5th edition of the Workshop on Smart Environments and Ambient
Intelligence (SENAmI 2013)
Personalization and Situation Awareness in Smart Environments
Submission deadline: October 30 2012
-------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS -----------------
Co-located with IEEE PerCom, March 18-22 2013, San Diego, EE.UU.

* MOTIVATION AND TOPICS
A smart environment is a digitally augmented physical world where
pervasively and non-invasively instrumented objects and spaces are
intelligently perceptive and responsive to the state of the
environment and its inhabitants. On top of the smart infrastructure,
different computing paradigms make possible to extract knowledge from
non-intrusively acquired data. User-centric paradigms aim at learning
about the users to adapt services and applications to their
preferences and needs. In a complementary way, environment-centric
paradigms pursue the global understanding and optimization of the
smart space performance through situation analysis techniques.
The fifth edition of SENAmI aims at bringing together researchers from
academia and industry to present and discuss recent trends and
advances in enabling technologies to deliver personalized applications
and explore situation awareness in smart environments. Works on
innovation at the service layer (applications and user experience) are
also encouraged.
The workshop welcomes papers on:
- Methodologies and tools for end-user creation of smart environments.
- Novel proposals on architectures and middleware for data processing
and service delivery in smart environments.
- Data fusion and reasoning for situation awareness.
- Machine learning techniques for personalization.
- Sensors, actuators and novel concepts for personalization.
- Novel concepts of services and applications in the smart city (e.g.
energy, health, assisted living, tourism, etc.).
- Technology for mobile sensing: social and participatory approaches.
- Test-beds and real-world deployments and user evaluation of smart
services.
* SUBMISSION AND PROCEEDINGS

CFP: Special Issue on Research Advances and Standardization Activities in WLANs (Elsevier Com. Communications)
by Periklis Chatzimisios 22 Aug '12
by Periklis Chatzimisios 22 Aug '12
22 Aug '12
Special Issue on Research Advances and Standardization Activities in WLANs
Computer Communications
http://www.journals.elsevier.com/computer-communications/call-for-papers/re…
Scope
A new generation of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) is going to
make its appearance in the upcoming years, with the IEEE 802.11aa
(Robust Audio Video Transport Streaming), IEEE 802.11ac (Very-high
throughput < 6GHz), IEEE 802.11af (TV White Spaces) and IEEE 802.11ad
(Very-high throughput ~60 GHz), as examples of the most expected ones.
Nevertheless, all next-generation standards will consider some of the
most significant advances on the wireless communication and networking
area in the last decade, developed by a highly active community, in both
academia and industry.
This special issue requests papers that advance the state-of-the-art of
the recent and on-going IEEE 802.11 standards (i.e., IEEE 802.11p, IEEE
802.11s, IEEE 802.11aa, IEEE 802.11ac, IEEE 802.11ad, IEEE 802.11ae,
IEEE 802.11ah, IEEE 802.11af, IEEE 802.11ai, etc.), as well as present
mechanisms and solutions, from MAC or above layers, that could be
readily transferred to the not-yet finished standards or their future
amendments. Please, note that pure PHY-layer papers are outside the
scope of this Special Issue, although cross-layer approaches are welcome.
In addition, there is special interest in those papers that provide new
theoretical and/or experimental insights on the performance of the new
and on-going IEEE 802.11 standards in real application scenarios, as
well as propose optimal parameter configurations to make them work as
much efficiently as possible. Papers proposing, evaluating and comparing
disruptive approaches to the path followed by the IEEE 802.11 standards
are also very much appreciated.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Coexistence mechanisms between IEEE 802.11 and other wireless networks
in unlicensed bands.
- Inter-Access point cooperative mechanisms.
- Service discovery in WLANs.
- Dynamic channel access mechanisms, including cognitive radio
techniques and channel bonding strategies.
- Link-layer mechanisms to efficiently operate in the new spectrum bands
(below 1 GHz, TV White Spaces, 60 GHz band, etc.).
- Multiple packet transmission and reception techniques.
- Packet aggregation mechanisms.
- Energy efficient link-layer protocols for multi-service WLANs with
heterogeneous QoS requirements.
- Cross-layer Network/MAC techniques for multi-hop networking and
cooperative relays.
- Advanced relaying strategies for MIMO multicell systems.
- Mobility support, vehicular networks and networks of mobile objects.
- Multimedia home networking, HDTV and video distribution.
- Integration of home and city Smart Grids (M2M communications) in WLANs.

Call for Papers for
Springer Mobile Networks and Applications Special Issue on
“Wireless Technology for Pervasive Healthcare”
Since the start of this new century, the proportion of seniors has been
increasing more rapidly than other age groups while the newborn rate is
steadily decreasing. This global aging problem demands an increased focus
on preparing pervasive healthcare systems and applications deployed around
users and capable of remotely caring for them and improving their health
and well-being anywhere anytime. These systems and applications require a
sophisticated integration of microcircuit, medical sensing, and wireless
and mobile technologies. They largely benefit users by decreasing the
dependability on special caregivers and eventually reducing healthcare
expenses through a more efficient use of healthcare resources and an
earlier detection of life-threatening emergency situations. However, the
realization of pervasive healthcare sets some additional critical
requirements, e.g. realtimeness and fault-tolerance, and reliability,
security and efficiency challenges compared with traditional hospital-based
systems. Exploitation of Information and Communications Technologies as
well as Networking and Sensors Technologies will enable cost-effective and
efficient healthcare delivery, capable to deal with physical and logical
mobility of patients and devices.
The focus of this call is on theory and applications of Wireless
Technologies towards the definition of the Next Generation Pervasive
Healthcare. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited. Possible
topics of interest include, but are certainly not limited to the following:
* Wireless body area networks for remote healthcare monitoring
* Energy efficient sensing and communication for pervasive healthcare
* Reliable and fault-tolerant communications in pervasive healthcare
* Network protocols design and analysis for pervasive healthcare
* Data management and resource sharing for pervasive healthcare
* Mobile, social, context-aware computing for pervasive healthcare
* Integration of different wireless technologies for pervasive healthcare
* Remote diagnosis and patient management for pervasive healthcare
* Distributed multimedia services for pervasive healthcare
* Emergency detection and response for pervasive healthcare
* Trust, security, privacy, and QoS provisioning for pervasive healthcare
* System architectures, applications & prototypes for pervasive healthcare

The 14th Annual International Workshop on Mobile Computing
Systems and Applications (ACM HotMobile 2013)
Sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
26-27 February, 2013
Jekyll Island, GA, USA
http://www.hotmobile.org/2013/
ACM HotMobile 2013, the 14th International Workshop on Mobile Computing
Systems and Applications continues the series of highly selective,
interactive
workshops focused on mobile applications, systems, and environments, as well
as their underlying state-of-the-art technologies. HotMobile's small
workshop
format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing new directions or
controversial approaches.
We solicit submissions of position papers that focus primarily on
applications
and systems and that propose new directions of research, advocate non-
traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate controversy and
discussion. We particularly look for position papers containing highly
original ideas in the following topic areas, although papers describing
other
challenges unique to or exacerbated by mobility are also welcome:
* Operating system and distributed system support for mobile computing
* Coordination, aggregation, and spontaneous interaction of mobile devices
* Novel applications, environments, and devices supporting mobility
* HCI issues related to mobile computing
* Security and privacy of mobile computing
* Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility
Submissions describing new lower-level technologies are welcome if they
focus on how the technology is being used or integrated into a system or
application.
ACM HotMobile 2013 will be a highly interactive workshop. Submissions will
be judged based upon originality, technical merit, topical relevance, and
likelihood of leading to insightful discussion at the workshop. Presentation
at HotMobile is a good way to get early feedback on research ideas that are
a year or more from submission as a full conference paper to the ACM MobiSys
conference or other high-quality conferences. Submitting a full-length paper
on the same topic to MobiSys in less than a year is unlikely to involve a
sufficient increment of work and maturity of ideas.
As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may
not be simultaneously under submission at another venue. Papers accompanied
by nondisclosure agreement forms are not acceptable and will be returned to
the author(s) unread. As customary with the scientific peer review process,
submissions will be handled as confidential material during the review.
Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format,
including all references, figures and tables. Papers should use the standard
ACM template, available at:
http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates
For more submission guidelines, please visit the conference website.

About IEEE CCNC '13
IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference, sponsored by
IEEE Communications Society,
is a major annual international conference organized with the
objective of bringing together researchers, developers, and
practitioners from academia and industry working in all areas of
consumer communications and networking. IEEE CCNC was organized
specifically to help the consumer electronics industry drive the
advance of the numerous wireless and wireline communications
technologies that will one day provide on-demand access to both
entertainment and information anytime, anywhere, regardless of time or
location. This includes a detailed analysis of nearly every
technological area ranging from cognitive and peer-to-peer networking
to the designer services and tools used to ensure ease-of-use,
security and stunning interactivity.
Overview (IoTCoMM)
Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Wireless Sensor Network
(WSNs) are considered to be the main elements of pervasive computing
and have gathered the interest of the research community in the past
few years. Such technologies empower computers to perceive the world
for themselves leading the way to the new Internet of Things (IoT).
This interlinking of physical world and cyberspace foreshadows an
exciting endeavor that is highly attractive to researchers,
corporations, and individuals. IoT promises to create a global network
of physical objects every bit as pervasive and ubiquitous as the
worldwide web itself. Some are already describing it as either the
ultimate convenience or the ultimate disaster revolving around our
daily privacy. What does this mean to those of us who will be
encountering IoT? How would IoT transform our lives? And what are the
design and deployment challenges associated with such a network?
Topics
The workshop solicits papers and demos relating to the following topics:
IoT Hardware Design
-- Hardware aspects of RFID, WSN & WMSN sensor design
-- Sensor Actuation & Coordination
-- CMOS Camera Design, Integration of Smart Cameras & Others
IoT Protocol Design
-- Energy-aware communication protocols / Cross-layer optimization /
Congestion Control & Reliability
-- Collaborative signal processing / Quality-of-Service
-- MAC & Transport Protocols / Routing Protocols & Energy Efficiency /
Simulation tools, OSs and middleware
IoT Applications
-- Smart Housing & Smart Retail
-- Vehicular Traffic Congestion Management
-- Healthcare /Petroleum / Supply Chain
-- Other novel applications
Submissions must present original results.
Selected papers will be forward-looking, describe their relationship
to existing work, and have impact and implications for ongoing or
future research.
Workshop Chair
Mohamed K. Watfa, Associate Professor, University of Wollongong in
Dubai, UAE
Program Committee
Berk Canberk, Istanbul Technical University, Turkey
Ashit Talukder, University of Southern California, USA

The doctoral colloquium at NetSys 2013 follows
the format of similar events at international
conferences such as PerCom, UbiComp, and Pervasive.
The aim is twofold. First, it should provide PhD
students in an early phase of their career with
the opportunity to discuss these with experts and
gain general feedback as well as specific comments
on their proposal. Second, this is an excellent
opportunity for a young researcher to start a
personal network with other PhD students as
well as with already established experts.
Format
------
The aim of the doctoral colloquium is to discuss research
ideas and PhD projects at different - typically - early
stages. The colloquium aims at a friendly atmosphere which
shall inspire the participants and put them - and their
research - in the focus. A panel of experts will discuss
the research based on a short presentation. Interactivity
and discussion are the the goal.
In addition to the colloquium a presentation of all participants
at the main conference will take place as a poster session.
A brief introduction of the topics (One-Minute-Madness)
is used to attract conference participants.
Submissions
-----------
Prospective participants are required to submit three different
documents:
at the point of submission:
1. Research Statement: a two-page abstract that sketches the
research proposal of the PhD student, the contribution to
knowledge and how the research will advance the state of the art.
2. Curriculum Vitae: a one brief CV that lists the education,
research interests and - if available - publications.
at the point of acceptance:
3. a poster that will be presented at the conference
