Recent Advances in technology has led to the development of small, intelligent, wearable sensors capable of remotely performing critical health monitoring tasks and then transmitting patient's data back to health care centers over wireless medium. Such wireless health monitoring platforms aim to continuously monitor mobile patients needing permanent surveillance. However, to set up such platforms several issues along the communication chain should be resolved. The acquisition of medical information via a set of wireless sensors embedded in the patient himself, the treatment and use of this information either by a local contractor equipment or offset after transfer in 3G and/or WiFi connection to a data server, the access to the collected data, ...etc. are some of the important challenges that we have to consider. Each level represents a fairly complex subsystem with a local hierarchy employed to ensure efficiency, portability, security, and reduced cost. MobileHealth'2013 workshop aims to provide a forum for the interaction of these multiple areas and would be an important chance to discuss and understand what aspects have to be considered to provide effective pervasive wireless healthcare systems. The workshop will include presentations of theoretical and experimental achievements, innovative wireless systems, prototyping efforts, case studies and advances in technology related to wireless healthcare networking and systems. This announcement solicits technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research, not currently under review by another conference or journal. Submissions should clearly identify how they relate to issues on wireless healthcare networking systems. Contributions describing an overall working system are particularly of interest. This allows for an unprecedented level of insight into a patient's health, with a similarly high level of fidelity of the collected data that in many cases is sufficient to allow biometric identification of an individual. With the advent of these new e-Health applications and their associated requirements and constraints, many vital topics of research need to be explored to provide robustness, security, responsiveness, and longevity of the wireless network and patient health information. It is important to collect correct raw data in an efficient way; but more important is to analyze and mine the raw data to abstract more valuable information such as correlations among things and services to provide web of things or Internet of services. However many challenges and problems remain unsolved as of now or not fully addressed due to the unique features of IoT systems. First, IoT needs an appropriate architecture such as a service-oriented, a content-centric, or a thing-centric architecture. Second, it is truly challenging to design efficient protocols to cater for diverse IoT devices, sensors and services. The goal of this special issue of IEEE Sensors Journal is to feature latest advances and directions in IoT architecture, protocols and services for typical IoT use cases (such as smart grid, connected cars, smart cities, etc), their performance, impact, demands and implications on future Internet design. This emerging field of technology aims to improve safety of passengers and traffic flow, reduces pollution to the environment and enables in-vehicle entertainment applications. The safety-related applications could reduce accidents by providing drivers with traffic information such as collision avoidance, traffic flow alarms and road surface conditions. Moreover, the passengers could exploit an available infrastructure in order to connect to the internet for infomobility and entertainment applications. The increasing necessity of this network is an impetus for leading car manufacturers, research communities and governments to increase their efforts toward creating a standardized platform for vehicular communications. However, VANET’s unique characteristics and special requirements excite new challenges to the research community. To address these challenges in both safety- and comfort-oriented applications, there is a pressing need to develop new protocols and algorithms for channel characterization and modeling, Medium Access Control (MAC), obstacle modeling, adaptive geographical routing to sparse and dense traffic conditions. This special issue aims to theme innovative research achievements in the field of vehicular networks and communications. We are seeking original and unpublished papers. Many applications that could only have been dreamed of, have now become a reality due to the high computing resources, display and networking capabilities of smartphones. With applications ranging from productivity, entertainment, enterprise, social networking, communications and mixed reality, the smartphone is the "swiss army knife" of it all. However, there are still many untapped elements and unlimited possibilities that smartphones can provide that have not been explored much in detail. In this workshop, we will explore how smartphones can help enable cyber-physical computing, that bridges the gap between the physical and the virtual world and also enable social computing by creating mobile social networks, social networks that are built around the interactions of mobile phones. The PhoneCom 2013 workshop is an international forum for researchers and practitioners to present innovative ideas and results on all aspects of smartphone computing, including theoretical foundations, techniques and methods, tools and platforms, prototypes, evaluation, practical implementations and applications. The workshop aims to attract and bring together mobile computing, cyber-physical computing, ubiquitous computing, social computing, wireless networking and communications researchers along with user interface designers and practitioners with diverse backgrounds. The workshop will be a full day workshop. Besides research paper presentations, the workshop will feature an Invited Talk (keynote) and a Panel Discussion session. After the initial hype, at the current stage, several ongoing research efforts are focusing on the several open management aspects of the Cloud, such as interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and confidentiality/auditability, with the final goal to make Cloud technologies and services more mature so to boost and to facilitate a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. Despite the several recent efforts on Cloud systems, it is still unclear whether current solutions are able to withstand the abrupt and unpredictably changes imposed by the emergent Cloud application scenarios, where services and the whole software stacks (from the kernel upward) have to scale up and down fast by exploiting highly distributed and heterogeneous virtualized resources. The ambition and mission of MoCS 2013 is to put on the foreground all above issues, and to bring together different ongoing research efforts on the management of Cloud systems. This year, special focus will be on the challenging management issues related to the delivery of efficient Green solutions for the processing of real-world Big Data knowledge base and streams over the Cloud. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following: * Novel adaptive management solutions for scalable, maintainable, cost-effective Cloud provision, at all software stack layers; * New models and paradigms for the management of Cloud services at the host level and within/between data centres (intra-/inter-domain); * Analytical and simulation models and tools to measure systems ability to scale and to achieve relevant energy savings; * New methods and tools able to identify and enforce optimal trade-offs between performance, energy consumption, safety, and security; * Emerging standards for interoperability (resource virtualization, specific computing interfaces, etc.), also between public and private Clouds; * Experimentation testbeds, field trials and empirical evaluations, and measurement studies.
