Conf. on Software Engineering (ICSE) Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a fundamental building-block of the upcoming Internet of Things, as they enable seamless integration of the digital and physical worlds. Despite the interest raised by this decade-old research topic, the development of WSN software is still carried out in a rather primitive fashion, by building software directly atop the operating system and by relying on the individual, hard-earned programming skills. WSN developers must face not only the functional application requirements but also a number of challenging, non-functional requirements and constraints resulting from scarce re- sources. The heterogeneity of network nodes, the unpredictable envi- ronmental influences, and the large size of the network further add to the difficulties. In the WSN community there is a growing awareness of the need for methodologies, techniques, and abstractions that simplify the develop- ment task and increase the confidence in the correctness and perfor- mance of the resulting software. Software engineering (SE) support is therefore sought, not only to ease the development task but also to make it more reliable, dependable, and repeatable. Nevertheless, this topic has received so far very little attention by the SE community. The aim of SESENA11 is to attract researchers belonging to both the SE and WSN communities, not only to exchange their recent research re- sults on the topic, but also to stimulate discussion about the core open problems and to define a shared research agenda. The workshop welcomes both research contributions and position statements. The for- mer will allow discussing in technical depth novel results with an au- dience composed of both SE and WSN researchers. The latter will pro- vide the opportunity for presenting open problems, provocative views, or previously-unexplored ideas in an informal fashion. SESENA11 will also include a "speakers' corner" session composed by impromptu pre- sentations where any of the attendees (including those without an ac- cepted paper) will be given a chance to present their own views in very short statements (e.g., 2-4 minutes). TOPICS OF INTEREST The workshop solicits contributions including, but not limited to, the following aspects of SE for sensor networks: * (macro)programming languages and compilers; * testing and debugging; * formal verification and model checking; * model-driven approaches; * interfacing WSNs and business software SUBMISSIONS Prospective participants are invited to submit research or position papers containing original unpublished material describing ongoing work and new ideas, mature research results, or experience reports. Submissions must conform to the ICSE submission format and rules (see http://2011.icse-conferences.org/content/submission-guidelines). Re- search papers may not exceed 6 pages, position papers must be limited to 2 pages. This forms a framework on harmonization of results obtained separately in different areas of network research like network performance evaluation, architecture and protocol design, and low layer network design. Additionally, mobile devices often lack powerful user interfaces to support classical authentication methods. The general objective for current activity recognition systems is to analyze continuous sensor data streams and to detect and discriminate certain activities of interest, and to reject portions of sensor data that cover unknown or idle activities. A wealth of algorithmic approaches to activity recognition have been developed that employ state-of- the-art signal processing and machine learning techniques. Reviewing the current literature in the field may give the impression that the general problem of activity recognition has almost been solved. State-of-the-art AR systems achieve recognition rates of well beyond 80 or 90 percent across tasks. This opens up the question which other - more challenging - activity recognition problems should be addressed in the future. More generally speaking, this also relates to the question how a future AR system should look like. What will be the challenges of AR that go beyond the aforementioned classification approach and could, for example, comprise a quantitative measure of the quality of performing an activity rather than only detecting an activity? IWFAR 2011, a satellite workshop of Pervasive 2011, is supposed to focus on new "frontiers in activity recognition using pervasive sensing" in the aforementioned sense. We want to stimulate and explore the creativity of the community regarding new applications and approaches to AR. The latter could comprise radically new procedures like, for example, biologically inspired AR methods or rigorously exploiting general time-series analysis approaches (e.g. from the financial domain). Recent publications in the AR community represent quite promising starting points (cf. e.g. time-delay embedding for the analysis of repetitive activity patterns, which was inspired by the physics of complex systems). IWFAR 2011 provides a forum for researchers and practitioners to gather and present new ideas, and discuss aspects related to applications and techniques that go beyond classic activity recognition. Covering a more or less "emerging" field, expected contributions would also cover more speculative ideas that are too specific for the broader audience of the main conference. This convergence of physical computing devices (wireless sensor networks, mobile phones, embedded computers, etc.) and the Internet provides new design opportunities and challenges, as digital communication networks will soon not only contain virtual data (images, text, etc.), but also real objects. Programming mobile and pervasive applications is more than than building client-server or peer-peer systems with mobility, and it is more than providing usable interfaces for mobile devices that may interact with the surrounding context. It includes aspects such as disconnected and low-attention working, spontaneous collaboration, evolving and uncertain security regimes, and integration into services and workflows hosted on the internet. In the past, efforts have focused on the form of human-device interfaces that can be built using mobile and distributed computing tools, or on human computer interface design based on, for example, the limited screen resolution and real estate provided by a smartphone. This topic is of particular interest at this time because advertising is considered by multiple researchers as one main business models for pervasive computing and has recently been called the "Killer application for the 21st century". The market is rapidly growing, and major companies (Apple iAd, JCDecaux, Wall, ClearChannel, Google etc.) are invested in pervasive advertising projects. The main hinderance today is that advertisers lack the technological skills, and pervasive computing researchers and practitioners lack the advertising knowledge and experience. Furthermore, these groups rarely talk to each other. Based on the success of previous workshops we envision to continue and further establish the workshop series as a prime venue bringing together people from academia and practice, hence driving forward research in the field of Pervasive Advertising. We believe that our research community has a responsibility to contribute towards a joint understanding of how pervasive advertising of the future will look like. While WSNs have been a subject of intensive research for about a decade, most research activities to date focused on sensor nodes typically deployed in static, pre-determined locations with sensor readings taken at regular intervals and multi-hopped to a static sink for subsequent storage and analysis. The next evolutionary step for sensor networks is to handle mobility in all its forms. That is, mobility of sinks, mobility of sensors and actuators as well as mobility of code (i.e. applications). The mobility extension represents a more recent research subject in sensor networking; mobility opens up a whole new level of research opportunities and challenges in WSNs, and significantly expands the types of applications for which WSNs can be used. This workshop aims to identifying the benefits and challenges from such a step and outline the state of the art in this particularly promising research area. (Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message) C A L L F O R P A P E R S ============================= Workshop on Management of Cloud Systems (MoCS 2011) (http://mocs.deis.unibo.it) June 28th, 2011 Kerkyra (Corfu), Greece organized in association with the Fifteenth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications (ISCC 2011) (http://www.ieee-iscc.org/2011) Sponsored by (pending approval) IEEE Computer Society and IEEE Communications Society Endorsed by the IEEE Technical Committee on Communications Systems Integration and Modeling (CSIM) The vision of Cloud computing is becoming a reality thanks to the recent advances in several significant computer and communications research areas, spanning from grid/virtualization/utility computing to Web 2.0 and Service Oriented Computing (SOC). After the initial hype, at the current stage, several ongoing research efforts are focusing on the several open management aspects of the Cloud, such as interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and confidentiality/auditability, with the final goal to make Cloud technologies and services more mature so to boost and to facilitate a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. Despite the several recent efforts on Cloud systems, it is still unclear whether current solutions are able to withstand the abrupt and unpredictably changes imposed by the emergent Cloud application scenarios, where services and the whole software stacks (from the kernel upward) have to scale up and down fast by exploiting highly distributed and heterogeneous virtualized resources. The ambition and mission of MoCS 2011 is to put on the foreground all above issues, and to bring together different ongoing research efforts on the management of Cloud systems. This year, special focus will be on the challenging management issues related to the delivery of efficient Green computing solutions over the Cloud. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following: * Novel adaptive management solutions for scalable, maintainable, cost-effective Cloud provision, at all software stack layers; * New models and paradigms for the management of Cloud services at the host level and within/between data centres (intra-/inter-domain); * Analytical and simulation models and tools to measure systems ability to scale and to achieve relevant energy savings; * New methods and tools able to identify and enforce optimal trade- offs between performance, energy consumption, safety, and security; * Emerging standards for interoperability (resource virtualization, specific computing interfaces, etc.), also between public and private Clouds; * Experimentation testbeds, field trials and empirical evaluations, and measurement studies. Mobile applications are rapidly developing and becoming more and more important. They consist of software that runs on a smart phone or tablet and perform certain tasks for the user of the cellular phone. In this way, the user can use the application in its personal situation and can take advantage of the mobile phone’s capabilities, such as the camera, positioning and navigation or network access. Now, mobile devices are becoming even smarter. They are computer networked and user reconfigurable. A device can be seen as part of a cloud or operate autonomously. It is a device, that consists of CPU, storage and network access and has the intelligence to perform services both reactive and proactive. It can also be seen as a part of a smart environment, i.e. interact with a physical world consisting of sensors and actuators, displays and computational elementsthat are connected through a continuous network. Currently, smartphones with more advanced computing capabilities and connectivity than classic mobile phones offer more functionalities and run smarter applications. Mobile platforms comprise an increasing number of different sensors such as photosensors, accelerometers, gyroscopes etc, thus allowing sophisticated contextualized applications. In addition, users as well as developers benefit from an increasing number of market places and online stores for mobile applications. The concept of a mobile "app" that can be purchased via centralized hubs is already very common among the growing number of users.
