Call for Papers
FutureNet V
Fifth International Workshop on the Network of the Future
IEEE ICC 2012 Workshop
Ottawa Convention Centre, Ottawa, Canada, June 2012
http://www.futureinter.net/
o Important Dates
* Submission deadline: 30 November, 2011
* Acceptance notification: 15 January, 2012
* Final manuscript due: February, 2012 (TBA)
* Workshop date: 11 June or 15 June, 2012
o Objectives
Today's Internet architecture is stifling innovation; restricting it
mostly to the application layer. From a number of angles it appears
that we have reached a point in the impressive development cycle of
the Internet that now requires some major change. In the past few
years, there has been a renewed worldwide interest in future
Internet architectures, leading to early-stage research programs
such as NSF FIND/FIA/GENI in the US, FP7 Network of the Future/FIRE
in Europe and NWGN in Japan. The objective of these R&D programs
is to evolve or re-architect the Internet protocol to improve
security and usability, incorporate new optical and wireless
technologies and better serve the next generation of content, mobile
and pervasive network services. The International Workshop on the
Network of the Future (FutureNet) is a platform for both
evolutionary and clean-slate approaches for redesign of the
Internet. The event will uniquely bring together approaches driven
by mobile and wireless requirements, network virtualization, network
self-management, content and sensor networking and discuss these
from both a technical as well as socio-economic perspective.
o Topics of Interest
We solicit contributions that report early results addressing
research challenges on topics related to the network of the future.
Particularly, we want to identify and address issues with a very
high potential for significant impacts on the way the network is
functioning and being used. The workshop welcomes submissions from
both researchers and practitioners but fresh ideas in the form of
early results. Position papers and systems papers are particularly
welcome.
o Areas of interest include but are not limited to:
* Re-design and re-evaluation of today?s architectural principles
* End-to-end virtualization of the network
* Programmable network equipment such as routers
* New mobile networking technologies
* Alternatives to established technologies such as routing
* New optical layer networking technologies
* Self-management of networks
* New media-aware transport services
* New approaches to network security and user privacy
* Mechanisms to interconnect extremely heterogeneous edge networks
* Technology based on new communication paradigms
* Enabling technologies for the Internets of Things
* Machine-to-machine networking
* Publish/subscribe network architectures
* Policy and social issues in future architectures
o Paper Submission Guidelines

Call for Papers
Special Issue on "Machine and Robotic Networking"
IEEE Network Magazine
===============================================
The advances in communication networking technologies have been very
successful in academia, industry and consumer markets. “Being connected”
becomes an essential part of our daily life. Recently, we have been also
observing that the communication distance between transmitters and
receivers shrinks in many commercial applications. This includes
sensor/RFID networks, WiFi and near field communication (NFC) devices.
Such shortened distance is mostly caused by the high volume of data
demand of users. One other reason is that the modern communications is
not any more for human-to-human (H2H) information exchange only but also
for machine-to-machine (M2M) or machine-to-human (M2H). The
inter-machine distance will be gradually decreasing in many upcoming
applications. This trend adds complexity to the communication protocols
with very high node density and unpredictable interference in particular
in wireless networks.
The machine in M2M or M2H refers to various devices from remote metering
modules to vehicles or small networked robots with communication
functions embedded. M2M applications and use cases currently under
consideration by ETSI, 3GPP, 3GPP2 and IEEE are mainly focused on
stationary nodes (machines) or at least control of node mobility is out
of scope of M2M applications. However, the controllable node mobility
willconstitute a core part of M2M communications. Robotic networks will
belong to this class of M2M, where the position of nodes can be changed
to meet the needs of M2M applications.
Independently, in the automatic control and robotics community, there
has been special interest in connecting multiple robots for effectively
achieving the common mission of a group of autonomous robots. This area
is known as networked robotics. The main background of this approach is
that connecting robots with less intelligence would be more beneficial
than a single isolated robot with full intelligence. In particular,
there have been a group of researchers focusing on the behaviours of
small animals to mimic their grouping patterns such as group navigation
and communications.
This special issue is dedicated to fundamentals and applications in the
machine and robotic networks. The main emphasis is to introduce and to
open new research horizon to the networking researchers. Those who are
currently investigating protocols for inter-machine data exchange or
designing a group of networked machines (including robots) are potential
authors for this special issue. The comprehensive survey and forecasting
of this inter-disciplinary area with deep insight on research challenges
and business opportunities are also seriously considered.
The special issue encourages authors to submit their papers on the
specific areas, which are not strictly limited to the followings, though:
·Networking protocol design for machine and robotic networks
·Distributed algorithm design for machine and robotic networks
·Resource management for machine and robotic networks
·Networked robots with special emphasis on networking and distributed
computing
·Capacity issues in machine and robotic networks
·Mobility issues in machine and robotic networks
·Cognitive machine and robotic networks
·Bio-inspired networking in robotics
·Design and application issues in M2M and networked robots
·Business models and use cases for M2M and networked robots
The interested authors are expected to submit their papers confirming to
the guidelines of IEEE Network Magazine,
http://dl.comsoc.org/livepubs/ni/info/authors.html according to the
following schedule:
Paper submission will be handled electronically through EDAS
(http://edas.info/newPaper.php?c=10905).
·Paper submissions: October 15, 2011
·Notifications to authors: January 15, 2012
·Final manuscripts: March 1, 2012
·Publication of special issue: May 2012

Subject: ACM TiiS special issue on Interaction with Smart Objects
Call for Papers
Special Issue of the
ACM Transactions on Interactive Intelligent Systems
on INTERACTION WITH SMART OBJECTS
Main submission deadline: November 30th, 2011
http://tiis.acm.org/special-issues.html
AIMS AND SCOPE
"Smart objects" refers to the rapidly growing trend of
introducing computing capabilities into everyday objects and
places. Well-known examples range from smart kitchen appliances
and objects (smart coffee machines, smart knives and cutting
boards, ...) to smart meeting rooms and even city-wide
infrastructures. Smart objects are mostly fully functional on
their own, but value is added by capabilities for communication
and distributed reasoning.
While a lot of research has focused on the many technical
challenges involved in implementing smart objects, far less
research has been conducted on the question of how interaction of
users with these objects can be improved, either by leveraging
the intelligence in the objects or by other means. Smart objects
raise unique challenges and opportunities for designing
interaction with intelligent systems: coping with the mostly
limited interaction capabilities, exploiting context information
to provide more natural interaction, helping the user to
understand the behavior and capabilities of the objects ....
This special issue will publish papers that address these issues
from a variety of perspectives. The dimensions listed below
indicate the range of work that is relevant to the special
issue. In case of doubt about the relevance of your topic, please

Elsevier - Pervasive and Mobile Computing
Special Issue on Pervasive Urban Applications
==================================================================
Over the past decade, the development of digital networks and
operations has produced an unprecedented wealth of information.
Handheld electronics, location devices, telecommunications networks,
and a wide assortment of tags and sensors are constantly producing a
rich stream of data reflecting various aspects of urban life. For
urban planners and designers, these accumulations of digital traces
are valuable sources of data in capturing the pulse of the city in an
astonishing degree of temporal and spatial detail. Yet this condition
of the hybrid city - which operates simultaneously in the digital and
physical realms - also poses difficult questions about privacy, scale,
and design, among many others. These questions must be addressed as we
move toward achieving an augmented, fine-grained understanding of how
the city functions - socially, economically and yes, even
psychologically.
This special issue aims to advance understanding of research
challenges and opportunities in applying the pervasive computing
paradigm to urban spaces. We are seeking multi-disciplinary
contributions that reveal interesting aspects about urban life and
exploit the digital traces to create novel urban applications that
benefit citizens, urban planners, and policy makers.
In this special issue, we are seeking high quality papers reporting
original research results on Pervasive Urban Applications with a
preference for works including evaluation studies based on empirical
data of actual urban environments. Relevant topics include (but are
not limited to):
- Pervasive computing applications for urban planning and design
- Mining of data collected from urban networks e.g. transportation,
energy
- Urban mobility and geo-localization
- Multi-source urban information integration
- Real-time urban information processing
- Knowledge representation and reasoning on city data
- Case studies and applications of mixed urban sensing and mining
- Analysis of social networks in urban space
- Middleware for mobile urban computing
- Context-aware systems for urban space
- Pervasive urban applications for smart cities
- Intelligent urban transportation systems
- Empirical evaluation of pervasive urban applications
- Wireless sensor networks, and social network sensing for pervasive
urban applications
- Security, privacy, reputation, and trust issues in urban computing
- Impact of pervasive technologies in urban space e.g. social,
economical, and psychological.
Submission process:
All submissions must be prepared according to the Guide for Authors as
published in the Journal website at http://www.ees.elsevier.com/pmc/.

not have been previously published or be under consideration for
publication elsewhere. A submission based on one or more papers that
appeared elsewhere must have major value-added extensions over what
appeared previously (at least 33% new material). Authors are requested
to submit their relevant, previously published articles and a summary
document explaining the enhancements made in the journal version.
Important Dates:
Paper submission deadline: November 15, 2011

CALL FOR PAPERS
The key components of many pervasive systems and applications are already
deployed in the form of ubiquitous commercial products carried by humans.
Human mobility makes it possible for such key components to interact,
promoting cooperation and sharing of content, services and resources.
Smartphones, tablet PCs, and other personal devices act as mobile computing
elements able to gather information about the surrounding environment
according to the mobility of users. In other situations these devices
operate as mobile nodes of the computing and/or networking infrastructure,
where interaction and communication occur opportunistically.
The goal of PerMoby is to explore the impact of human mobility on the
achievement of the pervasive computing vision. The focus is on pervasive
applications, systems, and protocols where mobility plays an active role
in achieving the end goals.
Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of
human-centric applications and systems are solicited. Papers describing
prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems
are particularly welcome. The submission of papers on controversial issues
is also encouraged. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- pervasive systems and applications based on (or influenced by) human
mobility
- mobile phone sensing applications and systems
- opportunistic and participatory sensing, and anything in between
- opportunistic computing
- pervasive systems with humans in the loop
- wearable sensing systems
- mobility models
- distributed computing approaches that rely on human mobility
- impact of human mobility on wireless communication
- green pervasive applications that leverage human mobility
- mobility aware protocols
- opportunistic networking
PAPER SUBMISSION
Papers should contain original material and should not be previously
published or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts
are limited to a maximum of 6 pages in IEEE conference format. Accepted
papers will be published by IEEE Computer Society Press in the combined
PerCom 2012 Workshops Proceedings and will appear on IEEE Xplore. At least
one author of each accepted paper must register and attend the workshop
to present the paper. There is no workshop-only registration. An oral
presentation at the workshop is strictly required. Failure to present the
paper at the workshop will result in the withdrawal of the paper from
the proceedings as well as from IEEE Xplore. Paper submission will be
via EDAS (further details will be available on the workshop website).
