Infrastructureless networks include both wireless ad hoc networks and sensor networks as important classes. Dependability issues such as reliability, availability, quality of service and security are made more challenging by the wireless and infrastructureless environment. Reliability and availability challenges include the varying characteristics of a wireless channel, which is subject to interference, fading, and multipath effects. General quality of service mechanisms become even more important due to bandwidth and other resource limitations. Challanges such as dealing with partitioned operation have led to new research areas such as delay-tolerant networking. The presence of mobile nodes in many of these settings complicates further the dependability issues. Clearly, these dependability challenges must be met before the full promise of ad hoc and sensor networks can be realized. GOAL AND TOPICS The main goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers to focus exclusively on the important topic of dependability issues in ad hoc and sensor networks, to outline its specific and unique research challenges, and to identify some of the most promising candidate solution methods and techniques to address those challenges. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: - Adaptive network protocols - Distributed algorithms for dependability - Network lifetime modeling and evaluation - Impact of mobility on dependability - Dependability case studies - QoS adaptation - Fault-tolerant and/or secure routing - Dependability techniques for resource constrained environments - Space-time routing - Network-level techniques for mitigating unreliable wireless links - Countering denial of service and energy-draining attacks - Dependable and secure services - Coverage and connectivity problems - Security against physical attacks - Data availability and consistency - Error-tolerant data aggregation in sensor networks - Handling network partitions - Delay-tolerant networking - Mobility-assisted routing SUBMISSIONS Papers should be written in English, must conform to the proceedings publication format (ACM Conference Style) and should not exceed eight pages, including text, references, figures and appendices. The proliferation and deployment of radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless LANs, and Wireless PANs with distinguishing characteristics of data rate, coverage range, power, mobility, and prices will clearly lead to a need for seamless and ubiquitous access across these various networks. Such an integrated heterogeneous environment enables a user to access a particular network depending upon the application needs and the types of radio access networks (RANs) available (e.g., cellular network, ad hoc, WLAN, WPAN etc). The heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks, on the other hand, provide unlimited mobility and greater flexibility but introduce a number of challenges due to dynamic network topology. The design of efficient and scalable protocols for existing multi-hop wireless and mobile networks such as wireless and mobile ad hoc networks continue to pose challenges at all the layers of networking stack. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate a global heterogeneous architecture and services that together provide seamless integration of single-hop networks (e.g., cellular, WLAN, WWAN) and multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks. The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the latest research and future research directions in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. We are seeking original and previously unpublished research papers addressing theoretical and application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless mobile networks. By allowing peers serving each other in the network, p2p technology overcomes many limitations in traditional client-server paradigm to achieve user and bandwidth scalabilities. It has been shown that performance of a properly-designed p2p network actually improves, rather than deteriorates, with the increase of population size. Peer-to-Peer technology is promising for large content distribution as demonstrated by a number of proof-of-concept prototypes in both academia and companies. In a p2p multimedia streaming system, multimedia contents are delivered to a large pool of distributed users with low delay, high quality and high robustness. Fueled by advances in networking and compression technologies, p2p multimedia streaming has experienced much initial deployment success for applications such as Internet TV (IPTV), video conferencing, and surveillance. It is the key to address the emerging needs of large-scale digital IPTV, interactive videos, interactive games and other next-generation broadcast-based or personalized multimedia services. A scalable peer-to-peer multimedia system should support many hosts, possibly in excess of hundreds or even millions, with diverse heterogeneity in bandwidth, capability, storage, network, and mobility. It should also be able to support various applications under dynamic user arrival and departure, frequent host failures and unavailability, and unpredictable user behaviors, network traffic and congestion. In a p2p streaming networks, users should be able to share, search, and access contents in a distributed and efficient manner. To achieve these goals, it is particularly important to address the challenges in architecture design, network/transport support, resource discovery and content delivery mechanisms. Scope of Contributions ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ This feature issue is devoted to original surveys and tutorials on these emerging issues in P2P streaming. Yet, issues like efficient mobility management and optimizations, locator-identifier split, multi-homing, security and related operational/deployment concerns are still in their early stages of development. Moreover, the Internet architecture, its end-to-end principles and business models will require rethinking due to the massive penetration of mobility into the Internet. The MobiArch'06 workshop solicits papers, both from researchers and practitioners, dealing with architectures, protocols, and experiences with emerging technologies on mobility support in the Internet, with an emphasis on new mobility protocols, mobility and location management, mobile network performance, multi-homing, security, architectural impacts and deployment considerations. The workshop will include presentations and discussions of accepted technical papers, as well as invited talks and panel sessions. Our apologies for duplicate postings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS - LOCAN 2006 2nd International Workshop on Localized Communication and Topology Protocols for Ad hoc Networks in conjunction with MASS-2006 (www.ieee-mass.org) Vancouver, Canada, October 9 - 12, 2006 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUBJECT AND SCOPE ----------------- This workshop covers comprehensively the algorithmic issues in the hot area of ad hoc and sensor networking. The design of data communication techniques in multi-hop ad hoc networks has challenges at all layers of communication. This workshop concentrates on the network layer problems like data communication (routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor elimination, etc.). Additionally, sensor networks are currently recognized as one of the priority research areas by NSF. The area of sensor networking is gaining momentum within the research community. This workshop will address ongoing research on this field, including problems such as: physical properties, sensor training, security through intelligent node cooperation, medium access, sensor area coverage with random and deterministic placement, object location, sensor position determination, energy efficient broadcasting and activity scheduling, routing, connectivity, data dissemination and gathering, sensor centric quality of routing, temporal message ordering, path exposure, tree reconfiguration, topology construction, and transport layer. The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple local node behaviour achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan. Sensor and rooftop/mesh networks, for instance, have hundreds or thousands of nodes. The main objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Medium access control * Analytical, mobility and validation models for ad hoc networks * Hybrid networks and wireless Internet * Security in ad hoc networks * Data management issues, query processing, and data delivery * Routing, broadcasting and multicasting in ad hoc networks * Energy-efficient protocols for ad hoc networks * Quality of service in medium access control and routing * Topology construction and maintenance in ad hoc networks * Neighborhood discovery and mobility management IMPORTANT DATES --------------- Manuscript Submission: June 26, 2006 Acceptance Notification: July 19, 2006 Final Manuscript Due: August 10, 2006 PAPER SUBMISSION ---------------- Papers must not exceed 10 single-spaced and two-column pages using at least 10 point size type on 8.5 x 11 inches pages.
