CALL FOR PAPERS
COMPUTER NETWORKS JOURNAL
SPECIAL ISSUE ON
WIRELESS FOR THE FUTURE INTERNET
The Internet has grown from being a network linking universities and
research institutions to an
infrastructure that supports the economy and society in general. But the
Internet, as originally
designed, may not have the capabilities to support the sheer number of
new usage patterns and
requirements.
Around one billion people currently use the Internet and they will soon
be joined by several billion
mobile online devices. There will also be a shift from developed to
developing countries. A fully
pervasive anytime/anywhere and secure wireless Internet infrastructure
will support and drive this
trend.
Therefore, the so called Future Internet (FI) needs to be able to match
this growing demand and this
will entail more than merely patching or upgrading the underlying
network and service
infrastructure. A profound change is required, leading to a range of
technical, financial, society
and governance challenges.
There appears to be a common understanding that the FI will be at the
heart of the future networked
society. However, there is no agreed definition as to what a FI should
cover in terms of research
and non research topics. As well as being an Internet of Networks, FI is
perceived of as being an
Internet of Services and an Internet of Things that will integrate
common objects into our lives. It
is also regarding as being an Internet of Contents & Knowledge and an
Internet of People. Developing
the FI involves huge challenges regarding usability, reliability,
mobility, scalability,
interoperability, user acceptability, and trust and confidence. In
addition, Internet governance,
intellectual property, and education – i.e. non-technical aspects - also
need to be addressed.
Early research work on FI focussed above all on networking issues, and
on the need to support a
range of innovative applications with enhanced management capabilities
and a great capacity to deal
with increased security issues. Alongside this, the FI is being driven
by a vast set of new
application requirements. This means that the FI should be approached in
a holistic manner, beyond
simply a "network" perspective.
This special issue aims to intercept the strategies and trends related
to the wireless segment of
the development of the FI and to present new ideas and concepts in this
area. These trends have a
significant impact on the underlying network and service technologies
and consequently drive
research and technology requirements towards a Future Internet, hence
continuing to shape future
actions at a world level in a domain that has now become global.
Original papers are called for on advanced research topics including,
but not restricted to:
- Delay Tolerant and Opportunistic Networks
- Wireless Enabled Context Awareness in Networks
- Network Coding as an Alternative to TCP and as Part of Network
Protocols or Crosslayer Design
- Support for Cognitive Radio Technology
- Neighborhood and Local Resource Discovery
- Cross-Layer Protocol Support
- Wireless Body Area Networks and Wireless Sensor Networks
- Spontaneous Information Exchange Among Mobile Devices
- “Infrastructure Free” Communications and Self-organization
- Greening of the Wireless Access
- Wireless Based P2P Networks
- Socio-economic and Legal Aspects of Wireless Based Services
- Wireless of Future Internet Experimental Test-beds
Note that the above topics should be developed in terms of a Future
Internet perspective and not as
isolated topics.
Authors should follow the Computer Networks (Elsevier) manuscript format
described at
http://www.elsevier.com/locate/comnet.
IMPORTANT DATES
To speed up the review process, authors are requested to submit a
one-page abstract which should
clearly identify the key contribution of the work that will be presented
in the full paper. The
abstract should succinctly describe the particular problem being
addressed, and how it will impact
on the Future Internet. The Guest Editors will select the most
interesting and thought-provoking
papers.
Abstract Submission Deadline: 1 July, 2009
Abstract Acceptance Notification: 10 July, 2009
Submission Deadline for the full paper: 15 September, 2009 Notification
of Acceptance: 30 November,
2009 Submission of Revised Version: 30 January, 2010 Publication of the
Special Issue: Second Half
2010
The one page abstract, in pdf format, should be sent as attachment in a
message addressed to

Subject and Purpose of the Workshop
-----------------------------------
This workshop covers comprehensively the algorithmic issues in the hot area
of ad hoc and sensor networking. In particular, sensor networks are
currently recognized as one of the priority research areas and research
activities are booming recently.
The workshop scope includes network layer problems like data communication
(routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and
topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor
elimination, etc.). The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or
greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global
information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple
local node behavior achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols
provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an
arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan. Sensor and
rooftop/mesh networks, for instance, have hundreds or thousands of nodes.
The objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research
results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area
of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques
Topics of Interest
------------------
We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished contributions
addressing various aspects of ad hoc networking. Possible topics of interest
include, but are not limited to:
* Medium access control for ad hoc networks
* Analytical, mobility and validation models for ad hoc networks
* Hybrid networks and wireless Internet
* Security in ad hoc networks
* Data management, query processing, and data delivery in sensor networks
* Unicast routing, multicasting, and broadcasting in ad hoc networks
* Geocasting and anycasting in ad hoc networks
* Energy-efficient and bandwidth-efficient protocols for ad hoc networks
* Quality of service in medium access control and routing
* Topology construction and maintenance in ad hoc networks
* Neighborhood discovery and mobility management in ad hoc networks
* Localized protocols for duty-cycled sensor networks
* Auto-configuration and network formation protocols and algorithms
* Relative positioning algorithms
* Lower bounds on information exchange required for localized solutions
* Network graph properties supporting localized protocols
* Worst and average case analysis on the deviation from optimal solutions

CALL FOR PAPERS: IEEE Network Special Issue on Improving Quality of
Experience for Network Services
Manuscript Submission Deadline: 31 July 2009.
CFP in PDF: http://www.comsoc.org/livepubs/ni/info/cfp/CFP_SI_v4.pdf
In pursuit of new revenue opportunities and to improve
competitiveness, network service providers are offering new value-
added network services, such as VoIP, video on demand, IPTV, and so
on. With the increased competition, improving the quality of the
offered services as perceived by the users, commonly referred to as
the quality of experience (QoE), becomes very important to providers
in order to reduce customer churn and maintain and increase their
competitive edge. There are many issues that may impact users
perception in many different ways. For example, government regulation
on viewing IPTV may impact QoE in a way that may be difficult to
measure with traditional tools and techniques. Similarly, the pricing
strategy selected will likely to impact the QoE irrespective of the
technical performance of the underlying network. Developing tools and
techniques for accurately measuring, monitoring, and improving QoE in
complex end-to-end networking infrastructure has become the focus of
many industry R&D initiatives. QoE standardization is actively pursued
by International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and industry
consortia. At the same time, despite the considerable foundational
progress already made, engineering QoE for existing and future network-
based services remains a challenging research topic, hence, attracting
significant interest from academia as well.
This timely special issue will bring together researchers from
industry, academia and standard bodies to present and analyze this
challenging and important area of improving QoE for existing and
future network services. We are soliciting original research and
survey articles written in a tutorial style comprehensible to all
readers of the magazine regardless of their speciality. Submissions
will go through an open call-for- papers and will undergo rigorous
peer review process. Topics of interest include, but not limited to:
* QoE measuring, monitoring and performance improvement strategies for
network services (e.g., IPTV, VoIP, VoD, Internet)
* Modeling of user satisfaction and tolerance to quality degradation
* Test-bed studies of QoE for networked applications
* Impact of user mobility on QoE
* Impact of radio and network resource utilization and management on QoE
* Impact of billing and pricing on QoE
* Impact of regulatory issues on QoE
* Measurement and optimization of end-to-end QoE
Prospective authors must prepare their original submissions in
accordance with the IEEE Network guidelines to authors, see http://www.comsoc.org/livepubs/ni/info/authors.html
. Authors should submit their single column, double-spaced manuscript
electronically in PDF format by email to the corresponding guest
editor (with cc to all the other guest editors) according to the
following timetable (authors are encouraged to notify at least 15 days
before deadline, their intention to submit a paper indicating title,
authors and keywords):
* Paper Submission Deadline: 31 July 2009
* Acceptance notification to authors: 01 November 2009
