Sponsored by ACM SIGOPS
Authors are invited to submit papers to the 21st SOSP reporting on
original research related to the design, implementation, analysis,
evaluation, and deployment of operating systems. We seek submissions
of high quality that significantly further the knowledge and
understanding of the systems community. In keeping with SOSP
tradition, we will favor work that explores new territory, continues a
significant research dialog, or reflects on experience with practical
applications of the community's knowledge. Papers of particular merit
will be forwarded to ACM Transactions on Computer Systems for possible
publication in a special issue.
The symposium attracts attendees with diverse backgrounds. We solicit
papers in the traditional core of the operating system field, as well
as in the interfaces to areas such as computer architecture,
networking, programming languages, and databases. Topics of interest
include, but are not restricted to:
Robustness of complex systems Mobile computing
Scalability and performance Fault tolerant computing
Security Power management
Storage systems Sensor networks
I/O architectures Web services
Overlay networks Empirical studies
Virtualization System management
A good paper will demonstrate that the authors:
* are attacking a significant problem,
* have devised an interesting, compelling solution,
* have demonstrated the practicality and benefits of the solution,
* have drawn appropriate conclusions,
* have clearly described what they have done, and
* have clearly articulated the advances beyond previous work.
Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, interest,
clarity, relevance, and correctness. In addition to citing relevant,
published work, authors should relate their SOSP submissions to
relevant submissions of their own that are simultaneously under review
for this or other venues. The SOSP PC reserves the right to ask
authors to provide copies of related simultaneously-submitted papers.
Submissions will be done electronically. Detailed instructions for
the submission process will be posted on the conference Web site,
<www.sosp2007.org>. Submitted papers must be no longer than fourteen
(14) 8.5"x11" or A4 pages in a typeface no smaller than 10 point. The
page limit includes everything: references, title page, figures,
appendices, etc. Authors must make a good faith effort to anonymize
their submissions, and not identify themselves either explicitly or
by implication (e.g., through the references or
acknowledgments). Submissions violating the detailed formatting and
anonymization rules on the Web site will not be considered for
publication. There will be no extensions for reformatting.
Blind reviewing of full papers will be done by the program committee,
with limited use of outside referees. Papers will be provisionally

4th European Workshop on the application of
Nature-inspired techniques
to Telecommunication Networks and other
Connected Systems
Valencia, Spain, April 11-13, 2007
---------------------------------------------
Submission deadline: 10 November
2006
Notification of acceptance: 15 December
2006
Camera ready papers: 08 January
2007
---------------------------------------------
http://www.evostar.org/
EvoCOMNET 2007 is the fourth European Workshop on the
application of
Nature-inspired techniques to networked systems, with
special emphasis to
telecommunication networks. EvoCOMNET 2007 is part of
EVO*, that joins the
Europe's premier co-located events in the field of
Evolutionary Computing and
Nature-inspired techniques.
The rapid advances in computing and transmission
technologies are giving
impetus to the large-scale deployment of interconnected
systems for
communication and transport of data, voice, video and
resources. The global
Internet, and cellular, satellite, and Wi-Fi networks, as
well as power and
logistic networks, just to mention a few remarkable
examples, are at the same
time ubiquitous and at the very heart of the functioning
and success of modern
societies. On the other hand, all these networks are
increasingly
heterogeneous, complex, and dynamic, such as they present
a number of
challenging issues concerning their analysis and design,
management and
control, robustness and security.
Biological systems show a number of properties, such as
self-organization,
adaptivity, scalability, robustness, autonomy, locality of
interactions,
distribution, which are highly desirable to deal with the
growing complexity of
current and future networks. Therefore, in recent years a
growing number of
effective solutions for problems related to networked
systems have been
proposed by taking inspiration from the observation of
natural systems and
processes such as natural selection, insect societies,
immune systems, cultural
systems, collective behaviors of groups of animals/cells,
etc.
The aim of the workshop is to provide a forum to present
the cutting edge
research on Nature-inspired approaches to network-related
problems. The
workshop sought to provide a deep insight into the
effective potentialities of
Nature-inspired design to tackle the numerous problems
arising in networked
systems, and, in particular, in modern telecommunication
networks.

The 7th International Conference on
Next Generation Teletraffic and Wired/Wireless Advanced Networking
NEW2AN 2007
http://www.new2an.org/
September 3 - 7, 2007
St.Petersburg, Russia
CALL FOR PAPERS
About the Conference
Next-generation mobile networks will evolve out of existing wired and
wireless networks of different nature by means of convergence, fusion
and mutual penetration; next-generation multimedia services in turn
pose new requirements and challenges on treatment of traffic within
communication networks. This forms a framework on harmonization of
results obtained separately in different areas of network research
like network performance evaluation, architecture and protocol design,
and low layer network design. The conference goal is in the
identification, investigation and integration of new algorithms,
approaches, architectures, methods and mechanisms to enable proper and
efficient operation of a next-generation IP-based wireless network.
Special emphasis will be given to next-generation traffic issues, it
indeed remains true that much uncertainty surrounds the future traffic
features and volumes, mainly because of converged type of traffic
resulted from converged network operation under converged services and
applications. Moreover, wireless access networks and their interaction
shall be widely examined and addressed throughout the conference.
Since the middle of the 1990s a sequence of seminars and conferences
sponsored by International Teletraffic Congress (ITC) have been
successfully organized in Saint-Petersburg. The meeting point between
east and west, the mutual history and experience can be seen and felt

More information at http://www2007.org/registration.php
5. The Banff Springs Hotel awaits you
-------------------------------------
If you are planning to attend WWW2007, please think seriously about
making your hotel reservation soon. Hotel rooms are at a premium in
Banff in the summer, both in price and availability. A large petroleum
industry conference (http://www.piass.org) will make it even harder to
find hotel rooms in Banff next May.
The main WWW2007 room block is at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. We
encourage as many of you as possible to stay there, perhaps sharing a
room if necessary. The room block is open now for booking.
The Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel is located in a spectacular setting
in the Rocky Mountains, just above the Bow Falls, and within walking
distance of downtown Banff. The main view from the hotel is across the
valley and towards Mount Rundle.
The hotel, built over a century ago by the Canadian Pacific Railway in
a Scottish baronial style, marked the beginning of the tourism boom
for Banff National Park. Today, it retains its historic elegance and
magnificent views of the Bow River and surrounding peaks, but now
includes modern amenities that make for a luxurious lodging
experience, including a world-class spa, 10 restaurants and bars, golf
course, tennis courts, pool, and gym. High speed Internet access is
also available.
The Banff Springs is a one-of-a-kind hotel in a truly breathtaking
setting. And yes, the conference rate of $279 CDN per night (plus
service charges and taxes) is really a fabulous deal. Check it out!

CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications
Advances in Peer-to-Peer Streaming Systems
Peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing, emerging with Napster in 1999, has become
increasingly popular, accounting for as much as 70% of Internet traffic by
some estimates. Along with the widespread adoption of broadband
residential access and the increasing demand of multimedia service over
the Internet, we are now witnessing the emergence of a new class of
popular P2P applications, namely, P2P audio and video streaming. Popular
P2P video streaming applications have successfully demonstrated the
support of thousands of concurrent peers per channel at bit rates in
excess of 400 kbps. While traditional P2P file distribution applications
are targeted for elastic data transfers, P2P streaming focuses on the
efficient delivery of audio and video content under tight timing
requirements. Still in its infancy, both live and on-demand P2P streaming
present many research challenges.
To date, a number of architectures have been suggested by using either the
tree-based push approach (e.g., Narada and SplitStream) or the mesh-based
pull approach (e.g., CoolStream) which basically divides the media content
into blocks for trading among peers. Further improvements are possible by
taking advantage of advanced source and channel coding techniques such as
layered coding, multiple description codes, fountain codes, and network
coding. Given the initial success of P2P live streaming, questions still
remain about how to extend the existing peer-to-peer models for more
advanced applications with more stringent requirements such as
video-on-demand services and how to support live and on-demand streaming
in the same P2P network. Furthermore, with the wide deployment of wireless
networks (WLAN, ad hoc, and 3G networks) and various wireless backhaul
technologies (wireless mesh networks and WiMax), there are still open
research challenges on how to realize a large-scale P2P media streaming
over highly dynamic wireless channels and with user mobility.
This special issue solicits original state-of-the-art works addressing all
aspects related to supporting peer-to-peer multimedia content distribution
service from both theoretical and implementation aspects. It aims at
putting together a collection of the latest high-quality research results
in this area. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Novel live or on-demand P2P streaming architectures
* Traffic measurement and deployment experience
* Topology design and locality aware P2P system
* Performance evaluation and analysis
* Applications of advanced coding techniques
* Security issues
* Routing and QoS provisioning
* Digital rights management
* Content partitioning and block scheduling algorithms
* Wireless P2P streaming
* Peer-matching algorithms for efficient media distribution
* Cross-layer design

WORKSHOP
ORGANIC COMPUTING - TOOLS, APPLICATIONS AND ARCHITECTURES
March 15, 2007, ETH Zürich
Organic Computing has emerged as a challenging vision for future
information processing systems. Organic Computing is based on the
insight that in the near future we will be surrounded by large
collections of autonomous systems equipped with sensors and actuators to
be aware of their environment, to communicate freely, and to organize
themselves in order to support people at work and in their everyday
life. This
presence of networks of intelligent systems in our environment opens
fascinating application areas but, at the same time, bears the problem
of their controllability. Hence, we have to construct these systems -
which we increasingly depend on - as robust, safe, flexible, and
trustworthy as possible. In particular, a strong orientation of these
systems towards human needs as opposed to a pure implementation of the
technologically possible seems absolutely central. In order to achieve
these goals, our technical systems will have to act more independently,
flexibly, and autonomously, i.e. they will have to exhibit life-like
properties. We call those systems "organic". Hence, an "Organic
Computing System" is a technical system, which adapts dynamically to the
current conditions of its environment. It will be self-organizing,
self-configuring, self-healing, self-protecting, self-explaining, and
context-aware.
The vision of Organic Computing and its fundamental concepts arose
independently in different research areas like Neuroscience, Molecular
Biology, and Computer Engineering. Central aspects of Organic Computing
systems have been and will be inspired by an analysis of information
processing in biological systems. The focus of this OC workshop will be
on technical applications, tools and architectures for organic computing
systems.
Workshop topics
- tools and toolboxes for organic computing
- organic computing applications
- architectures for organic computing
- self-X in production systems
- complex adaptive systems
- technical usage and controllability of emergence
