================================================================== Call for Papers The 3rd IEEE International Workshop on Opportunistic Networking (WON-10) to be held in conjunction with The IEEE 24th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications (AINA-10), Perth, Australia, April 20-23, 2010 http://nrl.iis.sinica.edu.tw/WON10/ ================================================================== Aims and Scope --------------- With the explosive deployment of mobile wireless devices recently, Opportunistic Networking is becoming an increasingly popular area in networking research, in which the assumption of having end-to-end paths between the source and the destination is relaxed. Such networks fall into the fields of mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET) and delay-tolerant networking (DTN).Opportunistic Networks enable user communication in an environment where disconnection and reconnection are common and link performance is extremely dynamic. They are very suitable to support the situation where network infrastructure has limited coverage and users have "islands of connectivity". By taking advantage of device mobility, information can be stored and forwarded over a wireless link when connection 'opportunities' arise (e.g. an appropriate network contact is met). In this view, traditional Internet connectivity can be considered as a special case of connection opportunity. With numerous emerging applications, Opportunistic Networks allow a huge number of devices to communicate end-to-end without requiring any pre-existing infrastructure and are very suitable to support pervasive networking scenarios. Topics of Interest ----------------- Original papers addressing applications and architecture, systems and protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related to Opportunistic Networking are solicited. Papers that bring out interesting and novel ideas at an early stage are favored over highly-polish journal-style results. Resource-Constrained Networks (RCNs) include a wide variety of networks in which resources - such as processing, communication, and energy - are limited. Examples of RCNs include ad hoc networks, sensor networks, mobile networks, and pervasive systems. In RCNs, the tradeoff between data quality and resource usage (especially energy) is a major concern. In this case, Localized Algorithms and Information Fusion are particularly interesting for RCNs, since the development of efficient practical solutions and algorithms is possibly the most challenging task for such networks. On one hand, Localized Algorithms are special distributed algorithms in which only a subset of nodes partakes in the network tasks, such as data acquisition, processing, and communication. On the other hand, Information Fusion is often used for improving the quality of data being transmitted in these networks. Thus, Localized Algorithms for Information Fusion must deal with the challenge of working with partial views, or incomplete data, to provide accurate results at reduced cost. This special issue will cover a broad range of aspects of Localized Algorithms for Information Fusion in RCNs, including ad hoc and mobile networks, wireless sensor networks, networked pervasive systems. We seek technical papers describing original (previously unpublished in any form or forum) ideas, groundbreaking results, and quantified system experiences. We especially encourage submissions that highlight practical deployments of RCNs, new application domains, and critical surveys of the state-of-the-art. Topics of interest for this special issue include, but are not limited to: - In-network query processing and data storage; - Localized signal processing; - Localized estimation, reasoning, and inference; - Localized information fusion for time synchronization; - Localized information fusion for location discovery and location-based services; - Localized information fusion for reliability and fault tolerance; - Localized information fusion for communication protocols at all layers (MAC, scheduling, routing, transport, and application); - Quality-aware resource management using localized information fusion; - Mobility control and coordination; - Optimization techniques for localized information fusion in homogeneous and heterogeneous RCNs; - Localized information fusion for data compression and distributed source coding. Following the continuous advances in wireless communications technologies, there is a growing interest in the design and development of BSNs systems for applications of improving people’s daily life, which leads to an increasing demand on interconnecting BSNs with other emerging wireless technologies, such as RFID technology, wireless sensor networks (WSNs), Zigbee, Bluetooth, WiBree, video surveillance system, WPAN, WLAN, internet, and cellular network. With BSNs being incorporated into these technologies, BSNs become ubiquitous. The marketing opportunities for advanced consumer electronics and services will be expanded extensively. More and more autonomous and intelligent applications which are close to human’s life will be generated. For example, by using body sensors to collect patient information, and by deploying diverse wireless networking systems for enhanced diagnosis assistance and action handling, better E-healthcare management system can be designed for providing more desirable services, which implies huge market yet to be discovered, due to an increasing demand of E-healthcare management system in recent years. In this special issue, we solicit research papers on body sensor hardware, system architectures, networking & communication protocols, applications, test-bed and prototype, biomedical sensor data processing and management. Especially, we are interested in the following communication issues: *Intra-BSN Communication: The terminology of “intra-BSN communication” defines the communication directly relates to the user with the radio coverage of about 2 meters, which consists of two categories: (1) the communication among the body sensors, which are deployed strategically on the human body or planted inside the body, as well as attached within in the human’s clothing; (2) the communication between the body sensors and the portable personal server, which typically can be a cell phone, PDA or headset. *Inter-BSN communication: The terminology of “inter-BSN communication” defines the communication between the personal server and one or multiple access points. The access point can be deployed as a part of infrastructure, or strategically placed in dynamic environment for handling emergency situation. The inter-BSN communication will interconnect BSNs with the wide range networks which are easy to be accessed in daily life. *Beyond-BSN communication: The beyond-BSN communication is used to interconnect BSN with outside world, which enhances the application and coverage range of body sensor system a step further through pervasive communication technology, such as internet and cellular networks. The objective of this special issue is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions, tutorials, and position papers that address these key aspects of Ubiquitous Body Sensor Networks. Original papers describing completed and unpublished work not currently under review by any other journal/magazine/conference/special issue are solicited. -------------------------------------------------------------- INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS Special Issue on 'Advances in Multimedia Communications' -------------------------------------------------------------- Submission deadline: 1 May 2010 OVERVIEW: Recent advances in communications technologies have witnessed a growing and evolving multimedia content delivery market based on information gathering, manipulation, and dissemination. It is a fact that personal communications, computing, broadcasting, entertainment, etc. have turned into streams of multimedia content, and the various communication and network technologies have become the means to carry that content to a wide variety of terminals. Unlike traditional communication systems, a fundamental challenge for present and future communication systems is the ability to transport multimedia content over a variety of networks energy-efficiently at different channel conditions and bandwidth capacities with various requirements of quality-of-service. There are many issues need to be addressed such as signal processing, collaborations, power management, flexible delivery, specialization of new content, dynamic access, telecommunications, networking, etc., due to the multi-disciplinary nature of the applications in advanced multimedia communications. The goal of this issue is to bring together the state of the art research contribution that describes original and unpublished work addressing the new emerging techniques on multimedia communications. Especially, we solicit research papers on addressing challenging issues existing for enabling mobile multimedia communications over heterogeneous infrastructure for realizing next generation networking and computing, e.g., 4 G all IP networks, ad hoc networks, wireless sensor networks, ubiquitous computing environments, cognitive radio networks, etc. For example, ubiquitous multimedia is a requirement in next generation networks, such as multimedia adaption in wireless network; multimedia services in ubiquitous circumstance; improving distributed multimedia communication through location awareness, action awareness, user awareness, etc. On the other hand, due to the limited computational power, memory and battery energy in wireless and portable terminals, power efficient design also plays important role in next generation mobile multimedia applications. While traditional INFOCOM submissions are expected to be papers describing in detail a complete piece of research with its final results, WiP papers are expected to report on early research results in particularly interesting and innovative research fields, preferably conducted in cooperation between industry and academia. The main objective of WiP papers is to stimulate interest in new, promising, possibly controversial research fields.
