Symposium Background and CFP:
The explosive increasing in wireless packet-data applications, such as
wireless web browsing, real-time mobile multimedia streaming, and
interactive applications motivates the rapid development of the
next-generation mobile wireless networks. The associated communication
channels and traffic patterns in mobile wireless networks are more
unpredictable than the traditional wire-line networks. On the other hand,
the future multimedia applications impose stringent and diverse Quality of
Service (QoS) requirements, which cannot be satisfactorily addressed
through the traditional layering network-protocol architecture.
Correspondingly, a cross-layer design paradigm would be needed to achieve
transmission protocol stack performance while meeting these new challenges
in QoS requirements. The cross-layer designs and protocols tend to be very
essential approaches for the mobile wireless and ad hoc networks where
unpredictable variables such as node mobility, node density, network
dimensions make the diverse and stringent wireless QoS requirements even
harder to satisfy. Cross-layer designs and protocols are the emerging
research areas where some early results have recently been reported in the
literatures, but the upcoming new applications and more stringent/diverse
wireless QoS requirements open even more new opportunities for many
interesting and comprehensive research topics targeting at concepts,
methodologies, and techniques to support the future advanced mobile
wireless applications. Clearly, the developments of the new schemes,
mechanisms, and systems associated with the cross-layer designs and
protocols will have a significant impact on the next generation of mobile
wireless communications and networks.
Scope of Contributions:
The focuses of the papers to be published in the
IEEE International Cross-Layer Designs and Protocols Symposium will
concentrate on the state-of-the-art research in various aspects of
cross-layer designs and protocols for the next-generation mobile
wireless communications networks. We solicit the original papers
covering various topics of interest that include, but not limited to the
following areas:
Methodologies for cross-layer protocol design in mobile wireless networks
Cross-layer strategies for wireless multimedia communications
Cross-layer error and delay control
Cross-Layer Optimization for Energy, Network Lifetime, and Capacity
Communication Networks and Layered Network Architectures
Complexity and Scalability Issues in Cross-Layer Design
Physical Layer Information for MAC/Radio Link Control (RLC) Protocols
Signaling for Cross-Layer Protocol Interaction
QoS and Radio Resource Management in Layered Networks
Channel Access Algorithms for Cross-Layered Wireless Networks

First International Workshop on Personalized Networks
To be held in conjunction with:
The 3rd Annual International Conference on Mobile and
Ubiquitous Systems: Networks and Services (MOBIQUITOUS 2006)
July 17-21, 2006 - San Jose, California, USA
http://www.wmc.ewi.tudelft.nl/~martin/pnets/
============================================================
Important Dates
Paper Submission Deadline: April 1, 2006
Notification of Acceptance: May 8, 2006
Camera-Ready Submissions: May 31, 2006
(Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings and the
IEEE Digital Library)
=============================================================
Purpose of this workshop
The ubiquitous nature of wireless networks has spawned many interesting
applications that were unimagined hitherto. It has also brought many
challenges for the communication and networking community to ponder. On
the one hand, we see present day mobile devices capable of providing
many integrated services that only yesterday required several different
devices. For instance, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data
access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances
in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless
hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With
increased user mobility and the desire to always be connected, we have
seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area
Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully
for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand, the
Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two
major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we
communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future
communication vehicle.
(Please visit http://www.wmc.ewi.tudelft.nl/~martin/pnets/ for more
information and submission instructions)
Scope of the submission
We seek original contributions which are aimed at finding solutions to
the problems outlined above towards a Personalized Network. We have
identified the following major topics under which we try to categorize
the submissions. However, we will consider any other original,
interesting, and imaginative ideas and thoughts towards meeting the goal
of a Personalized Network.
* Addressing and routing
* Architectural framework of personalized networks
* Context-aware and application-driven communication substrates
* Dependability
* Handling of QoS across heterogeneous and dynamically changing link layers
* Innovative applications or prototypes and demonstrations of
person-centric
applications
* Interactions between persons through their networks, federations of
such
networks
* Interworking between PANs, ad hoc networks, etc, and infrastructure-based
heterogeneous networks
* Mapping of functional requirements to physical devices and resources
* Modeling and simulation of personalized networks
* Mobility of personalized networks
* Multimedia services for personalized networks
* New QoS concepts in personalized networks
* P2P paradigm in personalized networks
* Resource, service and context discovery
* Security, privacy and accounting
* Self-organization and adaptation
* Zero configuration methods and other enablers for ease-of-use
Why should you participate in this workshop?
Personalized Networks is a concrete vision of the future networks, which
attracts researchers from both wired and wireless domains. This workshop
is an ideal platform to share a vision of where we are heading,
interact, and strongly advocate an exciting new avenue for researchers
and practitioners in the field of communication. Further, the final
program would consist of carefully selected - with at least three peer
reviews - and high quality submissions with a large emphasis on new
ideas rather than incremental contributions to the field. Submissions of
shorter versions of full papers that can be submitted to other
conferences/journal in the near future are discouraged.

The 3rd International Conference on
Ubiquitous Intelligence and Computing (UIC-06)
- Building Smart Worlds on Real and Cyber Spaces -
http://grid.hust.edu.cn/uic06/
Organized by Huazhong Univ. of Sci. and Tech. (HUST)
Co-Sponsored by HUST, NSFC, 863, ChinaGrid, IFIP
In Cooperation with the IEEE Computer Society (Applying)
Wuhan and Three Gorges, China, September 3-6, 2006
******************************************************
Following ubiquitous computers, networks, information,
services, etc., is a road towards a smart world (SW)
created on both real and cyber spaces. A SW is mainly
characterized by ubiquitous intelligence (UI) or
computational intelligence pervasive in the physical world,
filled with ubiquitous intelligent or smart things,
that are capable of computing, communicating, and behaving
smartly with some intelligence. One of the profound implications
of such ubiquitous smart things is that various kinds and
levels of intelligence will exist ubiquitously in
everyday objects, environments, systems and even ourselves,
and possibly be extended from man-made to natural things.
"Ubicomp" or "percomp" can be regarded as the computing of
all these intelligent/smart things/u-things, that are
essential elements and components of the SW.
A smart thing can be endowed with different levels of
intelligence, and may be context-aware, active, interactive,
reactive, proactive, assistive, adaptive, automated, sentient,
perceptual, cognitive, autonomic and/or thinking.
Intelligent/smart things is an emerging research field
covering many disciplines. A series of grand challenges exist
to move from the ubiquitous world with universal services of
any means/place/time to the SW of trustworthy services with the
right means/place/time. UIC-06 is a successor of the 2nd Int'l
Symposium on Ubiquitous Intelligence and Smart Worlds (UISW2005,
Japan, Dec. 2005) which succeeds the 1st Int'l Workshop on
Ubiquitous Smart Worlds (USW2005,Taipei, Mar. 2005). It offers
a forum for researchers to exchange ideas and experiences in
developing intelligent/smart objects, environments, and systems
as well as discuss various personal/social/physical issues
faced by UI and SWs.
Topics include but are not limited to the following:
1. Ubiquitous Intelligent/Smart Objects
* Electronic Label, Card, E-Tag and RFID
* Embedded Chips, Sensor & Actuator
* MEMS, NEMS, Mote & Biometric Device
* Everyday Good, Artifact, Robot, etc.
* Smart Appliance and Wearable Device
* Material, Textile, Cloth, Furniture, etc.
* Emerging Intelligent/Smart Objects
* Embedded Software and Agents
2. Ubiquitous Intelligent/Smart Environments
* Room, Home, Office, Laboratory, etc.
* Building, Library, School, Campus, etc.
* Shop, Clinic, Hospital and Health Care
* Street, Yard, Park, Ground, City, etc.
* Vehicle, Road, Traffic & Transportation
* Land, Pool, Space and Hyperspace
* Learning, Sport, Entertainment, etc.
* Novel Intelligent/Smart Applications
3. Ubiquitous Intelligent/Smart Systems
* Sensor, Ad Hoc & Intelligent Networks
* Knowledge Representation and Ontology
* Wearable, Personal and Body Area Systems
* OS, Middleware and Intelligent Association
* Intelligent Service Architecture, Grid & Mesh
* Massive Agents, Swarm/Amorphous Systems
* Proactive, Autonomic and Organic Systems
* Novel Intelligent/Smart Systems
4. Personal/Social/Physical Aspects
