PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
MED HOC NET 2006
The Fifth Annual
MEDITERRANEAN AD HOC NETWORKING
Workshop
http://www.medhoc.diit.unict.it/2006/
June 14-17 2006
Lipari, Italy
************************************************************
Ad hoc networks have attracted the attention of the research
community in the last several years. Now that some of the
fundamental issues and challenges of ad hoc networking have
been clearly assessed, the focus is partially shifting to
new issues, which include application scenarios (road
safety, disaster recovery, sensors and actuators, etc.),
autonomous Organization and operation, optimization and
control, service creation and support, middleware. Moreover,
wireless MESH networking is emerging as an "ad hoc spin-off"
aimed at extending and integrating the multi-hop paradigm
with more traditional networking, which poses new and
exciting technical challenges.
Med-Hoc-Net 2006 is the major annual international workshop
aiming to serve as a platform for researchers and
visionaries from academia, research labs, and industry from
all over the world. Sharing ideas, views, results, and
experiences in the field of wireless multi-hop networking is
what Med-Hoc-Net 2006 intends to be about. Anything from
theoretical and experimental achievements, to innovative ad
hoc systems, prototyping efforts, and case studies is of
interest to the Med-Hoc-Net community.
The papers solicited in Med-Hoc-Net 2006 cover a variety of
topics related to ad hoc and MESH networks, including but
not limited to:
- Novel multi-hop wireless network architectures
- Routing algorithms and protocols
- MAC protocols, scheduling, power control and radio
resource sharing
- Transport layer protocols for multi-hop networks
- Middleware for ad hoc networks
- Application driven architectures and protocols
- Sensor network applications and protocols
- Vehicular networks
- Integration of ad hoc networks with wireless access
networks
- Implementations, testbeds, and prototypes
- Technology related issues (IEEE 802.11, Bluetooth, ZigBee,
IEEE 802.16, IEEE 802.20, etc.)
- Self organization and network reconfiguration
- Optimization models and algorithms
- Resource and service discovery
- Call admission and traffic shaping policies for ad-hoc
networks
- Use of advanced antenna technologies (MIMO, beam forming,
etc.)
- QoS support
- Security and privacy
The members of program committee will referee all papers,
and accepted papers will be published in the conference
proceedings. Papers of particular merit will be published in
the Elsevier Ad Hoc Networks journal.
Manuscripts must be formatted according to the IEEE

Journal of Computer Communications
(http://www.elsevier.com/locate/comcom)
Special Issue on "Sensor-Actuator Networks (SANETs)"
Sensor-Actuator NETworks (SANETs) are comprised of networked sensor
and actuator nodes that communicate among each other using wireless
links to perform distributed sensing and actuation tasks. The recent
few years have witnessed an increasing interest in the potential use
of SANETs in many applications ranging from healthcare to warfare.
In these applications, sensors are engaged in gathering information
about the physical environment, while actuators are involved in
taking decisions and then performing appropriate actions in the area
of interest. This enables SANETs to provide remote sensing and
actuation services to their users.
SANETs are heterogeneous networks having widely differing sensor
and actuator node characteristics; while sensor nodes are small,
inexpensive, usually static devices with limited computation,
communication and energy resources, actuator nodes are resource-rich
and usually mobile. Also, the number of sensor nodes deployed may be
in the order of hundreds or thousands. In contrast, actuator nodes
are smaller in number due to the different coverage requirements and
physical interaction methods of actuation. Typically, a deployed
SANET is expected to operate autonomously in unattended environments.
Operational requirements of SANETs may vary according to a network?s
mission defined over a multi-dimensional context, such as field of
deployment (e.g., hostile versus friendly), type of application
(e.g., monitoring, tracking, intrusion detection and mitigation),
mode of operation (e.g., normal, exception, post-event recovery),
and time. In SANETs, depending on the application, there may be a
need to rapidly respond to sensor input. Moreover, so as to provide
right actions, sensor data must still be valid at the time of
acting. Consequently, the issues of real-time communication and
coordination are vital in SANETs. Finally, to realize their
potential, dependable, secure, application-aware design and operation
of SANETs have to be ensured.
Apparently, research is needed to resolve the many complicating
issues that may impede wide-scale SANET adoption. This special issue
of the Journal of Computer Communications will be designated for
reporting on recent research results on SANETs. It is expected that
non-conventional techniques more suited to the characteristics of
SANETs need to be employed. Also, in many cases trade-off would be
necessary in order to ensure practicality by dynamically setting
bounds on aspects such as dependability, security, and QoS. Papers
presenting original and unpublished work are being solicited.
Topics of interest include, although not limited to, the following:
- Sensor-actuator coordination and communication
- Architectural and operational models
- Robust routing and MAC protocols
- Fault and attack resilience middleware
- Models, metrics and measurements
- Self-aware and autonomous networks
- Localization and mobility
- Energy-efficient cross-layer protocols
- Security, dependability, privacy and QoS issues
- Network management
- Formal representation and verification
- Network inference (tomography, etc.)
- Testbeds, simulation and visualization
- Novel applications of sensor and actuator networks
** Submission deadline: February 15 , 2006
** Decision notification: May 15, 2006
** Final manuscript due: July 31, 2006
** Publication date: 1st Quarter 2007
** Submission instructions:

Ad hoc networking technologies have big potentialities for
innovative applications of great impact on our everyday life.
To exploit these potentialities, simulation modeling and
theoretical analyses have to be complemented by real experiences
(e.g., measurements on real prototypes) which provide both a
direct evaluation of ad hoc networks and, at the same time,
precious information to realistically model these systems.
The need for more experimental activities stimulated a new
community of researchers combining theoretical research on
ad hoc networking with experiences/measurements obtained by
implementing ad hoc network prototypes. The aim of REALMAN is to
bring together this community. Following the success of the first
edition, this workshop constitutes a unique forum for presenting
and discussing measurement studies and experiences based on real
ad hoc network test-beds and prototypes.

WMCSA DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM
Important Dates:
03 Feb 2006, 5:00 PM (1700) PST: Submissions due.
24 Feb 2006: Acceptance notification.
The WMCSA 2006 Doctoral Consortium provides an opportunity for
doctoral students to explore and develop their research interests
in a small workshop format, under the guidance of a panel of
distinguished researchers. We invite students who feel they would
benefit from this kind of feedback on their dissertation work to
apply for this unique opportunity to share their work with students
in a similar situation as well as senior researchers in the field.
---------------
ABOUT THE DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM
The Consortium has the following objectives:
* Provide a supportive setting for feedback on students' current
research and guidance on future research directions.
* Offer each student comments and fresh perspectives on their work
from faculty and students outside their own institution.
* Promote the development of a supportive community of scholars
and a spirit of collaborative research.
* Contribute to the conference goals through interaction with other
researchers and conference events.
The Consortium will be held during an extended lunch on 6 April
(Friday). About three doctoral students and four faculty will be
invited to participate. Students will give a presentation providing
an overview of their work and results to date. Student participants
will have their abstracts published in the WMCSA 2006 Proceedings
and a poster of their work exhibited at the main conference.
---------------
APPLYING TO THE DOCTORAL CONSORTIUM
Submissions are invited from current graduate students pursuing a
PhD project who would benefit from detailed workshop discussions of
their doctoral research by a panel of established researchers.
Students are also expected to share in scribing, writing up
summaries of each talk and subsequent discussion, which will
be published in a relevant journal. These students will also get
free registration.
Submission materials consist of:
* an extended abstract (see below),
* a one-page biographical sketch,
* a one-paragraph statement of expected benefits of participation
(see below),
* a letter of recommendation from the student's primary dissertation
advisor (this can be sent separately, if desired)
All materials should be sent to jasonh at cs cmu edu (as a single
PDF file) by 3 February 2006, 5:00 PM (1700) PST. Your file should
be named lastname_dc.pdf, where lastname is your family name. The
file must be no larger than 5 Mbytes in size.
EXTENDED ABSTRACT
Prepare a two-page extended abstract of your thesis work,
including: title, author information, abstract, keywords,
thesis research summary, and references. This extended abstract,
if accepted for the Doctoral Consortium, will be published in
the WMCSA 2006 Post-proceedings. Thus it will be widely available
to conference delegates and those with access to ACM publications.
The extended abstract should clearly specify:
* the problem(s) that the research is addressing; the research
question(s) you are trying to answer.
* the expected contribution(s) of the research to mobility
* the proposed solution(s), including a brief description of the
methodology adopted (for example, with the scheme
Method-Results-Discussion for experimental studies), of the
current status, and of a tentative plan for future work.
STATEMENT OF EXPECTED BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATION
Prepare one paragraph explaining what specific guidance or other help
you expect to gain from participating in the consortium. For example,
are you looking for specific guidance on methods and approaches, help
in thinking through design issues, a forum to discuss empirical
phenomena, etc.

CALL FOR PAPERS
MobiCom 2006
The Twelfth Annual International Conference
on Mobile Computing and Networking
September 2006
Los Angeles, California, USA
http://www.sigmobile.org/mobicom/2006/
Sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE
ACM MobiCom 2006, the Twelfth Annual International Conference on Mobile
Computing and Networking, is the twelfth in a series of annual conferences
sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE dedicated to addressing the challenges in the
areas of mobile computing and wireless and mobile networking. The MobiCom
conference series serves as the premier international forum addressing
networks, systems, algorithms, and applications that support the symbiosis
of mobile computers and wireless networks. MobiCom is a highly selective
conference focusing on all issues in mobile computing and wireless and
mobile networking at the link layer and above. MobiCom 2006 will be held
in September 2006 in Los Angeles, California.
PAPERS: Authors are invited to submit full papers presenting new research
related to the theory or practice of mobile computing and networking. All
submissions must describe original research, not published or currently
under review for another conference or journal. Areas of interest include,
but are not limited to:
* Architectures, protocols, and algorithms to cope with mobility, limited
bandwidth, limited power and/or intermittent connectivity
* Applications and services for mobile users
* Fundamental aspects of mobile computing and wireless networking
* Implementations and experimental mobile systems
* Integration and interworking of wired and wireless networks
* Location-dependent applications and protocols
* Modeling, measurement and simulation aspects of mobile networks
* Mobile ad hoc and wireless sensor networks
* Operating system and middleware support for mobile computing and
networking
* Performance of mobile and wireless networks and systems
* Security, privacy, and fault-tolerance of mobile/wireless systems
* Wireless access technologies for mobile nodes (e.g. multi-radio and
mesh systems, personal area networks)
The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be
published in the conference proceedings.
HOT TOPIC PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission of
short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking
that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing
assumptions prevalent among the research community. These "hot topic
papers" should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up
exciting avenues and/or influence the direction of future research.
Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not
appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive
evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in depth
understanding of the issues is expected. Hot topic papers will be
reviewed by MobiCom program committee members, will be part of the
technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They
should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for
the full papers. The title of these papers must start with the word
"Hot Topic:" i.e., "Hot Topic: Rest of the Title."
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled
electronically. Authors should prepare a Portable Document Format (PDF)
or PostScript version of their full paper. Papers must be no longer than
12 pages (8 pages for "Hot Topic" papers), in font size no smaller than
10 points, and must fit properly on US "Letter"-sized paper (8.5x11 inches)
with reasonable margins. Detailed instructions on the paper submission
procedure and format will be available on the conference web pages. The
deadline for registering the title and the abstract of the paper with our
electronic submission system is March 10, 2006 and the deadline for
submitting the actual paper is March 17, 2006. All deadlines are
11:59PM EST.
All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through
double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld
from the reviewers. Authors' names must not appear in the paper or in the
PostScript or PDF file. Submitted papers (or substantially similar papers)
must not be currently under review for any other publication. Please
direct any questions about the paper submission process to the Program
Co-Chairs at mobicom_pcchairs(a)acm.org.
TUTORIALS: Proposals for tutorials are solicited. Evaluation of tutorial
proposals will be based on the expertise and experience of the instructors,
and on the relevance of the subject matter. Potential instructors are
requested to submit a tutorial proposal of at most 5 pages, including a
biographical sketch, to the Tutorial Co-Chairs.
PANELS: Panels are solicited that examine innovative, controversial,
or otherwise provocative issues of interest. Panel proposals should
not exceed 3 pages, including biographical sketches of the panelists.
Potential panel organizers should contact the Panel Co-Chairs.
RESEARCH DEMOS AND EXHIBITS: Proposals for research demos are solicited.
Proposals should not exceed 3 pages and should include a description of the
demo and equipment to be used. Send proposals to the Research Demo Chair.

$500USD for their conference travel, depending on need and
eligibility and will earn a chance to compete in the SRC Grand Finals
whose winners are recognized at the Annual ACM Awards Banquet.
Competitors should be prepared to attend the poster
session and, if selected for further competition, give a short talk
about their research projects. Winners will be announced at the
conference. The Student Research Competition is open to graduate and
undergraduate students whose submissions are accepted by the SRC
committee. To be considered, complete a submission to the Student
Poster Programme and indicate that you would like to participate in the
SRC. Current ACM student membership and student status as of the
submission deadline are required for the lead student.

Date: Tue, 10 Jan 2006 11:10:07 -0500
From: Michael Zink <zink(a)newworld.cs.umass.edu>
To: wolf(a)ibr.cs.tu-bs.de
Dear Colleagues,
this is a reminder that the DEADLINE for NOSSDAV 2006 is coming up
next month (Feb. 15)!
We wish you all the best for 2006!
Carsten Griwodz & Michael Zink
----------------------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
NOSSSDAV 2006
For sixteen years, NOSSDAV has fostered cutting-edge, state-of-the-art
research in multimedia and newly emerging areas such as networked games
and peer-to-peer streaming. The workshop environment encourages lively
discussion among participants and invites strong feedback for work in
progress. In 2006, NOSSDAV will be held in Newport, Rhode Island. The
beautiful harbor front location is home to sailing, beaches, golfing,
biking, and fishing.
NOSSDAV invites submissions on all areas of multimedia computing and
networking and strongly encourages work in progress in emerging areas.
Papers grounded in high-quality experimental research based on prototype
and real systems are highly valued. Additionally, papers proposing new
directions for research or calling into question existing conventional
wisdom are welcomed.
This year, NOSSDAV will give extra consideration to papers where the
source code to experimental or real systems is released. And, NOSSDAV
will also give extra consideration to papers that aim to comprehensively
validate previous work in some topic within multimedia.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Peer-to-peer streaming
* Networked games
* Sensor networks and architectures
* In-network stream processing
* Wireless and mobile multimedia systems
* 3D multimedia and tele-immersion
* Streaming 3D graphics and virtual worlds
* Application-level multicast
* Multimedia security
* Digital rights management
* Real-time operating system support for multimedia
* Multimedia middleware and frameworks
A broad view will be taken in deciding what topics are within scope.
Please feel free to contact the workshop co-chairs if you are unsure
and wish to check if a particular paper or topic is within the
workshop scope.
As always, student participation is strongly encouraged. To encourage
a good mix of seasoned researchers as well as students, we will be
offering discounted registration for student members who attend with
their faculty advisor.
Submissions (as well as the camera ready final versions of accepted
papers) should be no longer than 6 pages. We expect these submissions
to be the kernel of what will eventually lead to full-length papers
at high-quality conferences or journals.
Important Dates:
Paper registration: February 8, 2006 (5pm Eastern US)
Paper submission: February15, 2006 (5pm Eastern US)
Notification: April 5, 2006
Camera ready: April 19, 2006
Conference: May 22-23, 2006
