Call for Papers and Workshop Proposals
Pervasive 2009
The Seventh International Conference
on Pervasive Computing
Nara, Japan
May 11-14, 2009
http://www.pervasive2009.org/workshop.shtml
+-------------------------------------------------------------------+
Pervasive 2009, the Seventh International Conference on Pervasive
Computing, will be held May 11-14, 2009 in Nara, Japan. This annual
conference provides a premier forum for researchers to present their
latest results in all areas related to architecture, design,
implementation, application and evaluation of pervasive computing as
it becomes increasingly integrated into our lives.
---------------------------------
Call for Pervasive 2009 Workshops
---------------------------------
The Pervasive 2009 Workshop Co-Chairs and Organizing Committee invite
proposals for the workshop program of the 7th International Conference
on Pervasive Computing. Workshops provide a forum for discussing
areas of special interest within pervasive computing with like-minded
researchers and practitioners. Workshops afford participants the
opportunity to examine an area with a selected focus in an open
environment for the free exchange of perspectives. The day-long
workshops will be held prior to the main conference on Monday, May 11,
2009. For details of the main conference see:
http://www.pervasive2009.org/ .
Important Workshop Dates:
-------------------------
- October 24, 2008: Workshop proposals deadline (23:59 EST)
- November 17, 2008: Notification of acceptance/rejection of workshop
proposals
- November 24, 2008: Workshop calls posted online by the Co-Chairs
- February 10, 2009: Workshop position papers deadline
- March 1, 2009: Notification of acceptance/rejection of position papers
Workshop Organization:
----------------------
Pervasive workshops are dynamic and intimate forums in which to
explore and discuss topics in depth. We therefore encourage having an
international team of organizers for a workshop who are from different
institutions and represent a variety of perspectives. We aim for a
balanced workshop program offering a diverse set of themes. Because
of the unique opportunity for discussion this forum offers, we
encourage workshop plans that emphasize interactive components, group
activities, and discussion over those that focus on individual talks.
Organizers should be active themselves in the field in which they
propose a workshop. All listed organizers are expected to attend
those workshops they are organizing; i.e., do not include a potential
organizer who may not be present at the workshop. Any change to the
workshop organization team must be submitted in writing at least ten
days prior to the position paper deadline for individual workshops
(January 31, 2009). No changes to the workshop organization team can
be made after this date to ensure that potential participants
submitting position papers to workshops are aware of the final
organization team.
Please feel free to discuss ideas for a workshop proposal by email
with the workshop chairs prior to submission.
Proposal Submission Process:
----------------------------
Please email your proposal to the Workshop Co-Chairs, Yasuyuki Sumi
and Elaine M. Huang (pervasive09_workshops(a)ii.ist.i.kyoto-u.ac.jp).
Pre-Proposal Submission Inquiries:
Please feel free to contact the Workshop Co-Chairs, Yasuyuki Sumi and
Elaine M. Huang, if you would like to discuss a workshop proposal
(email: pervasive09_workshops(a)ii.ist.i.kyoto-u.ac.jp).
We solicit workshops in all areas related to Pervasive Computing. In

International Workshop on Collaboration and Cognition in Next Generation
Networks (CoNGN'2008)
www.criticalnet.org/congn2008
In conjunction with CollaborateCom'2008
Orlando, Florida, November, 2008
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The rapid developments in the Internet and emerging alternative network
protocol stacks promise unprecedented levels of sharing of information,
computing and communication resources through distributed collaborations of
diverse network elements. Collaborative networking comprises complex systems
with many tunable interdependent components, parameters and network
performance objectives. To realize their potential, collaborative networks
need to provide effective and efficient support for ubiquitous integration
of heterogeneous technologies such as mobile devices and infrastructures,
web services, grid computing systems, various operating environments, and
diverse COTS products. In addition, research is needed to provide network
cognition, which entails learning and reasoning by the diverse network
elements to dynamically select the ideal network operating state and adapt
to varying network and group contexts in order to optimize end-to-end
performance of the network as a whole. Moreover, networking aspects such as
autonomicity, security, trust, management, quality-of-service support and
localization need to be cognizant of group dynamics. Aparently, numerous
challenges face the realization of collaborative networking. These
challenges include balancing the competing goals of collaboration, autonomy
and security; allowing mobile users and groups to seamlessly communicate
throughout multiple heterogeneous networks and enjoy multiparty multimedia
applications while on the move between different administrative domains;
developing new APIs to enable applications to detect available access
networks and learn their characteristics, thus becoming aware of location,
context, and quality-of-service; and carefully optimizing network parameters
across the entire protocol stack. The key goal of this workshop is to foster
active interactions among diverse researchers and practitioners, and
generate added momentum towards research addressing collaborative and
cognitive networking aspects. Topics include, but are not limited to the
following:
Architectural principles for decentralized information, computing and
communication resource sharing
Moving networks and dynamic coalition environments
Collaboration-aware network management
Peer-to-peer collaborative networking
Bio-inspired collaborative networking
Cognitive and autonomic network protocols and services
Collaborative sensor-actuator networks
Policy-based management of collaborative networks
Coopererative, un-cooperative, and anti-cooperative behavior
characterization, identification, modeling, and impact analysis
Context modelling and management in collaborative networks
Network monitors, API and network discovery services
Security, trust, and privacy models, frameworks, architectures, and systems
for collaborative networks
Security, dependability, privacy, QoS, performance, and energy awareness
and trade-offs
Middleware for large-scale, distributed, multi-modal collaboration
Admission, delegation, accountability, and information flow control in
collaborative networks
Ubiquitous communication support for social networking
Web services and grid technologies for supporting multidomain collaborative
applications
Testbeds and experimental frameworks for collaboration and cognition in

The 6th IEEE International Conference on Autonomic Computing
Barcelona, Spain, June 15–19, 2009
http://icac2009.acis.ufl.edu/
Call for papers
SCOPE
To deal with the increasing complexity of large-scale computing systems,
computers and applications must learn to manage themselves in accordance
with high-level guidance from humans – a vision that has been referred to
as autonomic computing. Meeting the grand challenges of autonomic
computing
requires scientific and technological advances in a wide variety of fields,
as well as new software and system architectures that support the effective
integration of the constituent technologies. The purpose of the 6th
International Conference on Autonomic Computing and Communications
(ICAC-09)
is to bring together researchers and practitioners addressing all
aspects of
self-management in computing systems and applications. In doing so, we hope
to further build and nurture a community that can work together to realize
the vision of large-scale self-managing systems. The conference builds on
previous highly influential meetings in New York, Seattle, Dublin,
Jacksonville and Chicago.
Papers are solicited on a broad array of topics of relevance to autonomic
computing, particularly those that bear on connections and relationships
among different areas of research or report on prototype systems or
experiences. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Autonomic computing systems or prototype systems that exhibit
self-monitoring, self-configuration, self-optimization,
self-healing,
and/or self-protection.
* Fundamental science of self-managing systems: understanding,
controlling, or exploiting emergent behavior, fault-tolerance,
machine
learning, control theory, predictive methods and their use to
automate
manual operations and enforce behavior.
* Software engineering principles and architectures for self-managing
systems, based on interoperable Grid Services, agent-based systems,
Web Services, model-based systems or novel paradigms such as
biological,
economic or social.
* System-level technologies, middleware or services that entail
interactions among two or more components of self-managing
systems in
standalone, distributed, cluster, and Grid computing environments
(e.g.,
health monitoring, dependency analysis, problem localization or
remediation, workload management, and provisioning).
* Toolkits, environments, models, languages, runtime and compiler
technologies for building self-managing components, systems or
applications.
* Specific self-managing components, such as server, storage, network,
data center or specific application elements. Emphasis should be
placed
on techniques or lessons that may generalize to other components.
* Management topics, such as specification and modeling of
service-level
agreements, negotiation/conversation support, behavior enforcement,
etc., tie in with IT governance, and interaction with legacy systems.
* Interfaces to autonomic systems, including user interfaces,
interfaces
for monitoring and controlling behavior, techniques for defining,
distributing, and understanding policies.
* Experiences with autonomic system or component prototypes:
measurements,
evaluations, or analyses of system behavior, user studies,
experiences
with large-scale deployments of self-managing systems or
applications.
* Applications of autonomics to real and complex problems in science,
engineering, business and society.
PAPER/POSTER SUBMISSIONS AND PUBLICATION
Full papers (a maximum of 10 pages in length) and posters (2 pages) are
invited
on a wide variety of topics relating to autonomic computing as indicated
above.
All manuscripts will be reviewed and judged on merits including
correctness,
originality, technical strength, quality of presentation, and relevance
to the
conference themes. Submitted papers must include original work, and may
not be
under consideration for another conference or journal. They should also
not be
under review or be submitted to another forum during the ICAC-09 review
process.
Authors should submit full papers or posters electronically (PDF or
postscript)
via EDAS using the link on the ICAC-09 conference web site. Formatting
instructions will also be posted at the web site. Accepted papers and
posters
will appear in proceedings published by IEEE Computer Society (to be
confirmed), which will be distributed at the conference. Authors of
accepted
papers/poster are expected to present their work at the conference.
WORKSHOPS, DEMONSTRATIONS AND EXHIBITION
ICAC-09 welcomes proposals for co-located workshops on specific topics of
general interest to the autonomic computing community. Workshops are
expected
to publish proceedings, and should cover areas that may not be properly
addressed in the main scientific program. ICAC-09 will also feature a
demonstration and exhibition session consisting of prototypes and
technology
artifacts such as demonstrating autonomic software or autonomic computing
principles. Entries will be judged by a separate subcommittee led by the
demo/exhibit chair.
INDUSTRY SESSION
A singular value of ICAC is the confluence of top researchers and
practitioners
from both academia and industry. ICAC-09 will provide a readout of various
technologies currently in play from product perspectives. Among the
areas to be
addressed are core enablers for autonomic capabilities to be realized,
such as
frameworks, protocols and autonomic engines in production systems. The
industry
session also will address current areas of difficulty that present direct
opportunities for both academic and corporate research. Topics will be
relevant
to entrepreneurs, product developers, architects, managers, marketers
and end
users. Papers and posters reflecting such industry perspectives are
especially
encouraged and can be submitted as described above.
STUDENT AWARDS
A student best paper award will be presented, consisting of a commemorative
plaque, complimentary student registration to the conference and an
honorarium
that will partially cover travel & hotel costs. (A student paper is
defined as
one in which the principal (not sole) author is a student.) The student
will be
required to present the paper to receive the award.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Massively Multiuser Online Games (MMOG) are now widely used not only for
gaming, but
also for socializing, business and commerce, experimentation, and many
other practical
purposes. One could argue that MMOGs are the killer app that can bring
Virtual Reality
into the realm of eSociety, creating an environment with millions of
people taking part in
various activities and daily life, but electronically. This is evident
from the fact that real
companies are opening virtual branches in these online gaming
platforms, such as
clothing manufacturers, IBM, and CNN, to name a few companies present in
Second Life.
Virtual currencies such as Second Lifes Linden (or L$) are already
being exchanged for
real-world money, as are virtual items and virtual properties that are
sold for real
money. Massive numbers of users spend their time with their fellow
players at online
games like EverQuest, World of Warcraft, and Second Life. World of
Warcraft, for
example, has over ten million (10,000,000) users with a peak of over
500,000 players
interacting at a given time in the digital world. There is no doubt that
MMOGs have a
great potential to become the corner stone of an eSociety platform
bringing the
massiveness of the real society into the digital realm.
This special issue will cover enabling technologies and systems for
MMOGs, as well as
applications of MMOGs outside of gaming. The focus will be mostly on the
massive
aspect of games, but high-quality papers in real-time interactive
multiuser games (albeit
not massive) will also be considered if they address issues that can
benefit massive
games too. Hence, topics include, but are not limited to:
* Networking support for massive number of players
* Networked games (non-massive)
* P2P architectures for better scalability
* Zoning techniques, Area of Interest Management, and seamless
player movement
* Application-Layer Multicasting for massive user support
* Performance evaluation and traffic/player pattern measurements
* Audio/video conferencing in games
* Latency compensation techniques
* Content adaptation for players on heterogeneous receivers
* Cheating: detection, avoidance, and repair
* Multiuser mobile games
* Case studies about applications of gaming in other disciplines
such as business, pedagogy, biology, psychology, etc.
Only papers that have not been published and/or submitted elsewhere will
be considered.
Exception will be made for previously-published high-quality
conference/workshop
papers, as long as they have been substantially extended in terms of
technical content
and evaluation.
Papers should be no more than 20 pages, including figures and tables,
formatted
according to MTAP guidelines, please see:

Call for Papers
First International Workshop on Job and Service
Delegation in Complex Networks (JOSED'2009)
held in conjunction with
The First International Conference on Complex Sciences:
Theory and Applications (COMPLEX'2009)
February 26, 2009 - Shanghai, China
http://josed.org/
<http://josed.org/%C2%A0>
Theme
----------
Job and service delegation are well-known areas of interest in
organizational fields such as task scheduling and workflow management.
However, delegation models in these areas suffer from incomplete
understanding, because research in such fields has generally dealt with
relatively simple network settings. As we revisit Conway's Law, we find
evidence of important interplays between communication, organization and
product design structures. The possible combination of several networks into
a single complex network brings new cross-cutting concerns. Therefore,
research issues and solutions may be gathered and tried from diverse fields
such as ad hoc networks, workflow management, artificial intelligence,
collaborative software development, CSCW, etc. This workshop provides a
forum for exchanging problems, methods, models, and insights about
delegation in complex networks. It aims at bringing together researchers in
the areas of social networks, communication networks and product design in
search for common understanding of the subject of delegation in complex
networks.
Original papers addressing applications, scenarios, models, methods, and
architecture are solicited. Papers that bring out interesting and novel
ideas at an early stage are favored over highly-polish journal-style
results. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
-Scenarios and applications for labor markets, people migration,
collaborative software development, ad hoc networks, sensor networks, grid
computing (machine-performed), etc.
-Management of delegation in complex network systems
-Workflow management systems for complex networks
-Dependency structure matrix (DSM)
-Network organisations, organization of systems, Conway Law
-Delegation models based on incentives/financing (pay-for-performance and
cooperation)
-Characteristics of complex networks that affect job and service delegation
-Problems such as race-conditions, decision under uncertainty, resource
allocation
-Network clustering, peer-to-peer-approaches (p2p), self-organization
-Network metrics for delegation
-Delegation optimization
-Graph construction models (geometric random graph, unit disk, continuum
percolation, etc.)
-Information exchange approaches
-Computation for decision making (Peer-selection, Breakdown of Jobs and
Services)
-Decomposition and composition of services
-Network state fusion, data-fusion and data-aggregation
-Models and algorithms for fault-tolerant networks
-Ubiquitous communication support for delegate networking
-Services and algorithms that support delegating
-Searching and navigating in complex delegation networks
-Localized, distributed and centralized algorithm
-Topology control
-Distributed architectures for delegation (publish-subscribe, pipeline,
blackboard, representational state transfer, etc)
-Network clustering, peer-to-peer-approaches (p2p), self-organization
-Patterns of delegation
-Methods of artificial intelligent related to delegation networks
-Overlay networks
-Agent-based approaches for delegation
We encourage researchers from industry and academia to submit their original
contributions to JOSED'09.
Important Dates
-----------------------
Submission deadline: 22.11.2008
Acceptance notification: 16.12.2008
Camera-ready paper: 30.12.2008

CALL FOR PAPERS
IFIP/IEEE WONS 2009
The Sixth International Conference on Wireless
On-demand Network Systems and Services
(IEEE sponsorship pending)
February 2-4, 2009. Snowbird, Utah, USA
http://wons09.cs.ucla.edu
------------------------------------------------------------
Scope of the conference
-----------------------
As more and more users become increasingly dependent on
wireless and mobile communications, it is necessary to
secure a reliable and dependable technology support for
"on-demand" services through any of the wireless
architectures that have been in development recently, such
as mesh networks, WiMAX, WiFi, ad hoc networks, sensor
networks, etc.
However, there are serious challenges to overcome, such as
the integration of infrastructure-based and ad hoc networks,
robust algorithms for self-organizing, reconfigurable
wireless networks, on-demand service models and their
provision in a highly-volatile interconnection environment,
and smooth interoperability of architectures.
WONS, now in its sixth edition, has established itself as a
high-quality forum to address these challenges in the
context of a workshop that is rich in intense interactions
and based on innovative contributions by experts in the
field.
This announcement solicits original submissions of
high-quality research papers on "wireless on demand
networks" that provide novel insights on protocol and
network design, modeling and performance evaluation, pricing
and profitability models, QoS models, practical
implementations, service level aspects and Internet
integration of wireless networks.
Topics related to wireless ad hoc networks, mesh networks,
vehicular networks and sensor networks comprise, but are not
limited to:
* Architecture and Design
* Analysis through simulation and experimental evaluation
* Modeling
* Internet integration
* Social and economic aspects
* Pervasive / ubiquitous computing
* Localization and mobility management
* Security
* Energy-efficient protocols and power management
* Applications and Service Support
* Data dissemination and Peer-to-Peer systems
* Middleware aspects
* Self-X and network management
Manuscript submission
---------------------
Submitted papers should not have been published before or
they should not be currently under review at another
conference or journal. Authors are invited to submit
double-column full (8 pages) and short papers (4 pages) in
PDF format. The font size should not be smaller than 10pt.
Short papers should present future research directions,
ongoing work, visionary and innovative ideas; accepted short
papers will populate poster sessions at the conference and
will be included in the conference proceedings. Submission
implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to
register and present the paper if accepted. Conference
proceedings will be included in the IEEE Xplore library.
Further submission instructions will be published on the
conference web site.
