Call for Papers
Iterative Decoding and Cross-Layering Techniques for
Multimedia Broadcasting and Communications
The explosive growth of multimedia applications over the
Internet and the ever-increasing users' demands over
commercial terrestrial digital multimedia broadcasting all
over the world call for efficient physical and cross-layer
techniques able to mitigate the potential problems
limiting broadband services over wireless networks. In
this scenario, mobile multimedia is expected to be one of
the key services of future wireless mobile networks.
Meanwhile, recent advances in digital communications have
paved the way to a variety of standards aimed at providing
multimedia services over terrestrial broadband networks.
To cite but a few, DVB-H, T-DVB, T-DMB, wireless LANs, and
wireless MANs are some of the most recent standards
enabling such technology.
Iterative decoding techniques for both source, channel,
and joint source-channel coding and decoding and
cross-layering techniques have proven to be very effective
for providing a viable means of achieving
capacity-approaching performance at very reduced
computational burden.
The main aim of this special issue is to highlight
state-of-the-art techniques on the most recent research
advances enabling digital multimedia services over
broadband wireless networks, focused on physical and
cross-layering solutions. Novel contributions, previously
unpublished, that are not being submitted to any other
journal, are sought.
Topics of interests include, but are not limited to, the
following subject categories:
Iterative decoding techniques for concatenated channel
codes (turbo codes and serially concatenated codes)
Iterative decoding techniques for joint source-channel
decoding
Novel capacity-approaching channel codes: coding
strategies and efficient decoding algorithms
Cross-layer modelling/analysis and optimization techniques
Standardization activities on digital multimedia
broadcasting protocols
Space-time coding and decoding
Novel MIMO solutions for counteracting multipath mobile
channels
Channel estimation and equalization
Improved channel equalization techniques for SIMO and MIMO
systems
Experimental testbeds
Hardware Implementation and SoC solutions

SCOPE
Multi-hop wireless Ad Hoc and sensor networks are self-organizing systems
formed by co-operating nodes within communication range of each other that
form temporary networks. Ad hoc wireless networks allow anywhere, anytime
network connectivity with complete lack of control, ownership, and
regulatory influence. The last few years have witnessed a wealth of research
ideas on ad hoc and sensor networks that are moving rapidly into
commercialization and standardization. Such networks can be randomly and
rapidly deployed and reconfigured and easily tailored to specific
applications including entertainment, civilian, military, etc. Moreover, an
ad hoc architecture is highly robust to node failure and can provide a
high-level of fault tolerance due to nodal redundancy and its distributed
nature. Furthermore, energy efficiency can be achieved through multi-hop
routing communication. Bandwidth reuse can also benefit from dividing the
single long range hop to multiple short hops with each hop having a shorter
range. Several challenges face are standing in the way to achieving
ubiquitous deployment of ad hoc and sensor networks. These include variable
topology, device heterogeneity, limited power supply and the lack of
effective energy-efficient design, lack of QoS and application support, etc.
This symposium aims at providing a forum for sharing ideas among researchers
and practitioners working on state-of-the-art solutions to the challenges
above. We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished
contributions addressing various aspects of ad hoc and sensor networks.

IWSOS 2008
3rd International Workshop on Self-Organizing Systems
- Self-Organizing Networks and Networked Systems -
December 10-12, 2008
Vienna, Austria
http://iwsos.ani.univie.ac.at/
Submission deadline (full papers): June 22, 2008
*********************************************************************
Workshop Scope
--------------
IWSOS 2008 is the third workshop in a series of annual workshops
dedicated to self-organization in networks and networked systems.
The necessity for and expected benefit of self-organization is
caused by the growing scale, complexity, and heterogeneity of future
networked systems, like the future Internet. For example, these
networks will consist of interconnected infrastructure-based, mobile
ad-hoc, and sensor networks that could be spontaneously deployed in
hostile environments, have a dynamic population and a potentially
short life time. In spite of this, there will be stringent user
requirements, such as resilience and real-time guarantees. Although
self-organization is desirable for these kinds of networks, it is
not yet clear to what extent self-organization can be exploited.
Research into networked systems has recently started to
systematically investigate self-organization, which has lead to a
multitude of open research issues. The applicability of well-known
self-organizing techniques to specific networks and networked
systems has to be investigated, as well as adaptations and novel
approaches inspired by, e.g., cooperation in nature and evolutionary
dynamics, sociology, and game theory. Additionally, models originating
from areas like feedback control and complex system's research, are
required for these networked systems in order to analyze their
controllability and emergent behavior. Aspects of engineering
self-organizing networked systems should be studied that discuss
paradigms like programmable networks, and tools and frameworks for
deploying, testing, and monitoring self-organizing networks. The role
of self-organization in the future Internet and the impact on its
architecture is an important topic, as well as the application of
self-organization in future intelligent transportation systems and
vehicular ad-hoc networks.
Building on the success of its predecessors, this workshop aims at
bringing together leading international researchers to create a
visionary forum for investigating the potential of self-organization
for networked systems by including the following key topics (not a
restricted list):
* Self-organization and self-management
* Self-configuration and self-optimization
* Self-protection, -diagnosis, and -healing
* Autonomic networking principles and practice
* Control theory based models and approaches of self-organization
* Feedback control in networked systems
* Group-forming networks and techniques
* Programmable and cognitive networks for self-organization
* Visualization of network system state
* Inspiring models of self-organization in nature and society
(e.g., bio-inspired or based on game theory)
* Risks in self-organization and risk management techniques
* The (un-)controllability of self-organizing emergent systems
* Quality of Service / service level agreements and
self-organization
* Resilience, robustness, and fault tolerance for networked
systems
* Security in self-organizing networked systems
* Self-* sensor and ad-hoc networks
* Self-* techniques in peer-to-peer networks
* Self-organization of over- and underlays and in cross-layering
* Self-* networks and networked systems for ubiquitous computing

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS -- MAMA 2008
The Tenth Workshop on MAthematical performance Modeling and Analysis
MAMA 2008
June 2, 2008
Annapolis, Maryland, USA
Held in conjunction with SIGMETRICS 2008
http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~sigmet08/MAMAindex.html
Sponsored by ACM SIGMETRICS
The complexity of computer systems, networks and applications, as well as
the advancements in computer technology, continue to grow at a rapid pace.
Mathematical analysis, modeling and optimization are playing an important
role in research studies to investigate fundamental issues and tradeoffs
at the core of performance problems in the design and implementation of
complex computer systems, networks and applications.
The Tenth Workshop on MAthematical performance Modeling and Analysis (MAMA
2008) seeks to bring together researchers working on the mathematical,
methodological and theoretical aspects of performance analysis, modeling
and optimization. It is intended to provide a forum at SIGMETRICS
conferences for talks on early research in the more mathematical areas of
computer performance analysis. These talks tend to be based on very
recent research results (including work in progress) or on new research
results that will be otherwise submitted only to a journal (or recently
have been submitted to a journal). Thus, part of the goal is to
complement and supplement the SIGMETRICS Conference program with such
talks without removing any theoretical contributions from the main
technical program.
This year's workshop will be held on June 2 (before the main SIGMETRICS
technical program). In addition to the presentation of extended
abstracts, the workshop will include time for informal technical
discussions among the speakers and attendees.
SUBMISSION INFORMATION
April 18, 2008: Abstract Submission Deadline
May 2, 2008: Acceptance Notification
May 9, 2008: Final Abstracts for Workshop
Aug 1, 2008: Final Extended Abstracts for PER
MAMA 2008 encourages the submission of abstracts describing early research
on the general mathematical, methodological and theoretical aspects of
performance analysis, modeling and optimization. Authors are asked to
submit 2-3 page abstracts, following the same formatting instructions as
the main SIGMETRICS conference (refer to
http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~sigmet08/cfp.html), before the above deadline.
(NOTE that this is different from the submission guidelines in previous
years.) Submissions violating these formatting guidelines will be
returned
without review. Abstracts should be submitted electronically, as an
e-mail
attachment, to mss(a)watson.ibm.com. Postscript or PDF is preferred,
although other arrangements can be made by contacting Mark Squillante
(mss(a)watson.ibm.com).
Submissions will be reviewed by the MAMA program committee, from which a
number of abstracts will be selected for inclusion in the workshop
program. A version of the abstracts will be provided at the workshop.
Extended versions of the abstracts will appear in a special issue of
Performance Evaluation Review (PER), with a due date after the workshop
making it possible for authors to incorporate the results of, or simply
mention, any relevant discussions at the workshop. Note that there are no
copyright issues with PER, and thus authors will have complete freedom to
submit their work elsewhere.

Call for Papers
IEEE Communications Magazine Feature Topic on Advances in Cooperative and
Relay Communications
In wireless networks, relays have been traditionally used to extend the
range of communication systems. However, in recent years, other applications
of relay communications have emerged. One such emerging application is to
assist in the communication between the source and destination via some
cooperation protocol. By controlling medium access between source and relays
coupled with the appropriate modulation or coding in such cooperative
schemes, it has been found that the diversity of the system can be improved.
In multi-user systems, different users can also act as cooperative partners
or relays to share resources and assist each other in information
transmission, thereby creating a cooperative network. One other emerging
application is the exchange of information between multiple users through
relay(s). In such cases, by exploiting the knowledge of one's own
transmitted signal, the throughput of these systems can be drastically
increased.
For cooperative and relay communications, the MAC layer also has many unique
features. The MAC in this case, is concerned with more than one hop
communication, is distributed and cooperative and works for
multipoint-to-multipoint communication. The MAC also needs to have knowledge
about network topology and account for node mobility. Accordingly, a new
design of the MAC layer has to be devised to include new functionalities as
well as MAC layer routing.
With the large benefits to be reaped from employing cooperative and relay
techniques, several standardization groups, such as IEEE 802.16 and IEEE
802.11, have started standardization processes to include such technologies
into their prevailing standards. These efforts will no doubt attract even
more interests from the academia and industry, advancing cooperative and
relay technologies even further in the coming years.
With interests from both the research and industrial communities gaining
momentum, there is an urgent need to better understand as well as to keep
track of cutting edge research in cooperative and relay communications. We
plan this special issue to help address that need, as well as to help
researchers looking to jump on the bandwagon. Therefore, the special issue
will focus on recent advances as well as survey papers in cooperative and
relay communications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the
following topics:
. Cooperative algorithms and protocols
. Partner(s) selection in cooperative relay and routing
. Cooperative resource allocation and management
. Relay strategies for cooperative communications
. Cooperative and relay technologies applied to WLAN, WMAN and
cellular networks
. Multidirectional relaying
. Distributed coding and modulation
. Multiple antenna systems and protocols for cooperative
communications
. Information theoretic aspects of cooperative communications
. MAC issues and MAC layer routing
. Cross-layer approaches for joint PHY and MAC optimization

CALL FOR PAPERS
EURASIP JOURNAL ON WIRELESS COMMUNICATIONS AND NETWORKS
RECENT PROGRESSES IN WIRELESS ACCESS IN VEHICULAR ENVIRONMENT
(WAVE) AND FUTURE VEHICULAR COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS:
THEORETICAL ANALYSIS AND IMPLEMENTATION
Wireless access in vehicular environments (WAVE) technology comes into
sight as a state-of-the-art solution to contemporary vehicular
communications, which is anticipated to be widely applied in the near
future to radically improve the transportation environment in the
aspects of safety, intelligent management and data exchange services.
WAVE systems will fundamentally smooth the progress of Intelligent
Transportation Systems (ITS) by providing it with high performance
physical platforms. WAVE systems will build upon the IEEE 802.11p
standard, which is still active and expected to be ratified in April,
2009. Meanwhile, the VHF/UHF (700MHz) band vehicular communications
systems are attracting increasingly attention recently.
The fast varying and harsh vehicular environment bring about several
fresh research topics on the study of WAVE systems and future vehicular
communications systems, which include physical layer challenges
associated with mobile channels, capacity evaluation, novel network
configuration, effective media access control (MAC) protocols, and
robust routing and congestion control schemes.
The objective of this special section is to gather and circulate recent
progresses in this fast developing area of WAVE and future vehicular
communications systems spanning from theoretical analysis to testbed
setup, and from physical/MAC layers’ enabling technology to network
protocol. These research and implementation activities will be
considerably helpful to the design of WAVE and future vehicular
communications systems by removing major technical barriers and
presenting theoretical guidance. This special issue will cover, but not
limit to, the following main topics:
· 700MHz/5.8GHz vehicle-to-vehicle
(V2V)/vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) single-input single-output
(SISO)/MIMO channel measurement and modeling, channel spatial and
temporal characteristics exploration;
· Doppler shift study, evaluation and estimate, time and
frequency synchronizations, channel estimate and prediction;
· Utilization of MIMO, space-time coding, smart antenna, adaptive
modulation and coding;
· Performance study and capacity analysis of V2V and V2I
communications operating over both 5.8GHz and 700Mz;
· Software radio, cognitive radio and dynamic spectrum access
technologies applied to WAVE and future vehicular communications systems;

CALL FOR PAPERS (Submission deadline : May 1, 2008)
Which networks for which services
The number of network technologies has dramatically increased over the 10
past years. This growth concerns network architecture issues
(operator-centric versus autonomous networks), access technologies (UMTS,
WiFi, WiMax, ADSL, FTTH, etc.), and core network operation (IPv6, IMS,
etc.).
When a new technology appears, one question often remains unsolved:
which services may be developed with this technology? This question raises
several other issues: how are existing services impacted by this technology?
Which new features are enabled by this technology? Is the technology
appropriate to guarantee end-to-end quality of service? What is the
evolution path between current network implementations and an implementation
using this new technology? Is it possible to interconnect different
technologies? How is security ensured if this new technology is implemented?
The theme for the EUNICE 2008 summer school "Which networks for which
services?" has been proposed to promote fruitful exchanges between academic
institutions and Industry, who are equally concerned with the above issues.
The Eunice Summer School is open to researchers from any institution, and we
cordially invite all researchers to contribute with original submissions.
