CALL FOR PAPERS
EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking
Special Issue on "Opportunistic and Delay Tolerant Networks"
http://www.hindawi.com/journals/wcn/si/odtn.html
===================================================================
Wireless and mobile computing advanced significantly in the last
decade. This opens new ways for mobile users to get connected to
each other. In particular, users have more and more the possibility
to spontaneously establish direct links between them without the
support of a preexisting infrastructure. Due to the natural
mobility of the users, it is likely that the resulting topology
be intermittently connected. This leads to two main issues. First,
nodes must find a way to benefit from contact opportunities
whenever possible. Second, given that inter-contact times are
unpredictable, applications must better \textit{tolerate delays.
In practice, opportunistic and delay-tolerant networks are much
closer to real situations than the legacy mobile ad hoc networks.
But this comes at the cost of more challenging problems, as
traditional communication architectures, commonly based on the
end-to-end principle, are not adapted to intermittently connected
scenarios. Although the research community has provided major
contributions in this area, there are still a lot of questions
that remain unanswered. These questions are both related to the
understanding of the fundamental aspects of such networks and how
to make them become a reality and coexist with other networks.
The goal of the proposed special issue is to help filling this
gap by presenting contributions ranging from theoretical
foundations to practical experiences in opportunistic and
delay-tolerant networks. As we intend to focus on both theoretical
and practical aspects of these networks, papers presenting
insights covering all levels of the communication architecture
will be welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited
to:
- Architectural principles of opportunistic and delay-tolerant
networks.
- Mathematical foundations of challenged networks.
- Participatory and opportunistic sensor networks.
- Tools and techniques for designing, analyzing, and building
opportunistic networks.
- Experimental deployments and measurement campaigns.
- Investigation of new interaction patterns among users.

= BACKGROUND =
It is widely argued that the increased requirements on ubiquitous
computing and network access led us to the era of smart devices and
wireless communications. The number of mobile phones, PDAs, NFC, RFID,
smart card tokens, and other computing and portable devices requiring
wireless network access has superseded that of wired ones.
Wireless communications and smart devices provide many benefits such as
mobility, portability and flexibility, increased productivity, and lower
installation and maintenance costs. At the same time futurists are
speculating about a world of ubiquitous computing and ambient
intelligent, in which countless invisible sensors and actuators will
communicate with each other, imminently taking care of our needs and wishes.
Depending on their specific underlying operational characteristics and
deployment environment, these devices have specific platform,
application, and communication requirements, and they may be routinely
used by millions of users and for a variety of applications. These
applications include a myriad of deployment scenarios including WLAN
accessibility in order to check email and obtain access to the internet
or other networks, buildings and public transport networks, or even
engaging into financial transactions with banks or other individuals. As
the technologies of next generation wireless networks and smart devices
are emerging, security has become a primary concern, in order to ensure
dependable, secure communications and services to the end user.
This special issue on security of next generation smart devices will
present current research focusing on security-related protocols and
applications, secure architecture and frameworks, along with new
theories and methodologies for secure next generation wireless networks
and respective smart devices. We will welcome contributions from the
academic, industrial, research, and development communities that can
demonstrate particular advances into the aforementioned proposals and
technologies.

MobiCom 2010
The 16th Annual International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking
Planned for September 2010, Chicago, IL, USA

*_Papers_*
Authors are invited to submit full papers presenting new research
related to the theory and/or practice of mobile computing and/or
wireless and mobile networking at the link layer and above. All
submissions must describe original research, not published or currently
under review for another conference or journal. Areas of interest
include, but are not limited to:
* Architectures, protocols, and algorithms for various wireless and
mobile networks, such as wireless LANs, wireless mesh networks,
cellular data networks, delay-tolerant networks, mobile ad hoc
networks, sensor networks, personal area networks, and vehicular
networks
* Design, implementation, and evaluation of wireless systems and
mobile applications
* Algorithms and models for wireless networks and mobile applications
* Fundamental understanding of mobile computing and wireless networking
* Measurements and performance evaluation of mobile and wireless
networks
* Cross-layer design for mobile and wireless networks ranging from
the PHY layer to applications
* Networks involving novel technologies such as UWB, MIMO,
directional antennas, and software radios
* Architectures, algorithms and protocols for dynamic spectrum
usage, white spaces, and cognitive networks
* Techniques that deal with low power and energy limitations
* Operating system and middleware support for mobile computing and
networking
* Security, privacy, and trustworthiness of mobile and wireless systems
* Integration and interworking of wired and wireless networks
* Emerging topics, e.g., social networking applications enabled by
mobile and wireless networking systems
MobiCom 2010 will be a diverse conference and we strongly encourage the
submission of mobile systems, experimental and theoretical papers. The
program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are
appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental
paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in
the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation,
whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on
innovation within the algorithm design. At the same time, the evaluation
of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of
the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance.
For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the
evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and
weaknesses.
The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will
be published in the conference proceedings.
*_Challenges Papers_*
The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the
field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present
revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent
among the research community. These "challenges papers" should provide
stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and/or
influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products
or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in
this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is
not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is
expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiCom program
committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM
MobiCom proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission
procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must
start with the word "Challenges:" i.e., "Challenges: Rest of the Title."
*_Submission Instructions_*
All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should
prepare a PDF or PostScript version of their full paper. Papers must:
1. be no longer than 12 pages (8 pages for "Challenges" papers),
2. be in font size no smaller than 10 points,
3. have pages in double column format with each column having
dimensions 9.25 in X 3.33 in, a space of 0.33 in between the two
columns, and with no more than 55 lines of text per column, and,
4. fit properly on US "Letter"-sized paper (8.5 in X 11 in).
*Detailed instructions on how and where to submit your paper can be
found here <http://www.sigmobile.org/mobicom/2010/submit.html>.*
This year, authors will be given the option of submitting a few slides
that summarize their paper and its contributions. The slides will not be
revealed to the reviewers until just before the TPC meeting. They will
be used only to better facilitate discussions during the TPC meeting.
More details will be made available soon.
All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through
double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld
from the reviewers. Authors' names must not appear in the paper or in
the PostScript or PDF file. Submitted papers must be original work, and
a paper with substantial similarity must neither be already published,
nor be currently under review for publication in any other venue. Please
direct any questions about the paper submission process to the Program
Co-Chairs at **mobicom_pcchairs*****acm.org***.
*_Best Paper Award_*
All papers will be considered for the Best Paper Award. The program
committee will select a number of candidates for the award among
accepted papers. The winner will be selected at the conference,
considering both the paper and the presentation. The winner will receive
a plaque and a cash award.
*_Important Dates_____*
Abstracts submission due:
March 5, 2010 (11:59 PM PST)
Paper submissions due:
March 12, 2010 (11:59 PM PST)
Notification of acceptance:
June 21, 2010

*_Important Note_*
It is ACM policy (http://www.acm.org/pubs/rights.html)
<http://www.acm.org/pubs/rights.html> not to allow double submissions,
where the same paper is submitted to more than one conference/journal
concurrently. Any double submissions detected will be immediately
rejected from all conferences/journals involved.
