February 2020, 11:00, in IZ161 Prof. Alexey Vinel School of Information Technology, Halmstad University, Sweden Title: "Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications for Platooning: Safety Analysis" Abstract Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication is the key technology enabling platooning. We propose an analytical framework that combines the characteristics of V2V communication (packet loss probabilities and packet transmission delays) with the physical mobility characteristics of vehicles (speed, distance between vehicles and their brake capacities). First, we present the feasible region of communications delays which guarantees safe emergency braking in platooning scenarios. Second, we derive a bound on the probability of safe braking. The presented framework is applied to understand the performance of the state-of-the-art V2V communication protocol for platooning. Bio Alexey Vinel has been a Professor with the School of Information Technology, Halmstad University, Halmstad, Sweden, since 2015, and a Professor II with the Department of Computer science, Electrical engineering and Mathematical sciences, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, Bergen, Norway, since 2018. He received the Ph.D. degrees from Institute for Information Transmission Problems, Moscow, Russia, in 2007, and from the Tampere University of Technology, Tampere, Finland, in 2013. His research interests include wireless communications, vehicular networking and autonomous driving.

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, am 27.04.2018 von 15:00 bis 16:30 im IZ 161 findet das Informatik-Kolloquium statt. Referent ist Herr Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernhard Preim von der Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg. Dort lehrt und forscht er am Institut für Simulation und Graphik an der Fakultät für Informatik. Sein Schwerpunkt liegt in der medizinischen Informatik. Das Thema seines Vortrages lautet Visual Analytics in Public Health. Kolloquiumsvortrag 13:00 am Mi. 7.2.2018 im IZ161 Prof. Christian Renner (TU Hamburg-Harburg) Smart Ports and Beyond --- Facets and Research Challenges Recent advances in sensing, actuating and communication technology have led to the development of cyber-physical systems, subsequently enabling a smarter world. Smart cities and smart production lanes are examples of this new technological process. This development has already triggered worldwide demands in port areas, where the right balance between economy, available resources and ecology is a key issue. The underlying benefits of a smart port range from more efficient traffic management over monitoring and controlling of goods, supply chains and work flows towards easier inspections and operations in the port basin. Research challenges involved are, e.g., the (regenerative) energy supply of sensors and actuators, medium access and network traffic control in densely colocated wireless networks and underwater vehicles, as well as control of autonomous transportation and inspection vessels. This talk will first sketch the facets and challenges of smart ports and their realization before it will turn to relevant research projects already in progress and those planned for the near future at the research group smartPORT. ---------------- Christian Renner is a Juniorprofessor (assistant professor) and head of the research group smartPORT at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) since April 2016. He was born in Winsen/Luhe and grew up in the village Ramelsloh near Hamburg. He studied Computer Science and Engineering from 2003 to 2008 at TUHH, spending one semester at ETH Zürich. He received his Diploma degree (Dipl.-Ing.) in 2008 from TUHH. Christian pursued his doctoral studies at the Institute of Telematics at TUHH from 2008 until 2012. He received his Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.) in 2013. >From 2012 to 2016, he worked as a lecturer and post doctoral researcher at the Institute of Computer Engineering of the University of Lübeck. His research interests include applications of networked sensing and embedded systems, particularly aiming at energy harvesting and networking aspects, and mobile underwater swarm robotics with a special focus on underwater acoustic communication. He is covering both algorithmic and electronic aspects. Christian has been a coach and organizer for programming competitions related to the ACM ICPC from 2009 to 2012. He has been a reviewer for International journals and conferences and has organized several workshops. He has published over 40 scientific papers. Christian is an alumnus of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes. He was awarded the Diploma Prize by the Stiftung zur Förderung der TU Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH Foundation). His dissertation thesis was nominated for the disseration award of the GI (Gesellschaft für Informatik) and awarded the Karl-Heinz-Ditze Prize of TUHH. He received the Walter Dosch Teaching Award from the University of Lübeck.

Unter akutem Kostendruck werden diese Maßnahmen oft minimiert, was in der Vergangenheit zur Ausweitung von Bestandsschäden führte – salopp gesagt sind viele Brücken in Deutschland marode. In mehreren Projekten wird deshalb untersucht, wie man Informationstechnologie – konkret drahtlose Sensornetze – einsetzen kann, um die Überwachung von Brücken zumindest teilweise zu automatisieren. Dabei wird Sensorik sowohl dazu verwendet, um Umwelteinflüsse wie Verkehr und Wetter auf die Brücke zu erfassen, als auch, um Schäden möglichst frühzeitig festzustellen. In diesem Vortrag werden zwei Projekte aus diesem Umfeld vorgestellt. Das Projekt „iBAST“ hatte zum Ziel, verschiedene Sensor- und Sensornetztechnologien auf ihre Einsetzbarkeit im beschriebenen Umfeld hin zu untersuchen. Dabei entstandenen diverse Prototypen, mit denen Erfahrungen gesammelt werden konnten. Im Projekt „Intelligente Brücke“ werden nun mehrere unterschiedliche Ansätze in und an einer konkreten Autobahnbrücke verbaut und integriert. Der Vortrag präsentiert die verschiedenen Komponenten des Systems und die Ergebnisse der Anwendung.

Therefore, it is important that protocols transfer the most relevant data when contacts do occur. I talk about our insights from Haggle, a system for opportunistic content sharing, focusing on how search can be leveraged for relevance aware dissemination. Unlike other mobile content sharing systems, Haggle prioritises content based on how relevant it is to users, and allows highly desirable content to propagate faster than less desirable content. I also highlight the opportunities arising from multi-node contacts. Multi-Node contacts encounters warrant a more holistic view of routing decisions, where more factors than just the features of a message-node tuple can be considered. We discuss these aspects and propose a protocol addition to leverage multi-contact opportunities with the notion of heterogeneous link quality, in order to limit energy consumption. Christian Rohner is professor in Computer Systems at Uppsala University. His research interests include system aspects in mobile opportunistic networks, energy efficiency in networked embedded systems, and wireless security. He has been the lead of the Haggle architecture. Christian has a PhD in computer science and a diploma in electrical engineering, both from ETH Zürich.

Recently, for example, hackers stole 500 million (sic!) passwords from Yahoo's email service. After briefly talking about the current state of cyber-security, I will be analyzing the current software ecosystem and identify a fundamental flaw: the software monoculture. I will then illustrate return-oriented programming (ROP) and show how software diversity effectively mitigates this attack vector. In addtion I will cover important next steps: adaptive diversification to reduce performance impact and active defenses as a new capability.
