The main focus of this workshop is on simulation of wireless multi-hop networks. The SWiN workshop is devoted to the topic of wireless multi-hop network simulators. An efficient and accurate simulation of these networks raises various issues which generally need to be addressed from several research domains simultaneously. As examples, we can consider the wireless physical layer modeling and simulation, the support of large scale networks, the simulation of complex R/F systems such as MIMO ones, the emulation of wireless nodes, etc. In particular but not exclusively, the Program Committee will be seeking high quality papers on the following aspects of wireless network simulation: - Radio medium modeling & simulation; - Scalability, large scale networks support; - Validation of simulators and simulation results; - Simulators benchmarking and comparisons; - Support of advanced R/F systems (MIMO, smart-antenna); - Support of distributed physical layer schemes (distributed signal processing, cooperative schemes); - Wireless node simulation or emulation; - Interoperability of simulators, emulators and experiments; - Distributed simulation; - Implementation of simulators. This workshop will be an opportunity to present the current works in these domains as well as to foster discussion and cooperation among researchers coming from the fields of simulation, radio medium modeling, ad hoc networking and wireless sensor networking. It will also be the occasion for people directly involved in the development and implementation of simulators to meet and confront their work with the models, applications and requests coming from the research communities that effectively use the simulators. In addition to contributed talks, the workshop program will include two tutorials on wireless physical layer modeling and wireless network simulators. SWiN 2008 will be held in Avignon, in the "Provence" part of Southern France. Avignon is known for its "Palais des Papes" (Palace of the Popes), where the Popes lived for much of the 14th century. CALL FOR PAPERS Themenheft "Energiebewusste Systeme" Praxis der Informationsverarbeitung und Kommunikation (PIK) Fachzeitschrift für den Einsatz von Informationssystemen Energie ist eine kritische, manchmal sogar die kritischste Ressource bei vielen modernen Rechensystemen und deren Anwendungen vom Sensornetz, über das Mobiltelefon bis hin zu Laptops und Servern. Somit stellt dieses Arbeitsgebiet einen wichtigen Bereich der aktuellen Forschung im Bereich Systemsoftware (Betriebs- und Kommunikationssysteme) dar. Insbesondere entstehen, getrieben durch immer kleinere und mobilere Endgeräte, neue Anwendungsszenarien mit hohen Anforderungen an Verfügbarkeit, Langlebigkeit, Adaptivität und Selbstorganisation. Im Rahmen des GI/ITG KuVS Fachgesprächs "Energiebewusste Systeme und Methoden" wurde eine Reihe von Forschungsgebieten erarbeitet, die einen wesentlichen methodischen Beitrag zu neuartigen energiebewussten Systemen leisten können. Betriebssysteme: Einzig das Betriebssystem kennt alle strukturellen Eigenschaften der darunter liegenden Hardware wie auch der laufenden Anwendungen. Somit kann es dabei die Hardwarekomponenten in den jeweils für das Gesamtsystem optimalen Betriebsmodus versetzen und die Verweildauer in den jeweiligen Betriebsmodi durch eine energiebewusste Aktivitätensteuerung beeinflussen. Drahtlose Netze: Funkübertragung ist im Vergleich zu Berechnungen oft wesentlich teurer in Bezug auf die benötigt Energie. Durch optimierte Technologien für die zuverlässige Übertragung, Vorverarbeitung und Zwischenspeicherung kann die Sende- und Empfangszeit verringert werden. Neue Kommunikationsparadigmen helfen den Aufwand für die Statusverwaltung zu minimieren. Kommunikationsprotokolle: Aufbauend auf den spezifischen Eigenschaften und Funktionen der verfügbaren Übertragungstechniken, lassen sich Kommunikationsprotokolle für energiebewusstes Arbeiten anpassen. Sogenanntes Cross-Layer-Design hilft, Verzerrungs- und Störeffekte zwischen den Protokollen der Sicherungs-, Netzwerk- und Transportschicht zu vermeiden bzw. zu minimieren. Middleware: Mit der zunehmenden Vernetzung mobiler und eingebetteter Systeme ist das energiebewusste Arbeiten von Basisfunktionalität sogenannter Middleware-Dienste, wie Kommunikation und Vermittlung, unabdingbar. Insbesondere kann auf dieser Schicht nicht isoliert gearbeitet werden. Unter dem thematischen Schwerpunkt energiebewusste Systeme und Methoden sind Beiträge zu allen relevanten Themengebieten erwünscht. Dazu gehören unter anderem aber nicht ausschließlich: - Betriebssystemunterstützung - Kommunikationsmethoden - Protokollentwurf - Simulationstechniken - Schichtenübergreifender Entwurf - Beobachtung des Laufzeitverhaltens realer Systeme Eingereichte Manuskripte sollten ca. 6 gedruckten Seiten entsprechen (eine Seite in der PIK entspricht ca. 6000 Zeichen ohne Abbildungen). Sowohl Deutsche als auch Englische Beiträge sind erwünscht. Alle eingereichten Manuskripte werden von unabhängigen Gutachtern bewertet. Similar to the Internet, these trends will revolutionize existing paradigms of communication, networking, and computing. In particular, the complexity hidden in such dynamic large-scale networks and services calls for self-management and autonomicity as a necessary condition for obtaining purposeful systems. The challenges posed by such a vision cover a wide range of disciplines and sciences, including computing, communication, distributed systems, and control systems. Further, these challenges call for a new, integrated and multidisciplinary approach to pervasive computing and communication environments, giving rise to a new converged science, able to work at the junction of systems, computing and communication sciences. The Autonomics conference provides an international forum driving the emergent science of autonomic systems, bringing together research communities in communication and computing, promoting cross-fertilization among the different disciplines involved. Scope: The primary research challenges faced are the communication, design, programming, deployment, use, and fundamental limits of autonomic, pervasive, context-aware systems running on top of dynamic, possibly large-scale, distributed systems. Authors are invited to submit papers to Autonomics 2008 reporting on original research related to the design, implementation, analysis, evaluation, and deployment of autonomic systems. The conference intends to attract attendees with diverse backgrounds. We solicit papers in autonomic, pervasive, and context-aware systems. Advances in networking infrastructure as well as middleware are vital to delivering telemedicine services regardless of a patient's physical location. In-home care for elderly persons is costly and can require sensors, wireless monitoring devices, and networking infrastructure and middleware to automatically contact emergency services. Healthcare is motivating unique basic research challenges in wireless and pervasive communications due to requirements for safe signal propagation characteristics, low network latency, low packet loss, high quality image and video transmission, and the need for safe, secure, and dependable operation. A number of wireless networking and communication technologies that support ubiquitous wireless services and applications are currently in wide spread use. Wi-Fi and WiMax based wireless mesh networks are examples of such technologies currently under deployment, fostering broadband wireless network access and supporting different communication ranges. While these technologies provide flexible communication compared to wired networks and single hop communication models, they are still restricted to the existing wireless backbone coverage. The convergence of ubiquitous computing and networking with wireless and mobile networking technologies opens a path to a prom! ising opportunity for ubiquitous wireless mesh networks and services. Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this CfP CALL FOR PAPERS IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC) BIO-INSPIRED NETWORKING Technology is taking us to a world where myriads of massively networked devices interact with the physical world in multiple ways, and at multiple scales, from the global Internet down to micro- and nano-devices. Many of these devices are highly mobile and autonomous, and must adapt to the surrounding environment in a totally distributed and unsupervised way. Recently, a number of approaches inspired by biological mechanisms and phenomena have been proposed as a strategy to handle the complexity of massively distributed systems such as the Internet, or wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. The goal of bio-inspired approaches is to discover and to adapt biological methods to technical solutions that are showing similarly high stability, adaptability, and scalability as biological entities often have. This special issue intends to highlight the latest achievements in the new research domain of bio-inspired networking. In particular, the issue focuses on methodologies for identifying relevant biological mechanisms, the modeling of these mechanisms, and their application to technical solutions. Prospective articles are expected to outline either proof of concept studies with direct comparison to classical technical solutions, or theoretical mathematical models of biological principles associated with fundamental challenges in communication systems. For this special issue, we consider all techniques with direct biological background including animal learning strategies, self-organizing methods as observed from swarms down to nano-structures that are observed and analyzed in molecular biology. Classical complex systems research is explicitly excluded from the scope whereas a comparison to well-known techniques in this domain is appreciated. This special issue is dedicated to bio-inspired approaches addressing various aspects of networking and communication systems. The topics of interest include the following domains: • Self-organizing communication systems • Evolutionary and adaptive systems and protocols • Scalable systems and protocols • Self-learning algorithms • Self-healing systems and protocols • Security mechanisms • Network algorithms and protocols • Scalable and adaptive network architectures • Congestion control mechanisms • Performance evaluation of bio-inspired networks Original unpublished contributions, and invited articles will be considered for the issue. The papers should be formatted according to IEEE-JSAC guidelines. Call for Papers DANMS 2008 3rd International Workshop on Distributed Autonomous Network Management Systems Co-located with Globecom 2008, New Orleans, USA 30 November, 2008 http://www.danms.org The DANMS workshop series focuses on distributed and autonomous principles for network management and applications of those principles in network design. This year's workshop emphasizes Service Centric Network Management considering the impact on the system, across the whole information flow from service creation to deployment in the network.
