Special Issue of Ad Hoc Networks on Recent Advances in Vehicular
Communications and Networking

Vehicular communication for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) plays
an increasingly important role in people’s lives since it provides safety as
well as comfort for passengers and enables more efficient travel by
providing timely information to operators of vehicles and concerned
authorities. As a result, there will be a strong demand for wireless
communications and networking to provide information as well as onboard
entertainment services to passengers and driver. Vehicular communication is
expected to implement a variety of wired and wireless technologies for
Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Roadside (V2R) communications. In
Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) for V2V systems, communication may
experience serious deterioration due to the lack of accurate channel state
information and advanced radio-resource-allocation schemes to assign
wireless resources to high-speed vehicles. Moreover, communication among
high-speed vehicles through cellular communication networks causes frequent
handovers and drop-offs resulting in degradation in overall system
performance. This motivates researchers to design innovative resource
allocation techniques and robust, as well as, fast handover schemes for
dynamically changing topologies of VANETs. In VANETs for V2V communications,
trust, security, privacy, and reliable routing are major concerns since the
network topology changes constantly. Furthermore, physical layer design
issues for wireless communications in high-speed mobile environments are
also of vital importance to realize its full potential for ITS. All in all,
vehicular communications with dynamically changing topologies is a demanding
research topic. The goal of this issue is to bring together the state of the
art research contributions that focus on vehicular communications and
networking.
In particular, the topics of interest include but are not limited to
· Physical Layer and Propagation Models.
· Radio Resource and Interference Management.
· Medium Access Control and Routing Protocols.
· Information Aggregation and Dissemination.
· Positioning and Location Technologies.
· Sensor Technologies for VANETs.
· Drive-Through Internet and Roadside Infrastructures.
· Incident Detection for VANETs.
· Trust, Security, and Privacy Issues.
· Fast and Reliable Handover and Mobility Management
· Vehicle Traffic Models.
· Heterogeneous Networking.
· Cellular and Satellite Communications for Vehicular Networking.

Call for Papers
The Third IEEE International Workshop on Vehicular Networking (VON-12)
http://lens.csie.ncku.edu.tw/VON12/index.html
to be held in conjunction with the AINA 2012 Conference
that will be held in Fukuoka, Japan, March 26-29, 2012.
==================================================================
Aims and Scope
---------------
The goal of this workshop is to present and discuss recent advances in
the development of wireless vehicular networking technologies. Based on
short- to medium-range communication systems (vehicle-to-vehicle and
vehicle-to-roadside), vehicular networks will enable vehicular safety
applications including collision and other safety warnings as well as
non-safety applications like real-time traffic congestion and routing
information, high-speed tolling, mobile infotainment, and many others.
The creation of high-performance, highly reliable, highly scalable,
and secure vehicular networks technologies, though, presents an
extraordinary challenge to the wireless research community: a high
degree of communication reliability is needed under unfavorable channel
conditions. Clearly, the specificity of vehicular networks in terms
of mobility behavior and applications scenarios and requirements makes
vehicular networks research an exciting and demanding application-
and purpose-driven sub-discipline of wireless networking.
Topics of Interest
-----------------
Original papers addressing applications and architecture, systems
and protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related
to Vehicular Networking are solicited. Papers that bring out interesting
and novel ideas at an early stage are favored over highly-polish
journal-style results. Topics of interest include, but are not limited
to:
- Vehicular mobile ad-hoc networks
- Routing protocols for V2V communications
- MAC layer technologies
- Physical layer and RF level technologies
- Antenna technologies
- Role of V2V communications in Intelligent Transportation Systems
- Safety and non-safety applications
- High-speed mobility management
- Radio resource management and QoS support
- Roadside-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-vehicle communication
- Algorithms, protocols and systems for data dissemination
- Channel modeling
- Modulation and coding
- Power control and scalability issues
- Multi-channel organization and operation
- Security issues and countermeasures
- Privacy issues
- Network management
- Simulation frameworks & real-world testbeds

------------------------------
Authors are invited to submit an electronic version of original,
unpublished manuscripts via:
http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=von12
The manuscript should be written in English and follow IEEE two-column
format with single-spaced, ten-point font in the text. The maximum
manuscript length is six (6) pages including figures and references.
All submitted papers will be refereed by reviewers in terms of
correctness, originality, technical strength, significance and quality
of presentation. The CD proceedings will be published by IEEE Computer
Society Press and available online through IEEE Xplore.
The enhanced version of the best-quality selected papers that have been

SCOPE
In the today's provision of network services, a rapid development of
many new technologies (like virtualization or cloud computing) and
applications (e.g., social networking) can be seen. They have a
considerable engineering, commercial and societal impact and pose
numerous challenges to designers. One class of issues is the continuous
offering of services in spite of various types of failures that are
everyday events in networks. The increasing complexity, the
participation of many different autonomous entities in the service
provision, the lack of information, coordinated actions as well as
governance makes this challenge increasingly difficult. In addition to a
design of reliable network segments, server clusters etc., new
technological issues like stability and failure management across
heterogeneous autonomous systems arise. They also involve novel fields
at the border of technology, business and society, like risk-awareness
or influence of public policy.
The goal of this issue is to present state of the art research
contributions that focus on the reliable network-based services (RNS)
provisioning. Contributions are invited from prospective authors with
interests in the indicated special issue topics and related areas of
application. All contributions should be of high quality, original,
unpublished, and not submitted for publication elsewhere. Topics of
interest include, but are not limited to:
- Network and service resilience:
+ reliability requirements and metrics for individual users, business,
and the society
+ service differentiation based on recovery methods
+ dependability of networked applications and network-based services
+ application and service-specific survivability techniques
- Commercial and societal context:
+ telecommunication networks as an element of critical national
infrastructures
+ network resilience combined with economics and business issues
+ risk and reliability in the Internet and enterprise networks
- Operational aspects:
+ resilience of multi-domain connections in the Internet
+ reliability of emerging technologies (e.g., network virtualization,
thin client architectures)
+ network dependability in cloud computing
+ interaction between fault management and traffic handling
- Theory and modeling
+ reliability analysis
+ methods and theory for survivable networks and systems
+ simulation techniques for network and service resilience

The 13th ACM International Symposium on Mobile Ad Hoc Networking and
Computing
(June 11 - 14, 2012 Hilton Head Island, SC)
ACM MobiHoc is a premier international symposium dedicated to addressing
challenges emerging from wireless ad hoc networking and computing. With
its highly selective technical program, the symposium will bring
together researchers and practitioners from a broad spectrum of wireless
networking research to present the most up-to-date results and
achievements in the field.
We invite paper submissions on mobile ad hoc networks, wireless sensor
networks, wireless mesh networks, vehicular networks and ad hoc
computing systems, with the focus being on issues at and above the MAC
layer. Published papers will present original and novel research
addressing theoretical challenges and/or practical issues in the
wireless network design.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
*Applications and middleware support
*Transport, network, and MAC protocols
*Energy efficiency
*Location discovery
*Cross-layer design and control
*Network resilience, fault-tolerance, and reliability
*Functional computation and data aggregation
*Modeling and performance analysis
*Scaling laws and fundamental limits
*Network coding
*Opportunistic and delay-tolerant networks
*Vehicular networks
*Cognitive radio networks
*Distributed sensing, actuation, control, and coordination
*Trust, security and privacy
*System design and testbeds
*Measurements from experimental systems
The symposium specially encourages the submission of exploratory studies
that identify new challenges in the network design, innovative services,
and applications that may stimulate far-reaching future research.
This year's symposium will assign a Best Paper Award among all the
papers submitted to the conference.
Paper Submission Guidelines: Papers must report new results
substantiated by experimentation, simulation, or analysis. All
submissions will be handled electronically and must be in PDF format.
Paper submissions for regular papers must be limited to 10 pages (US
letter size, 8.5 x 11 inches) including text, figures and references.
The font size must be at least 10 points. Margin must be 1 inch on all
sides. Accepted papers will be published in the symposium proceedings.
All submitted papers would be judged based on their quality through
double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld
from the reviewers. Therefore, authors' names must NOT appear in the
paper or in the PDF file. Submitted papers must not be currently under
review for any other publication. Before submitting your paper, please
check the description of the conference scope.
Instructions on paper submission are available on the symposium webpage
(http://www.sigmobile.org/mobihoc/2012).

> Modern vehicles are being increasingly equipped with electronic systems
> and computers. These parts are used to control and organize critical
> vehicular systems, e.g. the engine control. In addition, the same
> systems are used to control entertainment systems and to offer
> navigation aids for the driver. Therefore it appears that IT is an
> integral part for the concept and the development of future vehicles.
> But one of the biggest problems in integrating computer systems in cars
> is given by the typical lifespan of both.
>
> While vehicles are used for a period of 10 to 15 years, the typical IT
> Systems’ lifespan is only just a few years. But new and innovative
> services can only be used with modern equipment, which facilitates the
> use of fast processing power and a huge range of sensors. For that
> reason, a separation of both computer systems and vehicles is unavoidable.
>
> This separation can be achieved by the use of mobile devices like
> smartphones and tablets. Today, smartphones are powerful computers with
> constantly increasing processing power. The typical lifespan of a
> smartphone is small, making it the perfect solution for services which
> require modern computer systems. Furthermore, smartphones and tablets
> are equipped with the latest sensors which can be used to develop and
> offer new services to the driver and any other car passenger.
>
> New kinds of services can be explored using both mobile device sensors
> and car sensors. Another interesting
> research topic is controlling cars by replacing user interfaces with a
> mobile device. This workshop intends to
> bring together researchers, professionals and practitioners to discuss
> and address recent developments
> and challenges in realizing the communication between mobile devices and
> cars and using this combination for new kinds of services.
>
> Specifically, we solicit original research contributions in the
> following areas:
>
> * Communication between mobile devices and cars
> * Sensor-networks in vehicles
> * App concepts and technologies for different mobile platforms
> * Controlling vehicle systems with mobile devices
> * Innovative services and applications for mobile devices in cars
> * Platforms and frameworks for mobile devices
> * Location- and track-based services in cars
> * Mobile marketing and location-based Advertising in cars
> * Seamless communication
>

>
> All submissions will be handled via EDAS. Accepted papers will be
