Call for Papers
IWSAWC 2006
6th International Workshop on
Smart Appliances and Wearable Computing
In conjunction with ICDCS 2006
July 4, 2006, Lisboa, Portugal
(Submission deadline January 15, 2006)
http://ubicomp.lancs.ac.uk/workshops/iwsawc2006
************************************************************************
Through recent technological development researchers are now able to embed
sensing, computation, communication and actuation in personal devices and
everyday artefacts giving them the possibility to create large scale systems
of interacting smart appliances, physical objects and wearable computers.
This penetration of computation in all aspects of everyday life and work
requires thorough exploration of new kinds of embedded and smart devices and
software infrastructures and architectures that support such large-scale
scenarios beyond the lab environment.
The diversity of systems, devices, services and applications and their
distributed nature raises important questions about collaboration between
system components. Appropriate solutions often have to take potential resource
limitations of connected devices and appliances into account.
Contextual awareness, digital representations of physical system components as
well as access methods and processing of distributed information are of
specific importance - especially as smart devices and objects along with their
services are seamlessly integrated in the real world to support users in their
daily living activities.
## Scope:
This workshop serves as a forum for the exchange of new findings in
collaborative technologies and smart appliances deployed in real world
environments. We intend to bring together practitioners from academia as well
as industry to present their most recent research in these rapidly moving
fields. Technical papers on smart appliances and collaborative technologies
are solicited for oral presentation at IWSAWC 2006. Papers reporting new
developments in computing with smart devices such as PDAs, wearable computers,
and cellular phones as well as new insights in instrumentation of everyday
artefacts and their infrastructures will be invited for presentation. Workshop
topics include but are not limited to:
- Enabling Technologies
- Collaboration Concepts
- Infrastructure Solutions
- Home and Office Appliances
- Novel Smart Objects
- Portable Devices and Smart Sensors
- Wireless-phone Computing
- Home Networks and Wearable Networks
- Networking Protocols
- Security and Privacy Aspects
- Wearable Computers and PDAs
- Software and Service Architectures
- Location and Context-Aware Computing
## Format:
Authors of accepted papers will be invited for oral presentation at the
workshop. There will also be a poster session provinding an opportunity for
researchers to present their planned, on-going or recently-finished work and
highlighting recent results in the field of Smart Appliances and Wearable
Computing. Presenters are encouraged to show additional demonstrations
facilitating the poster.
## Important Dates
***********************************************
Submission deadline: January 15, 2006
Notification of acceptance: February 29, 2006
Camera ready papers: March 29, 2006
***********************************************
## Paper Submission:
Technical papers should be submitted via the workshop webpage, not exceed a
maximum length of 6 two-column pages and include an abstract of 100-150 words.

First IEEE Workshop on advanced experimental activities on wireless networks
and systems
EXPONWIRELESS - 2006
http://netgroup.iet.unipi.it/EXPONWIRELESS/
26 June 2006 - Niagara-Falls, Buffalo, NY, USA
in conjunction with IEEE WoWMoM 2006 ( http://ieee-wowmom.cse.buffalo.edu/)
-------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
Wireless networks represent a challenging and ever growing research area. In
these systems the interactions among the different network layers are very
complex and their effects on the overall performance are not easy to
accurately identify. Experimental activities involving the development of
systems and device prototypes and the collection and analysis of
measurements from actual networks can provide an insight on the behaviour of
such systems in realistic environments, which can be beneficial for
understanding how cross-layer interactions impact in practice the overall
performance, for deriving realistic simulation models, for analyzing
particular phenomena and evaluating algorithms and protocols, and for
exploring the design choices in building actual wireless networks. Such
activities are pivotal for researchers, developers, service managers and
providers, as well as for end users involved in the evolution of these
networks.
EXPONWIRELESS aims at bringing together all the aspects related to
experimental achievements on wireless networks, creating a forum where
researchers, vendors, providers and users can exchange ideas on past
experience, current requirements, and future visions, useful for the
development of new protocols, algorithms, devices and systems.
High quality papers discussing original and innovative experimental
activities on wireless networks are solicited for submission. The main
topics of the workshop are (but are not limited to):
. Device prototypes for wireless BANs, PANs, LANs, and MANs
. QoS for real-time voice and video in wireless networks
. Differentiated services in wireless multimedia networks
. IP-based multimedia services over wireless networks
. Multi-hop Multi-radio wireless mesh networks
. Handoff and mobility management in beyond-3G systems
. Seamless internetworking
. Systems and methods for collecting and analyzing measurements in wireless
networks
. Architectures for beyond-3G systems
. Energy-efficient protocols and power management algorithms
. Wireless security
. Wireless ad-hoc networks
. Wireless sensor networks

mesh-based mobile networks, where an end-to-end path from the source to
the destination always exists. In many application scenarios, however, the
connectivity between the mobile stations is poor, and thus it is difficult
to form a well-connected mesh network for transmitting data through
end-to-end connections. In this workshop we aim to explore novel designs
for such delay tolerant mobile networks and bring together
state-of-the-art contributions in this emerging area.
Topic of Interests: Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the
following:
* New architecture of delay tolerant mobile networks
* New design of protocol stack for delay tolerant mobile networks
* Delay and fault tolerance in mobile peer-to-peer and sensor networks
* Mobility management and modeling
* Security and privacy
* Localization and synchronization
* System modeling and performance evaluation
* Testbed implementation and experimental results
Submission deadline: Jan. 15, 2006.

Conference Date: 17. - 21.09.2006
Conference Venue: Marriott Newport Beach, Orange County, California
Hosted by:
Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences
University of California, Irvine
Overview:
=========
Ubicomp is the premier international forum for research in ubiquitous
computing, bringing together designers, computer scientists, social
scientists, and artists, to discuss recent developments and future advance.
Orange County is located in coastal Southern California, south of Los Angeles
and north of San Diego. Typical September weather is sunny and dry with
temperatures around 25C.
We invite you to submit original, high-quality research contributions in all
program categories, including full papers, demonstrations, posters, videos,
and the doctoral colloquium.
Contributions on all topics related to ubiquitous computing are welcome,
including:
* tools and techniques for designing, implementing, & evaluating ubiquitous
computing systems
* mobile, wireless, and ad hoc networking infrastructures for ubiquitous computing
* laboratory and in situ studies of ubiquitous computing technologies in use
* location-aware and context-based systems for ubiquitous computing
* privacy, security, and trust in ubiquitous and pervasive systems.
The UbiComp conference has traditionally had a strong workshop program.
Workshops allow small groups to gather for intensive discussion around focused
topics of interest. The goal of workshops is to share understandings and
experiences, to foster research communities, to learn from each other and to
envision future directions.
NOTE: Ubicomp 2006 will have two days for workshops.
Important Dates and Deadlines:
==============================
03/31/2006: Paper and workshop proposals
06/16/2006: Demos and videos
08/18/2006: Early registration
09/17-21/2006: Conference
Call for Papers:
================
Ubicomp 2006 welcomes original, high-quality research contributions in the
area of ubiquitous, pervasive and handheld computing systems and their
applications. This conference seeks to present novel research results
impacting the design and usage of ubiquitous computing technology that
migrates beyond the desktop. Submissions should report original research that
contributes to our understanding of ubiquitous computing and help advance the
state of the art. Examples of appropriate areas of inquiry include:
Improving natural interaction (e.g. applied sensing, fusion and reasoning, AI
and speech technologies for Ubicomp, increasing machine understanding of human
action & vice versa)
Constructing ubicomp systems (e.g., systems and toolkit support for
constructing, maintaining and deploying and prototyping Ubicomp environments)
Embedding computation (e.g. novel user interfaces, computational and sensing/
actuator platforms, assistive technolgies, applied to Ubicomp)
Understanding ubicomp and its consequences (e.g. conceptual models, lessons
learnt, user studies and results from Ubicomp experiments)
Deploying ubicomp technologies (e.g. privacy, security, and trust, real-world
and deployment experiences, studies of ubicomp settings)
Ubicomp 2006 seeks papers that reflect the full breadth and scope of
ubiquitous computing research, including conceptual development, empirical
investigations, technological advances, application experiences, and more.
Authors should write for the broader Ubicomp audience, however, and make clear
how their work contributes to the whole.
Papers will be evaluated on the basis of originality, significance of the
contribution to the field, technical correctness and presentation. Papers
submitted must not have been previously published or be under simultaneous
review for any other conference, journal, workshop or other publication. We
solicit papers up to 18 pages but explicitly welcome shorter papers. All paper
submissions will be treated as full papers, but it is important that their
length is appropriate for their content. Papers should be formatted according
to the Springer Verlag LNCS format. Accepted papers will be included in the
conference proceedings published by Springer-Verlag as Lecture Notes in
Computer Science (LNCS). Authors are required to attend the conference to
present their work.
Paper submissions must be anonymized to facilitate blind review. Authors are
encouraged to take care throughout the entire document to minimize references
that may reveal the identity of the authors or
their institutions. Relevant references to an author's previous research
should not be suppressed but instead referenced in a neutral way.
All paper submissions will be handled electronically by the EDAS system. Note
that submission is a two-stage process - authors need to register their paper
first and then submit the final manuscript. Submissions must be in Adobe PDF
format and conform to the guidelines specified in the call for papers. Authors
without EDAS user names will be required to register with the system using the
same link as
above.
Reviewers will be instructed to maintain the confidentiality of all materials
for submitted papers throughout the entire reviewing process. Submissions
should contain no information that will be proprietary or confidential at the
time of publication.
