Call for Papers
---------------
Adaptability is a generic property of a system that consists in the
systems capability to self-adjust its behavior according to its input,
load or users in order to meet certain performance criteria. Adaptability
has been described as a characteristic of autonomous behavior and is often
related to possessing learning capabilities through analysis of past
behaviors and interactions. Adaptability has been intensely studied by
various areas of engineering including artificial intelligence, control
systems and human centered systems. Adaptability has been set as an
important requirement for systems devised to work in new generation global
networked and distributed environments like wireless networks, P2P
networks, Web systems, multi-agent systems, grids, etc. Such systems are
expected to pose new challenges for the development and application of
adaptation techniques, due to their special characteristics including:
interconnectivity, interactivity, distribution, heterogeneity and
fault-tolerance.
This special session welcomes submissions covering all aspects of
adaptability in networked systems and media, including (but not limited
to):
- Self-configuring and self-structuring systems
- Adaptive control in communication networks
- Adaptive networked control systems
- Rule-based adaptive systems
- Computational intelligence and adaptability
- Adaptability in multi-agent systems
- Personalized and adaptive hypermedia

Call for Papers
The wireless multihop communication has been one of key research issues in
recent
years both in academia and wireless industry. It encompasses ad hoc radio
networks,
sensor networks, wireless mesh networks and mobile multihop relay related to
the
industrial and standardization activities such as IEEE 802.11s, 802.15.4,
802.16j, etc.
Further the multihop communications can be combined with cooperative
communications
and network coding, which attracted more researchers in this field.
The idea behind such multihop communications is to utilize the availability
of other nodes
or to borrow their transmission capability. This in many cases exceeds the
delay caused
by the multihop relay, the gain from which is capacity enhancement as well
as coverage
extension of plain radio networks.
Now we turn our attention to the robotics area. In these days, many
researchers are
noticing group behaviors found in small insects or animals such as ants,
birds, and fish,
trying to realize such behaviors into the control and coordination of a team
of robots with
their local interaction. The multiple (usually small) robots communicate
each other,
sharing the same mission, naturally through wireless communications. In this
respect,
wireless multihop communication is an excellent candidate for inter-robot
information
exchange.
The main idea of this workshop is to bridge the above two areas (wireless
multihop
communications and networked robotics) by opening a place for researchers to
meet
and exchange their ideas. The workshop welcomes submissions on all aspects
of the
themes, which include (but not limited to) the following topics:
- Communication architecture for collaborative robot systems
- Biologically inspired swarm robotics with networking functionality
- Multiple robot networking with mutihop- and cooperative communications
- Network coding and wireless relay technologies for cooperative robotics
- Learning and adaptation in cooperative environments
- Applications of multi-robot network systems
- Ad hoc robot networks
- Cognitive communication technologies for inter-robot team work
- Exploiting robot mobility in wireless relay networks
- QoS support in networked robotics
- Wireless multihop networks under node mobility

Call for papers
Special issue of IEEE Network Magazine on
Composable context aware services
Wireless networks are revolutionizing the world around us. Imagine
going about your day, only carrying a small mobile
“companion” device. Your companion is small but the world around you
is replete with a variety of displays, IO peripherals,
sensors, and storage devices. As you near these resources, your
companion “borrows” some of them and instantly morphs
itself into a full fledged computer. All this happens without the
hassles of wires, with utmost simplicity, and robust security.
Beyond connectivity, your companion knows you, understands your
preferences, tracks your calendar, and even learns
your habits. It's capable of taking actions appropriate to your
current situations, with little or no inputs from you. The device
provides uses that you need and makes use of what is around to
provide a higher-level of computing experience.
Scope of special issue
The purpose of this special issue will be to present a landscape of
the state-of-the-art in research and practice of networking
for composable context aware computing and connectivity. This
special issue will present a collection of articles which
discuss (a) high-level software, applications, and middleware that
are needed to create and support composable services,
(b) design of network protocols and software stacks for automatic
composition, (c) the impact of context awareness to simplify
network configuration, and (d) Implications for network system
architecture and design. Papers should bridge the gap from
academic research to early experience or deployment of monitoring
infrastructure as embedded network management entities.
In particular, papers must fit the target audience of IEEE Network
and, therefore, have content that has tutorial value
and be comprehensive.
Submissions should preferably address one of the following topics:
Topics of interest include
· High-level software and applications needed to support and
provide composable services
· Security and privacy issues in the context of composable
services
· Middleware infrastructure needed to bridge the gap between
connectivity provided by underlying
network protocols and high-level software that creates
composable services.
· Communication protocols and architectures for device
ensembles/collection of devices (set up, discovery, performance
optimizations)
· Security architectures for device introduction and setup
· Wireless device composition – system architecture, design,
and implications of communications of wireless devices
for such environments (except the physical layer aspects of
such devices such as antenna design)
· Integration of location awareness into communications stack
and mobility
· Application of context-based inferencing to adapt in the
presence of accessibility to multiple communication networks
· Architecture and structure of applications that use
collaborative network sensing to create context-aware applications
· Challenges and solutions in constructing applications that
can dynamically compose and provide a service based on
the resources available in the immediate vicinity
· Novel approaches to network management and operation esp. in
the context of mobile, wireless networks
· System architecture tradeoffs of communication vs computation
to support a variety of devices and form factors in the
composable/context aware environments
· Implications of context awareness to WPAN-, WLAN-, WMAN- and
cellular-based networks
· Sensory issues such as composing or inferring user context
from multiple sensor data
Manuscript submission Authors must submit their manuscript (single
column, double-spaced) electronically in PDF format by email to
Raj Yavatkar (raj.yavatkar(a)intel.com) before the deadline. The
manuscript should be written in single column, double-spaced,
in accordance to the guidelines of the IEEE network magazine (http://
www.comsoc.org/pubs/net/). Please also include information
about the manuscript (title, complete list of authors, corresponding
author's contact, abstract, and keywords) in the body of your
submission email message.

Recently, wireless mesh networking is attracting significant interest
from academia,
industry, and standard organizations. With several favorable
characteristics, such
as dynamic self-organization, self-configuration, self-healing, easy
maintenance,
high scalability and reliable services, wireless mesh networks have been
advocated
as a cost-effective approach to support high-speed last mile
connectivity and
ubiquitous broadband access in the context of home networking,
enterprise networking,
or community networking. Despite recent advances, and the technical
accumulations
from more than a decade's research effort in mobile ad hoc networks,
many research
issues remain in all protocol layers of wireless mesh networks. For
example, the
introducing of mixed (infrastructure and ad hoc) architecture, multi-radio,
multi-channel, and multi-antenna, have brought new challenges in the
design of
physical, MAC, and routing protocols. New application scenarios, such as
all-wireless
office, are urging researchers to address enhanced QoS support and
various security
issues in the design of different protocol layers for wireless mesh
networks.
This workshop aims to bring together the technologies and researchers
who share
interest in the area of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks. The main
purpose is to
promote discussions of research and relevant activities in the design of
architectures,
protocols, algorithms, services, and applications for wireless networks.
It also aims
at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals
working in this
area. We plan to seek papers that address theoretical, experimental, and
work in-progress
at the all layers of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks, from application
layer to the
physical layer.
Topics covered by the workshop will include, but are not limited to, the
following:
Multi-radio and ?multi-channel wireless mesh networking
Multi-hop wireless communications and ad hoc networking
MAC protocols (IEEE 802.11, 802.15, 802.16, 802.20, and beyond)
Routing, scheduling, and channel assignment protocols
Quality of Services provisioning
Multimedia communications over mesh and ad hoc networks
Network deployment, localization, and synchronization
Topology construction and maintenance
Modeling and performance evaluations
Cross layer optimizations
Power-aware and energy-efficient protocols and algorithms
Intelligent system techniques for mesh and ad hoc networks
Testbed, prototype, and practical systems
Novel applications of mesh and ad hoc networks
Vehicular mesh and ad hoc networks
Wireless sensor networks
Self-adaptive and self-organizing wireless networking systems

##################### ATC-08 Call For Papers ######################
The 5th International Conference on Autonomic and Trusted Computing
- Bring Safe, Self-x and Organic Computing Systems into Reality -
http://www.ux.uis.no/atc08/
Organized by
Oslo University College and University of Stavanger, Norway
Technical Sponsorship by
the IEEE Task Force on Intelligent Ubiquitous Computing
Oslo, Norway, June 23-25, 2008
###################################################################
Computing systems including hardware, software, communication and
networks are growing dramatically in both scale and heterogeneity,
becoming overly complex. Such complexity is getting even more critical
with the ubiquitous permeation of embedded devices and other pervasive
systems. To cope with the growing and ubiquitous complexity, Autonomic
Computing (AC) focuses on self-manageable computing and communication
systems that exhibit self-awareness, self-configuration,
self-optimization, self-healing, self-protection and other self-x
operations to the maximum extent possible without human intervention
or guidance. Organic Computing (OC) additionally emphasizes
natural-analogue concepts like self-organization and controlled
emergence.
Any autonomic or organic system must be trustworthy to avoid the risk
of losing control and retain confidence that the system will not
fail. Trust and/or distrust relationships in the Internet and in
pervasive infrastructures are key factors to enable dynamic
interaction and cooperation of various users, systems and services.
Trusted/Trustworthy Computing (TC) aims at making computing and
communication systems as well as services available, predictable,
traceable, controllable, assessable, sustainable, dependable,
persist-able, security/privacy protect-able, etc.
A series of grand challenges exist to achieve practical
self-manageable autonomic systems with truly trustworthy services.
ATC-08 addresses the most innovative research and development in these
challenging areas and includes all technical aspects related to
autonomic/organic computing (AC/OC) and trusted computing (TC).
ATC-08 is a successor of the First Int'l Workshop on Trusted and
Autonomic Ubiquitous and Embedded Systems (TAUES-05, Japan), the Int'l
Workshop on Trusted and Autonomic Computing Systems (TACS-06,
Austria), the 3rd International Conference on Autonomic and Trusted
Computing (ATC-06, China), and the 4th International Conference on
Autonomic and Trusted Computing (ATC-07, Hong Kong).
Topics include but are not limited to the following:
- AC/OC Theory and Models
Nervous/organic models, negotiation, cooperation, competition,
self-organization, emergence, etc.
- AC/OC Architectures and Systems
Autonomic elements & their relationship, frameworks, middleware,
observer/controller architectures, etc.
- AC/OC Components and Modules
Memory, storage, database, device, server, proxy, software, OS, I/O, etc.
- AC/OC Communication and Services
Networks, self-organized net, web service, grid, P2P, semantics,
agent, transaction, etc.
- AC/OC Tools and Interfaces
Tools/interfaces for AC/OC system development, test, monitoring,
assessment, supervision, etc.
- Trust Models and Specifications
Models and semantics of trust, distrust, mistrust, over-trust, cheat,
risk, reputation, reliability, etc.
- Trust-related Security and Privacy
Trust-related secure architecture, framework, policy, intrusion
detection/awareness, protocols, etc.
- Trusted Reliable and Dependable Systems
Fault-tolerant systems, hardware redundancy, robustness, survivable
systems, failure recovery, etc.
- Trustworthy Services and Applications
Trustworthy Internet/web/grid/P2P e-services, secured mobile services,
novel applications, etc.
- Trust Standards and Non-Technical Issues
Trust standards and issues related to personality, ethics, sociology,
culture, psychology, economy, etc.
