CALL FOR PAPERS
SAHNS 2009
The Second International Workshop on
Specialized Ad Hoc Networks and Systems
Montreal, Canada, June 26, 2009
http://www.cs.wmich.edu/~alfuqaha/SAHNS2009/
In conjunction with the IEEE 29th International Conference
on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS 2009)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. SCOPE
The Workshop provides a forum for engineers and scientists in
academia, industry and government to present their latest research
findings in specialized ad-hoc networks and systems.
As an alternative to one-size-fits-all general solutions in the area
of ad hoc networking and systems, we want to stimulate the
application-oriented divide-and-conquer approach to ad hoc network
and system research. The goal is to provide sound and efficient
specialized ad hoc networks and systems (SAHNS), suitable for
building solutions specific for well-defined classes of applications
or even individual applications.
We want to consider both specialized ad hoc networks and specialized
ad hoc systems. The latter can be built on top of specialized ad hoc
networks. Alternatively, they can be constructed independently of
specialized ad hoc networks, e.g., on top of general-purpose ad hoc
networks.
It should be emphasized that SAHNS is interested only in solutions
specific to specialized ad hoc networks and systems. The Workshop is
not interested in broad general-purpose solutions for all ad hoc
networks and systems, or in generic solutions for extremely broad
subclasses of ad hoc networks and systems. For example, the Workshop
is not interested in general-purpose solutions for all sensornets or
all P2P systems but is instead interested in specialized solutions
for their application-oriented subclasses.
One example of SAHNS targeted by this workshop are Incident Area
Networks (IANs), dedicated to single incidents or events. An IAN can
be pre-deployed for a planned event, such as a sporting or
"nationally significant" event, or can be dynamically deployed for
an unplanned incident, such as a local law enforcement situation or
a natural disaster. Another example are opportunistic resource
utilization networks (e.g., oppnets), in which the network reacts to
a lack of resources by finding and incorporating "helpers" that have
needed resources or services.
Areas and topics of particular interest include, but are not limited
to:
a) Design issues for SAHNS:
o Novel network and system architectures
o Economically-based models and solutions
o Operating systems and middleware
o Customized network protocols (incl. cross-layer protocols)
o Resource management solutions (incl. resource discovery)
o Algorithms and models for localization and mobility management
o Privacy, security, and trust
o Reliability and dependability
o Novel hardware platforms
b) Development issues for SAHNS:
o Development methodologies, models and tools
o Analytical and validation models
o Performance evaluation and modeling (incl. simulation tools)
c) Operation and management issues for SAHNS:
o Topology control and management
o Energy control and management
o Resource and service discovery and control
o QoS provisioning and management
o Data management, data aggregation, data dissemination, and
query processing
o Assuring survivability and reliability
o Controls for privacy, security, and trust management
d) Application issues for SAHNS:
o Best current and future applications for SAHNS
o Experience with SAHNS deployments and products
o Social and business impacts of SAHNS-based applications
2. PAPER SUBMISSION
Papers must be submitted in the PDF format, with numbered pages.
They should have no more than 6 pages following the IEEE Computer
Society proceedings format (8.5 by 11 inch sheets, double-column, 10
point or larger font, single-spaced).
The following information must be provided on the first page:
o Paper title
o Full names, affiliations and email addresses of all authors
o An abstract (up to 150 words)
o Five to ten keywords/phrases
o A footnote with the indication of the corresponding author,
plus the complete address, phone and fax numbers of the
corresponding author
Papers should be submitted by emailing them to:
llilien(a)cs.wmich.edu
Each received submission will be confirmed, usually within two
workdays.
3. PAPER REVIEW AND PUBLISHING
Each paper will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers and their
comments will be provided to the authors.
If accepted, the paper will be published in the workshop proceedings
by the IEEE Computer Society Press, provided that at least one of
its authors registers for ICDCS (which includes SAHNS) by the early
registration deadline.
As all conferences published by the IEEE Computer Society's
Conference Publishing Services (CPS), ICDCS proceedings will be
indexed through INSPEC, the leading English-language bibliographic
information service for scientific and technical literature. ICDCS
proceedings will also be submitted for indexing to EI's Engineering
Information Index, Compendex, ISI Thomson's Scientific and
Technical Proceedings, ISTP/ISI Proceedings, and Current Contents

Call for papers
S-CUBE 2009
The first international conference on Sensor Systems and Software
September 7-9, 2009 - Pisa, Italy
http://www.s-cubeconference.org/index.shtml
--------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------
S-CUBE - the First Conference on wireless Sensor network (WSN) Systems and
Software - provides an ideal venue to address the research challenges facing
system development and software support for wireless sensor networks based
systems that have the potential to impact society in many ways. Currently,
wireless sensor networks introduce innovative and interesting application
scenarios that may support a large amount of different applications
including environmental monitoring, disaster prevention, building
automation, object tracking, nuclear reactor control, fire detection,
agriculture, healthcare, and traffic monitoring.
The widespread acceptance of these new services can be improved by the
definition of frameworks and architectures that have the potential to
radically simplify software development for wireless sensor network based
applications. The aim of these new architectures is to support flexible,
scalable programming of applications based on adaptive middleware. As a
consequence, WSNs require novel programming paradigms and technologies.
Moreover the design of new complex systems, characterized by the interaction
of different and heterogeneous resources, will allow the development of
innovative applications that meet high performance goals. Hence, WSNs
require contributions from many fields such as embedded systems, distributed
systems, data management, system security and applications. The conference
places emphasis on layers well above the traditional MAC and routing, and
transport layer protocols.
The aim of the conference is to create a forum in which researchers from
academia and industry, practitioners, business leaders, intellectual
property experts and venture capitalists may work together in order to
compare and debate different innovative solutions.
The conference will feature a highly selective technical program consisting
of regular papers, short papers, and posters as well as specialized tracks
at the intersection of business and technology.

AIMS AND TOPICS
Network virtualization is the technology that allows the simultaneous
operation of multiple logical networks (also known as overlays) on a
single physical platform. Network virtualization permits distributed
participants to create almost instantly their own network with
application-specific naming, routing, and resource management mechanisms.
For instance, server virtualization enables users to use parts of a
computing center as their own personal computer. Recently, network
virtualization received tremendous attention since it is expected to be
one of the major paradigms for the future Internet as proposed by numerous
international initiatives on future networks, e.g. PlanetLab (USA,
International), GENI (USA), AKARI (JAPAN), OneLab2 (Europe), and G-Lab
(Germany).
A major objective of this ITC Specialist Seminar is to early identify
future performance issues and to provide methodologies and mechanisms to
address the various performance problems in network virtualization. The
seminar is intended as a forum for scientists and engineers in academia
and industry to exchange and discuss their latest experiences and research
results. It will address techniques, architectures, performance models,
and performance engineering methods leading to real world network
virtualization solutions that provide users with efficient techniques for
creating and operating their own high performance virtual network.
Topics of interest are amongst others, but not limited to:
o Performance issues of virtualization techniques on routers and end hosts
o Performance issues of bandwidth and resource virtualization techniques
o Performance issues of overlays for future network architectures

Betreff: [Tccc] Announcing the 2009 MANIAC Challenge
Datum: Fri, 7 Nov 2008 11:00:45 -0500
Von: Luiz DaSilva <ldasilva(a)vt.edu>
An: <tccc(a)lists.cs.columbia.edu>
Announcing the 2009 Mobile Ad-hoc Networking Interoperability And
Cooperation (MANIAC) Challenge
The MANIAC Challenge is an NSF-funded competition to better understand
cooperation and interoperability in ad hoc networks. The 2nd MANIAC
Challenge will be held on March 8-9, 2009, in conjunction with IEEE PerCom
in Galveston, Texas.
At the MANIAC Challenge, competing teams of students/researchers come
together to form a large ad hoc network. The organizers generate traffic
destined to each team. Each team can program its own cooperation strategy in
the network, dynamically making forwarding and routing decisions. Teams are
judged based on how much of the traffic destined to them makes it through
the network, how little energy they consume in forwarding traffic, and a
subjective evaluation of the quality of their strategy design. To get their
traffic across the network, each team must rely on other teams' willingness
to forward traffic for them.
To participate, the first step is to check out our website at
www.maniacchallenge.org <http://www.maniacchallenge.org/> . There you will
find the software you need to download, how to get technical support,
detailed description of the rules, photos from the 2007 MANIAC Challenge,
etc. Hardware requirements are simple: commodity laptops and IEEE 802.11
cards.
Feedback we received from student teams and faculty advisors who
participated in the 2007 MANIAC Challenge was overwhelmingly positive. For
the 2009 competition, we will again be offering some student travel grants
to cover some of the travel expenses.
We look forward to seeing you there! Please let us know of any suggestions,
questions or comments.
Best regards,
Luiz A. DaSilva and Allen B. MacKenzie

Call for Papers
The 2nd IEEE International Workshop on Opportunistic Networking (WON-09)
to be held in conjunction with The IEEE 23th International Conference
on Advanced Information Networking and Applications (AINA-09),
Bradford, UK, May 26-29, 2009
http://nrl.iis.sinica.edu.tw/WON09/
==================================================================
Aims and Scope
---------------
With the explosive deployment of mobile wireless devices recently,
Opportunistic Networking is becoming an increasingly popular area in
networking research, in which the assumption of having end-to-end
paths between the source and the destination is relaxed. Such networks
fall into the fields of mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET) and
delay-tolerant networking (DTN).Opportunistic Networks enable user
communication in an environment where disconnection and reconnection
are common and link performance is extremely dynamic. They are very
suitable to support the situation where network infrastructure has
limited coverage and users have "islands of connectivity". By taking
advantage of device mobility, information can be stored and forwarded
over a wireless link when connection 'opportunities' arise (e.g. an
appropriate network contact is met). In this view, traditional
Internet connectivity can be considered as a special case of
connection opportunity. With numerous emerging applications,
Opportunistic Networks allow a huge number of devices to communicate
end-to-end without requiring any pre-existing infrastructure and are
very suitable to support pervasive networking scenarios.
Topics of Interest
-----------------
Original papers addressing applications and architecture, systems
and protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related
to Opportunistic Networking are solicited. Papers that bring out
interesting and novel ideas at an early stage are favored over
highly-polish journal-style results. Topics of interest include, but
are not limited to:
* Advanced technologies for enabling opportunistic communication
* Architectures for opportunistic networks
* Applications for opportunistic networks
* Biological and social models for opportunistic communication
* Middleware services in opportunistic networks
* Dissemination and replication techniques for opportunistic networks
* Network and resource management techniques for opportunistic networks
* Trust and cooperation in opportunistic networks
* Security issues in opportunistic networks
* Transport and reliability issues in opportunistic networks
* Routing issues in opportunistic networks
* MAC layer issues and physical layer for opportunistic networks
* Simulation and modeling of Opportunistic networks
* Tools and techniques for designing, analyzing and building
opportunistic networks
* Opportunistic networks testbeds and measurements
Submissions and Proceedings
------------------------------
Authors are invited to submit an electronic version of original,
unpublished manuscripts via ISAS website
(http://nrl.iis.sinica.edu.tw/WON09/ISAS/).
The manuscript should be written in English and follow IEEE
two-column format with single-spaced, ten-point font in the
text. The maximum manuscript length is six (6) pages including
figures and references. All submitted papers will be refereed
by reviewers in terms of correctness, originality, technical
strength, significance and quality of presentation. The CD
