Paper submissions that emphasize on wireless infrastructures and mobility patterns for mobility support, new mobility protocols, service discovery, routing and location management, mobile network performance evaluation and modeling, security, architectural impacts and deployment considerations, are especially solicited. This year, MobiArch is co-located with Mobicom 2013. Following on from the success of ExtremeCom 2009 - The Midnight Sun Expedition in Laponia, Sweden, ExtremeCom 2010 - The Himalayan Expedition in Dharamsala, India, ExtremeCom 2011 - The Amazon Expedition in Manaus Brazil, ExtremeCom 2012 - The Alpine Expedition, we now offer ExtremeCom 2013 – The Volcanic Expedition in the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano region Iceland. The conference will start with 3-4 days of hiking in the volcanic landscape of Iceland, leading up to the Eyjafjallajökull Volcano. Along the way, participants will get to see and experience breathtaking views over a harsh landscape and understand the challenges involved in networking in this region. The immersion will not only give a better idea of both the technical and user requirements of such an harsh environment, but it will also give many opportunities for informal research discussions between the participants. Participants that have their own software for scenarios like this will also, to as great an extent as possible, be encouraged to test and demonstrate it within this environment. Upon reaching the end of the hike, there will be two days of paper presentations and demos. Focus will still be on informal research discussions, with the hope that the field experience will give participants the ability to discuss the topics in a new light. Submission Guidelines ------------------------------- Participants should submit 6 page papers about ideas and visions about the topics of the conference or demo proposals to be shown during the conference. Visionary and thought-provoking papers that are likely to generate much discussion during the conference are especially solicited. The aim of the conference is to maintain an informal environment, where new research ideas can be discussed and developed. We also hope to have a demo session where participants can show their implementations and systems. If you want to show a demo, please submit a 2 page demo proposal using the same submission system as for conference papers. Accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library. Topics of interest include the following. PAPER SUBMISSION There are TWO possible paper formats (detailed submission instructions will appear at the conference website): 1. REGULAR PAPERS: should not exceed 22 double-spaced pages including figures, tables and references. Additional details may be included in a clearly marked appendix of up to 8 pages, which, however, will be read at the discretion of the TPC. 2. SHORT PAPERS: should not exceed 3 double-column pages including figures, tables and references. SHORT PAPERS can either summarize very recent research results (including work in progress) or discuss results that do not require a full paper submission. A paper submitted as a REGULAR paper which is then rejected will not be considered for acceptance as a SHORT paper. Both the REGULAR and SHORT papers, if accepted, will be presented in the conference and published in the proceedings of the conference: 1. The authors of a REGULAR paper will be given the choice to have their paper published either in a special issue of Performance Evaluation (PEVA) or in a special issue of the ACM Performance Evaluation Review (PER). Please note that authors of REGULAR papers who choose to have their paper published in PEVA must submit their camera ready copy by the earlier deadline (see below). 2. SHORT papers will appear in the special issue of PER. These special issues of PEVA and PER will both appear in time for the conference. Authors of accepted papers that will be published in the ACM PER grant ACM permission to publish them in print and digital formats. Note that there are no copyright issues with PER, and thus authors retain the copyright of their work with complete freedom to submit their work elsewhere. REVIEW PROCESS All submissions will be reviewed using a DOUBLE-BLIND REVIEW process: the identity of authors and referees will not be revealed to each other. The first stage of the IoT evolution consisted in the deployment of RFID tags for facilitating routing, taking inventory and loss prevention of goods. After that we witnessed the first wave of RFID and sensor network integration toward vertical-market applications. Nowadays, new generations of RFID tags, in particular active RFID tags, often include built-in sensing capabilities. Whereas, applications based on sensor networks often require means for unique identification and discovery of objects, which are monitored by the sensor network. The convergence of sensing and identification technologies, together with communication and computation systems, enables us to gain impressive awareness about the state of the real world and will drastically change the way we interact with our environment. Urban planning, smart cities, intelligent shopping, smart meters, home automation, security and surveillance, industrial applications like process industry automation, supply chain, smart product management and agricultural applications are examples of potential applications for real-world systems. Even though the advent of the IPv6/6LoWPAN protocol suite solved several technical issues, many challenges are still open in the research and development communities concerning the choice of communication paradigms, architectures and technology. The main focus of this workshop is on technologies, applications and paradigms of the IoT that are already deployed or are under investigation and that belong to the second stage of the IoT evolution. The next step in the evolution of the IoT is its characterization as the underlying technological layer needed to shape and substantiate higher layer concepts such as semantic web and personalization. In fact, the IoT is the enabling technology to allow virtual and physical worlds to converge in what has already been defined as Web 3.0. If, currently, the IoT is the most suited companion of blogging, podcasting, tagging and social networking, we can imagine that its evolution will foster the rise of statistical, machine-constructed semantic tags and algorithms through the construction and exploitation of semantic databases empowered by distributed and cloud computing. The integration of the IoT with semantic databases, capable of delivering accurate information about the nature and the state of every physical object will introduce a staggering amount of new applications opportunities as well as potentially lead to an ultimate"Big brother scenario". Therefore, a particular interest will have to be given to appropriate security and privacy control mechanisms. The secondary focus of this workshop is on IoT vision and perspective towards Web 3.0 IoTIP features two tracks: -Current ideas: for technical works currently under investigation; - Future perspectives: for vision papers envisaging possible future technologies, paradigms and applications for IoT. It is aimed at bringing together researchers from academia and industry. Internet has crossed new frontiers with access getting faster and cheaper. New applications and services are being offered – and their impact omnipresent. The Internet Society’s recent global Internetsurvey reveals that the Internet should be considered as a basic human birthright. On one end, we have the developed world where access is getting faster and services being developed to utilize faster access. On the other end, there are people who do not have access to the Internet at all. Some may not be able to get it due to lack of infrastructure support (which accounts to the notion of digital divide problem faced by most people in developed countries). There have been signiﬁcant initiatives to solve the problem of affordable infrastructure. Crucially, most of these approaches address infrastructural barriers without addressing economic ones. Leaving connectivity for all to be governed by market economics is a major impediment to achieving the full benefits of the Internet, and that basic Internet access should be made freely available to all due to its societal benefits. The current Internet access model which is governed by market economics makes it practically infeasible for enabling universal access especially for those with socio-economic barriers. The value chains do not reflect the technical development – as made obvious by recent debates between operators and content providers. There are both research and policy challenges to the realization of a future Internet capability that will offer appropriate access to all parts of society. The current Internet architecture is progressively reaching a saturation point in meeting increasing user's expectations and behaviors as well as progressively showing inability to efficiently respond to new technological challenges (in terms of security, scalability, mobility, availability, and manageability) but also socio-economical challenges. This widening range of requirements imposed on the Internet architecture leads to a growing collection of solutions, which each in their own right address a set of requirement while driving forward the fragmentation that ultimately stands in the way of achieving the digital inclusion vision. In contrast to the way the current Internet has evolved, the development of the next generation network will demand both collaboration and a shared vision between researchers, corporations, community groupings and governments. There can be no single uniform solution that embraces all types of user and all locations. We need an infrastructure that combines different transmission technologies, while at the same time support an increasingly diverse range of Internet applications. The research community should also encourage, identify and architect new modes of access that could increase the efficiency of the usage of existing communication resources, enhance cooperation among operators, cooperation among end users, improving access/accounting on a per service basis rather than on a per volume basis, enable “sponsoring” of access to communication as such as well as to selected services.   This workshop will address the problem of digital exclusion due to both geographical and socio-economic disparity. We would like also to pay attention to specific types of exclusion – like temporal exclusion caused by catastrophes (in terms of an earthquake or tsunami) and malicious activities. In such situations, the poorest communities suffer the most. Technologies that require an infrastructure setup may sometimes be not feasible due to cost, accessibility or availability. Hence the use of alternate technologies that enable cooperative networking – e.g. multi-hop ad-hoc set-ups, or delay tolerant communication based approaches might save lives, and mitigate suffering of numerous victims. ACM LCDNet 2013 will address a range of research questions (feasibility, scalability, security, new privacy challenges, robustness, resource allocation, sustainability, performance etc.). We solicit contributions on state-of-the-art, results of ongoing research, open issues, trends and new ideas. We strongly encourage out-of-the box thinking and the workshop will have a dedicated session focusing on blue-skies research within the context of the workshop. Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to: 1. Innovations in wireless and satellite technologies that enable efficient low cost spectrum use 2. Characterising broadband performance 3. Advancements in Information-centric networking, delay-tolerant networking, cloud onloading/offloading to improve access and reduce average transmission cost per service access 4. A major challenge in the design of mission-oriented sensor networks arises in supporting dynamic topology and disruption-tolerant architecture, caused by mobility, which has significant impact on performance in terms of sensing coverage, network connectivity, and information quality. In such dynamic environments, sensors should self-organize and reason in a distributed manner about resource allocation, scheduling, forwarding, caching, and in-network storage to accomplish specific missions, while extending the operational network lifetime. Another major challenge lies in accommodating human input. Humans are the ultimate sensors. They are well-equipped to monitor and report situations that would be very difficult for machine sensors to understand. They also come with their own challenges including imperfect reliability, bias, and lack of predictability. The design of mission-oriented sensor networks, where humans and sensors collaborate, should account for trade-offs between several attributes such energy consumption, reliability, fault-tolerance, data collection latency, and quality of information (such as video resolution, picture quality, type of content, degree of redundancy, and level of summarization), and their impact on mission objectives. It should accommodate human-centric sensing modalities such as free-form text, pictures, sound, and video, and should include mechanisms to handle unpredictability, uncertainty, human error, and noise. Finally, it should account for ways to specify mission goals and requirements. ACM MiSeNet 2013 aims to provide a forum for participants from academia and industry to discuss topics in mission-oriented sensor network research and practice. ACM MiSeNet 2013 serves as incubator for scientific communities that share a particular research agenda in this area. It will provide opportunities to understand the major technical and application challenges as well as exchange ideas related to architecture, protocols, algorithms, and application design, at a stage before they have matured to warrant conference/journal publications. C A L L F O R P A P E R S ----------------------------- 3rd IEEE International Workshop on Convergence of Heterogeneous Wireless Systems (CON-WIRE 2013) (http://conwire.it.teithe.gr) June 4-7, 2013, Madrid, Spain organized in association with the 14th IEEE International Symposium on a World of Wireless, Mobile and Multimedia Networks (WoWMoM 2013) Overview Future Internet envisions the synergy among heterogeneous wireless communications will co-exist providing the end user the "flexibility and choice", to improve his/her quality of life. The integration of heterogeneous networks in multi-access and multi-operator environment is revolutionizing the ICT area, introducing new opportunities, better communication channels and an enhanced quality of provided applications and services. In this environment, a user is able to connect to a number of heterogeneous RATs (Radio Access Technologies), either covering the same, or complementing geographical areas. These networks can be macro-cellular, WLANs, femto-cellular or even ad-hoc. In this environment, seamless mobility is coupled according to user preferences, enabling mobile users to be "Always Best Connected" (ABC) so that Quality of Experience is optimized and maintained. Topics CONWIRE 2013 will collect latest research ideas and issues on the convergence among heterogeneous wireless systems in Future Internet. We solicit papers that cover a variety of topics including, but not limited to: * Wireless Network Architectures * Middleware for wireless converged networks. * Wireless Convergence in Future Internet Initiatives (e.g. FIRE, GENI etc) * IP-based Mobility Management * Efficient Handover Algorithms and RRM in heterogeneous wireless networks * Cross-Layer Schemes * Modeling, performance evaluation, simulation, and optimization techniques * Wireless network testbeds and applications * QoE/QoS in wireless converged networks Contribution format The authors are encouraged to submit full papers describing original, previously unpublished, complete research, not currently under review by another conference or journal, addressing state-of-the-art research and development. All submissions should be written in English with a maximum paper length of six (6) printed pages (10-point font) including figures.
