Wireless sensor networks are aggregates of sensor nodes into sophisticated sensing, computational and communication infrastructures. These new networks are having a significant impact (and promises to have even more) on a wide array of applications ranging from military, to scientific, to industrial, to health-care, to domestic, establishing ubiquitous computing that will pervade society and redefine the way in which we live and work. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers both from industry and academia. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of sensor networks are solicited. Papers describing prototype and experimental implementations and deployment of sensor networks and systems are particularly welcome. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Sensor-based systems and applications - Operating systems - Middleware and software tools - Networking architectures and protocols - Data gathering, aggregation and dissemination - Topology control - Power management and energy-efficient design - Time synchronization - Location management - Sensor networks with mobile elements - Cross-layer architectures - Intelligent sensor nodes - Security and dependability issues - Modelling and performance evaluation - Measurements PAPER SUBMISSION Papers should contain original material and not be previously published, or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts must be limited to 6 pages in IEEE 8.5x11 conference format, and formatted in accordance with the IEEE Computer Society author guidelines (ftp://pubftp.computer.org/Press/Outgoing/proceedings/INSTRUCT.HTM). All submissions will be handled via EDAS. Accepted papers will be published by the IEEE Computer Society Press in the combined PerCom 2009 workshops proceedings. Research on ubiquitous intelligence is an emerging research field covering many disciplines. A series of grand challenges exist to move from the current level of computing services to the smart world of adaptive and intelligent services. Started in 2005, the series of UIC conferences has been held in Taipei, Nagasaki, Three Gorges (China), Hong Kong and Oslo. UIC-09 will include a highly selective program of technical papers, accompanied by workshops, panel discussions and keynote speeches. Established as a premier venue in the area of ubiquitous intelligence and computing, UIC-09 will offer a forum for researchers to exchange ideas and experiences in developing intelligent/smart objects, environments and systems. The goal of this special issue is to explore the development of wireless vehicular ad hoc network technologies about communication, networking, and applications. A good communication protocol design can achieve highly reliable, highly scalable, and high performance. In aspect of networking, there are many challenges that how to offer quality of service, build high performance routing, provide mobility management, and create secure vehicular ad hoc networks. VANET safety applications include safety warnings and collision avoidance. This is imperious to improve the non-safety applications and reduce the occurrence of collision. VANETs present a highly active field of research, development, standardization and field trials. Throughout the world, there are many national/international projects in government, industry, and academia devoted to VANETs, for example consortia like VSC (US), C2CCC (Europe) and InternetITS (Japan), standardization efforts like IEEE 802.11p (WAVE) and field trials like the large-scale Vehicle Infrastructure Integration Program (VII) in the US. The special issue solicits high-quality theoretical as well as practical works on a broad range of issues important to the communication, networking, and applications for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). CALL FOR PAPERS For the reliable performance evaluation of wireless networks, realistic models and credible simulation scenarios are crucial. Recently, in the area of wireless networks, it has been shown that simplistic models for mobility, traffic, and signal propagation yield results that are too optimistic. In order to provide more credible models, traces from specific scenarios need to be acquired and then realistic scenario models need to be developed and validated. We solicit papers on mobility, traffic, propagation, and scenario modelling for various wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers on trace measurement architectures and trace characterizations of wireless networks are also welcome. The main purpose of this workshop is to promote further research interests and activities on scenario modelling of wireless networks. It is also aimed at increasing the synergy between academic and industrial researchers working in this area. We are interested in experimental, systems-related, theoretical, and work-in-progress papers in all aspects of wireless network scenarios. We particularly look for position papers containing highly original ideas in the following topic areas, although papers describing other challenges unique to or exacerbated by mobility are also welcome: * Operating system and distributed systems support for mobile computing * Coordination, aggregation, and spontaneous interaction of mobile devices * Novel applications and environments supporting mobility * HCI issues related to mobile computing * Security and privacy of mobile computing * Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility Submissions describing new lower-level technologies are welcome if they focus on how the technology is being used or integrated into a system or application. HotMobile 2009 will be a highly interactive workshop. Submissions will be judged based upon originality, technical merit, topical relevance, and likelihood of leading to insightful discussion at the workshop. To encourage an atmosphere conducive to participation, attendance will be limited to 70 participants. Authors of submitted papers and accepted demo proposals will be given first priority, with others able to register on a space-available basis. Paper submissions are due on Oct 13, 2008 at 23:59:59 PDST. Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format, including all references, figures and tables. Recently, a cross-layer design has become a popular topic in which more and more researchers are engaged. That leads to a lot of cross-layer design proposals for wireless networks. This special issue is intended to foster state-of-the-art research pertaining to cross-layer design in the area of future generation wireless networks. The emphasis of this special issue will be on cross-layer protocol interactions and design of cross-layer optimized techniques. The issue will focus on a range of future generation wireless networks cross-layer design related topics including network architectures, mobility management, session mobility, security mechanism, services, and novel applications associated with their utilization, and hybrid routing protocols for mobile wireless networks, e.g., cellular/WLAN/WiMAX/ad hoc networks. Submitted papers for this special issue are expected to focus on cross-layer design related to future generation wireless networks and to present novel results and solutions to solve various problems and challenges foreseen in future generation wireless networks. All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed. Final selection of papers will be based on their quality and relevance to this special issue as well as the journal. From a number of angles it appears that we have reached a point in the impressive development cycle of the Internet that now requires some major change. However, research and development in these areas is still at an early stage and the space of potential solutions is far from being explored. The International Workshop on the Network of the Future (Future-Net 09) is a platform for both clean-slate as well as evolutionary approaches for a redesign of the Internet.
