This comprises overviews of selected testbed expert groups as well as current and future national and international collaborative projects. We would like to stimulate discussions on future Internet applications, future wireline and wireless Internet architectures, and experimental facilities. We seek for further technical presentations addressing research issues for the future Internet. These networks consist of a large number of typically small devices, each incorporating sensing, processing, and wireless communications capabilities. Their use has penetrated a plethora of application domains from industrial and building automation, to environmental, wildlife, and health monitoring. The control and systems community has played an important role in the maturing of WSNs addressing issues related to their fundamental limits and designing strategies to optimize and control their operation so as to improve performance. Performance encompasses a variety of metrics that may vary with the application but in all cases includes the network's energy use which determines its usable lifetime. As WSN nodes are powered by small batteries, energy conservation has become a very important concern. Equally importantly, the existence of WSNs has provided a major application context to theoretical contributions of the control community including cooperative and distributed control, event-based monitoring, discrete-event systems, and consensus algorithms. What is emerging as the next step in the WSN evolution is their use not only in monitoring but also in controlling a physical system. To that end, some of the WSN nodes have to be augmented by integrating actuators. Actuators can be simple devices programmed to take immediate, one-shot, action in response to sensory input, or they can be more sophisticated entities (like robots) that interact with their environment in more complex ways. The resulting augmented version of WSNs is commonly referred to as Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (WSANs). WSANs are therefore heterogeneous networks that comprise of networked sensor and actuator nodes that communicate among each other using wireless links to perform distributed sensing and actuation tasks. WSANs can be used to close loops over the network in a variety of applications, such as, environmental control, event detection and suppression, home automation, manufacturing, microclimate control, surveillance etc. The control community has recently made important contributions in understanding control over communication channels but this work has, for the most part, abstracted the communication medium. A new challenge is to consider a WSAN as the communications channel over which we seek to close control loops. The topics relevant to this special issue include but are not limited to: < Autonomous sensor networks < Co-design of communication protocols and control strategies < Architectural, modeling and simulation of WSANs < Autonomic and self-organizing coordination and communication < Sensor-actuator and actuator-actuator coordination < Distributed control in sensor-actuator networks < Biologically inspired communication in WSANs < Applications and prototypes. *Submission Details:* All papers submitted to the special issue will be subject to peer review in accordance with the established practices of the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control. However, the architecture has been losing its original simplicity and transparency as new classes of applications, business models, security mechanisms, scalability enablers and operational and management requirements have given rise to point solutions that extend the architecture without regard to its original design principles. Consequently, the research community has been actively looking for new approaches to evolve or supersede the Internet architecture. Substantial academic efforts in Europe, the Americas and Asia, as well as within the vendor and network operator communities have resulted in promising proposals to address the limitations of the current Internet architecture. This special issue of the Computer Networks Journal solicits original, high-quality papers that present, analyze and discuss revolutionary "clean slate" or evolutionary "dirty slate" Internet architectures, "future-proofing" improvements to current Internet protocols, especially at the internetworking, routing, transport and application layers, or new internetworking components that integrate into the existing architecture. Related topics, such as measurement studies or mathematical models that analyze and quantify Internet scalability issues, studies into architectural design principles that enable evolution, interworking technologies with the existing Internet, and others are also within the scope of the special issue. About the Computer Networks Journal Computer Networks is a scientific journal of computer and telecommunications networking published by Elsevier. Computer Networks is an international, archival journal providing a publication vehicle for complete coverage of all topics of interest to those involved in the computer communications networking area. The audience includes researchers, managers and operators of networks as well as designers and implementors. Submission Format Submissions should be clearly organized, written in excellent English and must describe original, complete research not published or currently under review by other journals or conferences. Substantially enhanced and extended versions of quality papers presented at conferences or workshops may be submitted with the differences to the previous version clearly described. All submissions will be peer reviewed. The guest editors reserve the right to reject submissions that are clearly out of scope or well below the expected quality for this special journal issue without further review. Submission Guidelines Authors must prepare and format their submissions according to the "Guide for Authors" available from http://ees.elsevier.com/comnet/ and submit them online at the same URL, choosing "SI-Future Internet" as the article type. Submissions must be in single-column format, double-spaced, use a font size of at least 11 points, and should not exceed 25 pages including all figures and references.
