and proactive accident prevention for
autonomous driving.
The 4th International Workshop on Edge Systems, Analytics and Networking
(EdgeSys'21), in conjunction with ACM EuroSys 2021, aims to bring together
system researchers, data scientists, engineers and practitioners to
identify open directions and discuss the latest research ideas and results
on edge systems, analytics and networking, especially those related to
novel and emerging technologies and use cases. The EdgeSys'21 workshop
focuses on systems, analytics and networking aspects, covering system
architecture, distributed ML algorithms, decentralized networking,
distributed consensus and ledger techniques, edge services and data analysis.
Over the past three years, EdgeSys has been gathering substantial community
contributions in edge computing domain - especially with high quality TPC,
keynotes, panel and technical papers from US, Europe, and Asia, including
Google, Amazon, Facebook, Microsoft Research, Intel, IBM, Nokia, Samsung,
Toyota, Telefónica, MIT, Berkeley, Columbia, Yale, UCLA, Cambridge,
Imperial, EPFL, TU Delft, MPI, TUM, Tsinghua, Peking and Fudan.
The topics include but are not limited to the following:
- System Architecture for Edge Computing
- Serverless and In-network Computing (P4)
- Edge Storage Systems
- Edge-driven Data Analytics
- Distributed Machine Learning for Edge Analytics and Services
- Edge Security and Privacy
