To better understand the nature of these changes, it is important to evaluate these technologies in real-world environments via empirical measurement. While analytical and simulation-based approaches are useful, they are often limited by the simplistic modeling of the wireless protocols and the varying and error-prone wireless channel. As a response to these limitations, the need for experimental wireless network measurements has gained wide recognition in the networking research community. This workshop continues the successful WiNMee series, begun at WiOpt in 2005, and is intended to bring together researchers in the field of experimental wireless networking and serve as a forum for discussing advances and challenges in experimental wireless network measurements. We solicit 6-page papers that advance the understanding of wireless networks through testbed measurements or field experiments. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - operational experience of the performance of wireless networks - challenges with wireless measurements - experimental (in) validation of simulation or mobility models and assumptions in a wireless environment - metrics that would be required in a wireless network for performance evaluation or wireless network troubleshooting - experience from building/designing wireless networks - descriptions of tools for building and/or managing wireless testbeds (e.g. wireless link emulation) - large-scale or federated testbed measurements - techniques for improving the repeatability of tests, simplifying experiment setup and reconfiguration - techniques for validating the results obtained in the wireless testbed - techniques for measuring heterogenous wireless networks - techniques for collecting, archiving, anonymising and sharing wireless measurement data - new measurement hardware platforms, e.g., cognitive radio Important dates: Paper registration deadline: February 17th, 2010 Paper submission deadline: February 24th, 2010 Notification of acceptance: April 1st, 2010 Camera-ready papers due: April 23rd, 2010 Workshop date: May 31st, 2010 Keynote speakers To be announced shortly. This workshop seeks to bring together researchers and practitioners interested in the intersection of mobile computing and cloud computing. The scope of the MCS workshop will encompass system and networking topics such as mobile cloud computing platforms and services, mobile social networks, device virtualization, notification services, data mining services and location services. Mobile phone applications demand greater resources and improved interactivity for better user experience. Resources in cloud computing platforms such as Amazon EC2, Microsoft Azure, and Google AppEngine are a natural fit to remedy the lack of local resources in mobile devices. Mobile cloud computing refers to an infrastructure where data storage and data processing happen outside of the mobile device enabling a new class of applications previously not possible, e.g. context-aware mobile social networks. Mobile cloud computing is poised to become a disruptive force in the mobile world. While prior work on thin client related research is relevant, the availability of cloud computing resources on a pay-as-you-go basis, the paradigm shift introduced by social networks, the advances in virtualization, the emergence of LTE and WiMAX, IEEE 802.11n and 60 GHz, and mobile application programming platforms create a rich new set of research challenges and opportunities. We believe that large-scale datasets are important, not only in communication network design, but also for fundamental study in other academic disciplines, e.g., epidemiology, urban planning, and social science. Complex networks research has flourished since 1989 when the first large Internet (and later WWW) datasets became available. To achieve similar improvements in mobile networking and related fields, large-scale, and ideally planet-scale, datasets must be collected and made available. Following a successful introductory event at ACM MobiSys 2009, this year's workshop will challenge the community to collect large-scale human mobility traces. Our aim is to highlight the issues in collecting data on a planet-wide scale, so that the community can help develop mechanisms to collect, share and analyse such data. In this voluntary trial, the names of the submitting authors AND the names of the participating reviewers will be made available during the process. Special Issue of IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine In the last few years, a stimulating idea is fast emerging in the wireless scenario: the pervasive presence around us of a variety of "things" or "objects", such as devices, sensors, actuators, mobile phones, which, through unique addressing schemes, are able to interact with each other and cooperate with their neighboring "smart" components to reach common goals. This novel paradigm, named "The Internet of Things", continues on the path set by the concept of smart environment and paves the way to the deployment of numerous applications with a significant impact on many fields of future every-day life. In this context, logistics, Intelligent Transportation Systems, Business/Process management, assisted living, e-health are only a few examples of possible application fields in which this novel paradigm will play a leading role. How to implement this novel paradigm and how effective its introduction into citizens' every-day life is, still remains to be investigated. Key objectives of any R&D activity in the field are: efficient and effective wireless spectrum utilization, full interoperability of "smarts" devices, their adaptation and autonomous behavior, as well as trust, privacy, and security guarantees. From a wireless communications and networking perspective, the Internet of Things idea raises several challenging issues to address and technological nodes to untie. Which major technological innovations and developments are still required to enable a level of "ambient intelligence", characterized by the integration of wired and wireless "smart" components? Which sustainable standards, technologies, global communication protocols, and algorithms at the various layers of the system protocol stack (from the physical to the application layer) shall be introduced with the aim of allowing a vast amount of information to be shared amongst things and people when wireless links and technologies are involved? Which is the role of widely accepted wireless communications paradigms for peer to peer communications, machine-to-machine communications, and machine-to-network communications in a IoT perspective? Could the use of middleware mechanisms represent a feasible and effective solution to the problem of integrating Radio Frequency devices and wireless sensors into a common IoT framework? Are the proposed trust, privacy, and security models able to make people trust in these novel technologies instead of being afraid of an external surveillance and, more relevantly, are they still effective when involved "things" communicate wirelessly? An attempt to provide a partial answer to these and many other related questions will form the main scope of the present special issue. Now, that some of the fundamental issues and challenges have been clearly assessed, the focus is partially shifting to new issues, which include application scenarios (road safety, disaster recovery, sensors and actuators, etc.), autonomous organization and operation, optimization and control, and service creation and support. Moreover, new and exciting challenges are posed by closely related networks such as wireless mesh networks, sensor networks, and vehicular networks. Med-Hoc-Net is a major annual international workshop, aiming to serve as a platform for researchers and visionaries from academia, research labs, and industry. However, even more work on this area is needed to obtain significant results in improving the Quality of Life of patients and reducing medical errors and costs. First of all, a strict interaction and cooperation among medical specialists and ICT experts is necessary to define correct requirements fore-health systems. Then, in order to effectively design and deploy reliable E-health systems, a strong cooperation among several diverse research areas of ICT is necessary (i.e., bioengineering, wearable sensors, wireless communications, data fusion and processing, decision support systems and others). This is fundamental to make E-health systems a reality, satisfying main requirements of reliability and effectiveness both all the involved perspectives perspective. IREHSS aims to provide a forum for the interaction of experts belonging to these different research areas, from wearable computing and ubiquitous connectivity to context-awareness, sensor data fusion, artificial intelligence, expert systems, databases, security and privacy. The main objective is to provide a forum for the interaction of these multiple areas as an important chance to discuss and understand what aspects have to be considered to provide effective E-health systems.
